Brighton agree £15m deal for Millwall winger Azeez. Brighton have agreed a deal to sign Nigeria winger Femi Azeez from Millwall. The 25-year-old scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in 37 games last season, earning a place in the PFA Championship team of the year.
This surely puts Burrell who is in the same age range in or around the £12.5m+ transfer fee area? |
The key thing here is it’s Millwall selling one of their best players again…just like Brighton and Brentford did. That’s their 3rd (?) big sale in the last 18 months or so.
We’ve done a pretty good job with the investments we’ve made in the squad but as those clubs further along the journey that us keep showing, it’s only of value if you then sell them at their peak, bring in regular big fees, enabling you to reinvest in more first team players and improve the overall team, and then do the same thing with those signings…
How will we all feel if we sell one of our best players in Jan whilst challenging inside the top 8? How will we feel if we do that in the summer having narrowly missed out on promotion? That is the next step for this club. We can’t fall into the same trap as we did with Willock (arguably Chair) and many before. Sell when they are playing well.
We all want the club to be competitive on the pitch. That’s the name of the game. But for a club with our income, to be competitive year in year out (and not have 2-3 years of relegation battles due to having to cut costs after a gamble year) we have to bring in significant transfer fees every year. If you include Zian Flemming to Burnley in summer 2024 that's four big sales in two years for Millwall.
And ZF now moving to Ipswich for £17m probably triggers a decent sell-on payment as well.

I completely agree we have to be able to start to sell players to be able to compete eventually with teams like Brentford and Brighton.
I don’t think though that there will be a collective ‘we’. I think as with most things there will be a range of opinions from ‘what’s the point in supporting the club if we’re going to sell our best players’ to ‘why haven’t we sold them two years ago’ and all the shades in between.
From my point of view I think the important thing is that we are moving in the right direction. We’ve indisputably improved the quality of the squad over the past two seasons. It’s younger overall; we’ve got more quality; we’ve got rid of some of the weaker players; and we’ve got a better balance with improved talent across different positions including the back up players.
We’ve also made a couple of mistakes as in with Celar and Santos and arguably not selling Varane earlier. It’s not quite clear how much this all has cost but we certainly haven’t paid anything like what some teams have paid in transfer fees like Stoke this season although our wage bill is likely to be bigger. This year’s accounts will be interesting in that regard.
Millwall have certainly got it right in recent times and are ahead of us in the cycle. I hope though that people won’t just compare ourselves to the clubs that are doing it best but also those who are doing it badly or slightly worse than us. For every Millwall there are a couple of Leicesters and Lutons etc. that have got it wrong and even more WBAs and Blackburns who have bought and/or sold a lot but not ended up with even reaching the play offs after either spending big or selling big but not replacing well. If you only compare yourself to the very top then you can get disappointed very quickly and that’s what leads the fanbase to get arsy and we end up tearing up the strategy.
Why? Because in my opinion it’s not just about being critical, sometimes we have to enjoy the game and back the club if they’re broadly getting it right. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t critique things of course not but not rush to judging overall progress down to a couple of mistakes. I hope we do manage to get some big sales soon but if we’re progressing on the pitch while not becoming unsustainable personally I’ll enjoy that for a while.

For me there seems to be a direction we are heading towards with finally joined up thinking at the club.. and I for one am looking forward to where this takes us
There is such a fine line with this methodology of buying, developing and the selling at a profit... and repeat
The Brentfords, Brighton and now to a lesser extent Millwall are clubs that are challenging in their respective division, noone is going to pay 10+ million for a player in a team that is languishing in 15th every season.
Of course Eze was the exception to that rule, but I believe you need to be challenging for honours to make other clubs want to look at your players
This hopefully is the season we start to reap a reward and really begin this cycle od buying, selling and buy again. But we need to also be challenging to put those players in the shop window

I agree with the broad point you are making, but not necessarily every detail.
I don't think there is anything wrong with comparing ourselves to Brentford, Brighton, Millwall, etc. They all show that what we are aspiring to do can work, so it's useful to keep their examples in mind. Partly because they demonstrate that this can work, but also because getting out of the Championship wasn't a smooth upward curve for any of them. Patience is required because there will be missteps and frustrations along the way.
I think it's a bit unfair to say Leicester failed when they won the PL and got all the way to the last eight of the Champions League before losing to Atletico Madrid. For them it was their benevolent owner dying in a helicopter crash that started the downward slide. Although they might have already been living beyond their means by that point.
Luton just surged up the league and have perhaps dropped back to their true level (for now). But they banked a lot of money along the way and are well on the way to getting a new 25,000 seat stadium in the middle of town. So they are well placed to have another go in a couple of years from now.
Blackburn and West Brom had foreign owners who didn't seem to know what they were doing. But in both their cases they suffered because the Indian and Chinese governments decided that they didn't want their nation's capital frittered away on propping up English football teams and made it harder for the owners to get money out of their country.
I think a lot of clubs in the Championship have flirted with the incremental growth model. But like us in the Warburton era they get impatient with the disciplined approach and have a mad rush at it as soon as they get a sniff of the top six.
Hopefully we have learned the lessons from 2021/22 and won't make the same mistake again. | | | |

I agree with your last point in particular. I suppose my general point and what I’m always looking for is a bit of balance from the club and the fans. May be a bit boring for some people and the rollercoaster can be more thrilling but I think it works better in the longer term and keeps my blood pressure down a bit.
