| Preston Reflection 18:10 - Sep 19 with 7382 views | bluenwhite10 | What a game it had a bit of everything. A poor start, a poor Ref, and maybe a poor challenge, but from my seat I couldn’t really see but the player’s reactions either told a story or gave the referee an easy decision to make and poor selection as Dunne was not moving freely though out the game. That’s the bad covered, now let’s get onto the good. Never gave up, controlled the game, energy in abundance. A massive reminder of Derby 2QPR 2 from a few years back when Hamie Mackie got that late goal. Great goal from Paul Smyth and also from Poku Adamson was exceptional when he came on Charles playing so far forward gave out ball from the back which although he did not work in the 1st worked in the second. Created so many chances. Madsen dictated the pace of the game today and Edwards was Edwards in the second half bringing the ball out of defence. Stephen got a call right today in replacing Mbengue with Smyth as we went for it. Crowd today got behind the team well today. MOM could of been Madsen, Adamson but I thought Poku deserved some may disagree. Only a draw but felt like win. Come on you R’s | | | | |

Brilliant atmosphere yesterday the Rangers support were really on it to help the team.

Kamara's performance epitomised that. A mate, not QPR, came round and watched it. He reckoned our MOTM was our manager, and there's value in that.

Yeah the WLS ratings make for strange reading. The very definition of a game of two halves.

| Preston Reflection on 20:03 - Sep 19 by Wilkinswatercarrier | Usually I'd agree as that 1st half was completely unacceptable. It was like watching us maybe 3 or 4 years back. Gutless. However, cone on! We wouldn't have got a point 12 months ago, we have rolled over and hot out tummies tickled. And for me MOTM is Madsen. Absolutely majestic in the centre. Yet he has no song! |
Yes, I thought Madsen was very good the whole game too, kept us ticking over through midfield and did some great work defensively. But my MoM has to be Smithie for nailing the point.

I think for several of the players, you almost have to give them a mark for each half. Kamara was probably a 4/5 for the first half but then a 7/8 for the 2nd, so overall a 6? Thought the WLS rating of 5 was a bit low overall. On the game, thought we were a bit lethargic in the 1st half, gifted Preston 2 goals with some poor defending and seemed to run out of attacking ideas with too many players being static and not enough movement. 2nd half came out all guns blazing using the width of the pitch better and with much more movement from the attacking players in particular. We didn't look like we were the side with 10 men. Also, the atmosphere in that 2nd half was fantastic. As others have said, shades of Derby with Jamie M several years ago.

Let’s keep pushing.” Obviously, poor to get into that situation but to fight back and then want to win it right to the end. No thoughts of seeing it out for a point. With that mentality, I do think we can have a good season. Credit to the players but mainly to Stephan. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Was Madsens worst half for a long time, got nothing right even the second goal comes from him giving it away being too casual. Leon Scarlett was getting some stick but thought he did OK, the problem was in the middle. Second half the intent from minute one was different, pushing forward on the front foot with the midfield playing higher up the pitch. Really could have won the game with the chances we had but great spirit to keep going and get something fron the game. Poku was driving me mad with his cut inside and shoot second half until it finally worked for him, he needs to vary his game a bit. You can spin the result any way you like, great point or now 4 without a win. Neither would be wrong. One other thing, we haven't won since we started playing Hi Ho Silver Lining before the game

| Preston Reflection on 20:08 - Sep 19 by bosh67 | Yes it felt a bit like the Derby v QPR game all those years back when Mackie salvaged a point in the last minute. |
I know what you mean, and with the Brentford match too. For me yesterday’s match was slightly different compared to the Derby one. We were away, and I felt that Derby were deservedly 2:0 up that day. I felt that we offered very little and were pretty poor. When Warnock put Leon Clarke on for Adel, I thought even he’d thrown in the towel. Even when Agyemang got a goal back in the 92 minute, I just had that down as a consolation goal, I still didn’t think we’d get anything, let alone deserve it. Mackie’s equaliser was awesome and it felt like a real smash and grab. We got a point where I felt we didn’t necessarily deserve it. Whereas yesterday, we deserved a point at the very least, and had we played another couple of minutes, could have won it. Mad scenes at both tho!!

How he decided to replace Vale with Varane is baffling. I wonder if any of his assistants in the changing room asked him why Varane?? & give an alternative who should replace Vale or did they agree with the replacement player?? It must have totally altered our tactics & positions for the game which they had been working on during the week. Madness. 2 - The 'boy' should not have started and showed disrespect for the opposition, PNE. Play your best most experienced team from minute 1 - take no chances there was no need to. Wrong. He took him off at HT!!! He should be using him as a sub and introducing him at the right time during the game. Saiko or Smyth should have started. 3 - JCS left out of the side - why?? "2 - The 'boy' should not have started and showed disrespect for the opposition, PNE. Play your best most experienced team from minute 1" Doesn't this make it a little hard to foster a player development model if you're never going to actually start your younger players? I'm not sure what better opportunities you have than where there's a bunch of injuries and you're at home to a team that's lost 6 out of 7 to start the season?

Saito had two efforts on goal. One which he put wide, and he simply had to hit the target having worked his way into position. And the second, he was put through on goal, but hit the keepers legs. And then he was flagged offsite. He’s looking more positive and lively, but I see no end product. It’s a recurring theme since he joined the club. Into his third season at this level now. Needs to step it up. I’d be trying to get my money back on him if I were the club, if that’s even possible which I doubt, and reinvest and bet on something else.

I do not know how old 'the boy' is but he has not been involved much with the 1st team match day preparations, etc. It is massive change from the football teams that he has been playing with. Contrary to firm belief, whilst he has made a promising start to 1st team football he is not ready to start in these type of matches. Championship is 'shite' a lot of the time but it is hard, it is fast, it is physical, it is nasty, it is pressure, its very difficult from playing in front of 2000 crowds and then play with 15000 hungry wanting QPR supporters - he needs to see that 10 yards from the pitch. He should be included in the 16 and get all the atmosphere, pressures, experience of 1st team football......getting ready for that most important day that he longs for. Use him in the 2nd half if the time is right - do not put him under pressure by starting him quite yet.

If we hadn't conceded in the first minute and not got the red card, then Scarlett's contribution would have been viewed differently. He was good and Julien showed faith in him by not making him the first sub. He was subbed for greater experience and, a second tactical change, at HT due to the circumstances then. Varane was actually playing quite well, mainly in an advanced midfield role before being subbed. He was actually passing successfully which many of his team mates weren't. I think it was a first tactical change, after the red card, to go 432 and narrow in midfield but with two forwards. If Jimmy was unfit, as others have suggested, then surely JS would have subbed him with JCS at HT. He may not have been at his complete best but he is our captain, lasted the 90, and inspired his team mates by his effort. The second tactical change moved us to more of a 423 or 4221 with Saito and Poku providing more width as we had to get hold of the game. Bringing on Smyth as an attacking RB was an inspired substitution by the manager.

There is a lot I agree with there gazza. Firstly, the replacement of Vale by Varane was baffling to me. IF he is your choice, then he has to sit as the deepest midfield player & you push Madsen forward. Secondly, I agree with you that Scarlett is not ready for Championship football at the moment, but he was our only player in the first half that looked as though they MIGHT create anything. Adamson being our only other player of note. I do take issue that you "play your best most experienced team from minute 1". Experience doesn't automatically mean that it is the best equipped to win the match. As to number three, I would also have played Clarke-Salter (with Edwards in midfield), but I suspect the decision was based on not wanting him suspended for the West Ham game. 1 - If Scarlett was playing as well, as you are suggesting, then understand that he would not have been substituted at HT. He did OK and that is about it. The Manager should have started Saiko or Smyth & not Scarlett and taking him off at HT proves the point. 2 - There would not have been the need to substitute him at HT for more experience, as you say, if the Manager started the right wide player. 3 - Once again, if Varane was 'playing quite well' then why replace him. He should not have started when Vale got injured.

On 1, what we don't know is the exact reasoning in picking Scarlett from the start. Perhaps Smyth or Saito weren't considered fit enough to play the full 90 which also might explain why Saito didn't start once Vale pulled out?
