There seems to be an increasingly emerging trend to view football clubs’ success in terms of their finances and as straightforward businesses. You can’t improve a club’s position through financial management if the playing side is wrong- that’s just fiddling while Rome burns. The ONLY way to make a football club financially viable is for it to be successful on the pitch. There’s no way the yanks will see a return on their investment without PL football. Hard to judge him imo. He’s here to do a job, but he is a football man with a lot of experience. In theory he’s the type of guy you’d want, but I’ve no idea on his brief except he’s having to work under restrictive financial constraints. I bet we could do a lot worse.

According to the Western Mail, the Club had a revenue of about £126m during its last season in the PL, that will drop to £30m next season last year of Parachute Payments and about £15m to £20m the following season when the Parachute Payments finish. That’s a huge drop to have to deal with, especially when the club have to honour pre existing financial commitments such as player transfer fee payments, wages re contracts etc, losses on purchases etc.

I don’t have access to the Club accounts and I don’t know what if anything has been taken out of the club, but I’d wager Birch has got a tough job on his hands. I reckon he got some breathing space with the sale of James and McBurnie, but there are still some big commitments on the pay roll.
He’s a “turn around” specialist, he’s on a good wedge, but I would imagine that the owners see that as small beer in the grand scheme of things be cause he’s trying to protect their investment. The Club owners have appointed someone who is well respected in his field and they have appointed him early doors, which is better than leaving it until it’s too late and the club evaporates!

For Birch to "save the club", the only thing he can do is cut costs. If he does his job properly, we will hopefully be a financially stable Championship club with new owners within 2 years. If he cuts corners then problems may arise.
Things could be a whole lot worse. Had Huw answered the phone (btw I am NOT excusing his past behaviour), we would have received 1.5M upfront for James's loan, and 2.83M last transfer window, with 2.83M to come in each of the next 2 years. Had we not sold McBurnie, he would be struggling up front from the lack of service just like Borja/Surridge, and we would've been paying Borja and Ayew's wages while they were out on loan.
