What is this latest annoying trend to start every sentence in a conversation with "so"?. You wouldnt write it in a sentence so why do it in conversation?

I first started noticing this about 5 years ago & drives me up the wall.

The strange thing is that I've never come across it in real life - it seems, bizarrely, to have originated in academia, and is most frequently used by scientists, university lecturers etc. during interviews on Radio 4. You'd bloody we'll think they'd know better. Politicians are now infected.

Unsurprisingly, it seems to me that it began in American academic/university circles.

Utterly awful.

You're certainly not. I started noticing this a couple of years ago and once you've noticed it you can't un-notice it. Someone being interviewed on telly the other day (can't remember who, maybe on Sunday Brunch) started every answer with the word "so" - about five answers in a row. And then there was Noah Cyrus saying "like" every other word. I despair.
