Sad news. I would watch him regular at Upton park early 90's as i lived in Vicarage Lane East Ham, a ten minute walk from the ground.
A truly wonderful Goalkeeper in the truest sense of the word. Imposing, Valiant and Herculean. Ludek would put a price of losing a limb to a flying elbow or stray boot to stop his goal line from being breached.
Deeply loved and respected by the The upton park faithful. I loved Jan stejskal and rated him the best keeper i have seen at QPR ( Phil Parks being before my time) yet i grudgingly think Ludek had the edge on Jan, just.
Sadly fathoms past his best when he reached us yet i believe he had our respect as a fine football player and gentleman.

Even though we had him on the decline, he was a steady influence playing alongside some dreadful footballers in the first years I really understood going to the football with my dad. In goal for the 6-0 vs. Palace and the considerably more forgettable disaster at Port Vale the week before.
I knew he was fondly remembered at West Ham but had no idea what a cult hero he was for them. Will be a nice thing to be part of next month. | | | |
