| Saints charged with spying 09:48 - May 9 with 115629 views | KensalT | Southampton haven't yet denied these allegations! For anyone who doesn't know Boro caught someone with some very sophisticated cameras and recording equipment spying on one of their training sessions. Apparently Boro are looking into the possibility that Saints have done this to other teams this season. Nightmare timing for the EFL. I can't see any way for them to fudge this | | | | |

| Saints charged with spying on 07:09 - May 21 by GaryBannister86 | If nothing else, you still can't beat the Championship for intrigue and drama. I'm still waiting for Gary Weaver's take on it? "They came to SPY, to storm the Boro CITADEL, but they said NOT ON MY TURF and they caught him RED HANDED and PLANTED THEIR FLAG in the BORO SOIL" On a serious note, interesting to see what Soton do next. They absolutely have to sack everyone involved, except I hope for the poor intern that was ordered to do the spying. With all the chat of litigation, if there is one person who should be suing, it's him. What a position to be put in. I know he could have said no, but you are in the dream job (presumably) as a junior...what are you going to do? Be a whistleblower?! |
At the very least surely the manager has to go. Obviously Will Still was a bit of a disaster, but with the players they have they really should be winning most of their games and challenging for promotion. I mean in the 5-0 against us they had Ross Stewart and Cameron Archer on the bench FFS! Was the spying really necessary? Odd.

| Saints charged with spying on 08:57 - May 21 by Ned_Kennedys | Of course the lad who did the actual spying needs sacking: he’s an adult not a little kid only following orders. And Ryan Manning and his agent will have worked out there is a nice little triple earn to be had from this: sue Southampton for loss of possible earnings/emotional distress, demand his contract is fully paid up, and join a newly relegated club with a large signing on fee. Win win win. |
I read somewhere that this intern is 27. Definitely old enough to know what he was doing.

I thought that the three points was for the match itself and was awarded to Blackburn by default. Therefore playing the game and losing wouldn’t have made any difference.

Back in the 90s they would probably have been done for that. Integrity of the game, don't you know. I think Arsene Wenger was the first to regularly play the kids in cup competitions but I don't think too many other clubs were doing that thirty years ago. Apart from Fergie and his Class of 92.

Docked three points, went down by two. Finished three points behind Blackburn and drew the game when it was eventually played. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

issue for him was he was told to do by the club yes hes to blame no doubt but he was told to do it by who ever in charge , hes already pretty much ruined his career by following orders and u have to feel sorry for him as u can be sure some idiot will make an example of him one day and hell end up gettinfg a slp or two from some idiot

From memory, Brian Robson asked the Middlesbrough chairman what was the likely outcome if they refused to play the match & was told that it would only be a fine. I'm fairly sure this came to light on one of Sky's documentaries. Whether it was about Robson or 'boro I can't remember.

| Saints charged with spying on 22:36 - May 20 by QPR_Jim | Thing is, Southampton either cheated and deserved to be thrown out, in which case the team they cheated shouldn't be punished for losing to a team that's cheating. Or it wasn't cheating and they should play in the final, but the EFL have decided it was, so why punish Middlesbrough for losing to a team that cheated. |
The EFL set the precedent earlier this season when they removed Swindon from the EFL Trophy after they had won their semi final for cheating & reinstated Luton. It has been common practice for decades for the FA to chuck clubs out of their competitions for playing ineligible players, so removal was basically cast in stone. Provided you accept that the play offs are a different competition to the regular league season!

I read the other day that the FA isn't responsible for EFL clubs discipline but it is for behaviour of individuals. WTF is that all about? Anyway, it seems that it will be the FA that decides what punishment individuals at Southampton get. I don't think we'll be seeing Tonda Eckert again anytime soon.

Apparently Ian Wright was a bastard for that as well. My friend played in a reserves game when he was seeing his career out at West Ham and it was non stop for 90 mins "What car do you drive?" "How much do you make a week?" Combined with Stuart Pearce shouting "Bang!" every time he cleared a ball...

| Saints charged with spying on 07:29 - May 21 by DWQPR | The lad has obviously been hung out to dry and no doubt it has Eckhart’s fingers all over this. If I was the intern then the best thing for him to do is to whistleblow and admit to every training session he was instructed to spy upon. It may well lead to even more points deductions as I understand that two points for each game admitted has been the sanction so far. Southampton has got what it deserves. Cheats should not prosper and the punishment is not disproportionate. I give the example of Ben Johnson who won the 1988 Olympic 100 metres only to be found afterwards that he had taken performance enhancing drugs. Had he won fair and square he would have been a lifetime hero to the Canadians and no doubt would have earned plenty from his success going forward in sponsorship and other means. But instead he lives a life in disgrace. |
If he's got anything about him he'll be NDA'd to buggery! Southampton should be weighing that lad in to stop him stalking to newspapers or the EFL. Right now he is in a very powerful position!

Reminds me a bit of Sandpapergate when the Strayans got caught ball tampering on their tour in South Africa. They got the youngest player in the team Cameron Bancroft to do the dirty deed. Steve Smith and Dave Warner as the two senior players were also punished, but the bowlers (who had the most to gain from ball tampering) all swore blind that they had no idea what was going on - yeah, right! https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cr The three batsmen all got lengthy bans. Smith and Warner basically picked up where they left off after their bans but Bancroft's career never really got going again. Bancroft is still playing cricket but his international career never recovered. [Post edited 21 May 13:27]

Yes I saw that as well. Not sure it's entirely accurate. I think the FA investigation should include questioning all of Sinners opponents since Eckert was appointed. They also should interrogate all of the staff that report to Eckert directly or indirectly. They need to find out any other games where spying occured. That gap between Oxford and Ipswich is extremely fishy.

I think it might be right. I did an AI search and it said that the EFL is a private company and not affiliated to FIFA. The FA is affiliated to FIFA and is the primary football authority in England. Because the clubs are members of the EFL they are bound by its rules and discipline for breaches is an EFL matter. Because the FA is the main football authority in the country I guess all players are registered with them and have to abide by their rules. Seems like a strange arrangement, but having the PL and EFL as two separate companies running their own tournaments is also a bloody strange arrangement.

Only in FA competitions. So if the FA looks into Southampton's FA Cup run there might still be more punishment for Southampton. But as far as I know the FA has no jurisdiction over what clubs get up to in EFL competitions. But because the individual players and coaches are registered with the FA the FA can investigate their conduct and discipline them if found guilty. All unnecessarily complicated, just so the PL can market itself as an elite competition.

I think the difference is that the spying rule that was broken is an EFL competition rule and thus is administered by the EFL. The FA administers the Laws of the Game so will be looking at it differently. They also are responsible for stuff like the managers qualifications so there’s that too.
