I'm not really sure that I understand the argument that it is unworkable and that kids will find a way around it. Families should not be allowing their children under the age of 16 to have unfiltered access to a smart phone, services like Google Family Link and Kids Place by Kiddoware allow the parents to easily restrict what apps can be used and any app requested to be downloaded needs parental approval. So if a child requests a VPN app it would get denied. I am not saying messages should be read etc but they shouldn't have free reign to do whatever they want online.
As for the social networks themselves, the government will most likely have the power to give unlimited fines. That should be enough to make most social networks tighten the restrictions. The more countries that agree to ban social media, the tighter those restrictions will be. |

I used to work for a reasonably well known Internet security company which provides anti-virus and other security services to mobile operators, telcos, ISPs and other service providers.
I recall that back in 2018, they launched a feature for their Internet security app which enabled parents to disable Internet access for their children based on the time of day. It was also possible to block access to certain websites and apps. As long as the app was loaded onto the child's device - something which was an absolute doddle to do - they were given this level of control. |  |

Chatting to my oldest son, who has a two year old daughter and he said he's relieved that she wont have access to social media growing up.
I think its a good thing and gives responsible parents a bit more leeway in trying to keep their kids off social media. Snap chat is the worst of them all , in my experience.
I agree , its going to be impossible to police it all the time, but its a step in the right direction. |

It's difficult. Our kids weren't allowed smartphones til they were well into their teens, just being given very basic phones before that. But with the way kids communicate these days, they felt left out of things and omitted from that particular social network.
As a parent, it really is hard to navigate, our kids were the only ones without the damn things. | |

I read an article on the beeb earlier questioning if it would be included in the ban. The optics alone of not doing so would be awful, but the latest piece I read suggested it would be anyway.

A few years ago, I made a conscious decision to disconnect from Facebook. I've never been on Insta, and only opened a Twitter account so that I could troll BA! Eventually deleting it once BA sorted the problem.
I come on here, happily so, but have been the loudest advocate of the 'Ignore' button - to avoid any social media toxicity creeping into my day - and regularly mute myself to avoid 'overusage' and to ensure I'm in control.
Personally, I think that's healthy and works for me. I think social media is a modern day evil and after doing my research, I concluded the whole thing was dangerous, and that's before we factor AI into the mix.
Finally, look who own the big social media platforms. Musk, Zuckerberg, Whittingham, Trump, et al and ask yourself a question: would you have a pint with them? If the answer is no, then why pander to them. If the answer is yes, then you're likely to be long-suffering, but right-minded Rfosi, who needs a support system! |  |

For me the main problems for kids these days is that there is 1) no escape and 2) addiction.
When we were younger, went to school and went home. But now if a child is having problems at school they will follow them home and I can imagine this can be impossible for them to deal with. Especially when anything that gets posted can get shared and stored for all to see.
On the addiction, it’s even more difficult given that most adults have head in phone / device for a long time. But it’s not healthy.
The ban has right intentions but for me, it doesn’t address the above. But then, I’m not sure how you can address these issues. | | | |

As long as you see parents walking out with their kids, phone in hand and ignoring social interaction, you see them setting the standards of behaviour to their children. The kids are ignorant of the perils of social media and just trust in their parents to be doing the right thing and setting a suitable example.
How the hell the government expect to police this, I doubt they even know. Sound-bite politics from a running scared PM.

Not quite the same though is it? Kids being addicted to scrolling or being the victim of cyber bullyiing or flashing or whatever is different to the government using it as a one way comms medium.
