Anyone generally fcking shit scared.
I am for my family, here and in Spain, the daily announcements that things are getting better or levelling out don't seem to be right. Is the truth really out there...

How did this really start is another issue.
I mean we spent 3 years arguing the toss about brexit and leaving Europe, now we can't even sensibly leave the house.

OK I've changed it.

UK death rate is astonishing on 18:15 - Apr 17 by Muteswan

My 89 year old mother died in a nursing home just under two weeks ago having had a very sudden raging temperature and great difficulty breathing, within a couple of hours she had passed away. She did have underlying problems such as COPD but this happened very quickly. She was not tested for Covid and it was not on the death certificate but it appeared very much like it. The funeral directors told me they were treating deaths like this as “query Covid”. Unfortunately I’ve had the “shielding “ letter from the government and I’m self isolating for 12 weeks and couldn’t attend the funeral today which was heartbreaking but we’re going to have a memorial service when all this business is over and all the family and friends can come along.
RIP Mam, a big Swans Fan.

My sincere condolences to you and the family Mute.

It was true according to the news a couple of days ago. A doctor explicitly said that if an elderly person had died and that Coronavirus was suspected but not proven they were encouraged not to include it and list another cause of death, such as Alzheimer's.

What news website was that? Which doctor said that?

I struggle to believe the government would encourage every doctor in the country to falsify causes of death to cover up the number of people dying from this virus.

Think logically and stop spreading nonsense.

Testing ‘protocol’ is nothing short of shambolic here in Wales.

My partner is not displaying any symptoms thus far but is isolating at home with me as two of her NHS colleagues she has been working alongside have tested positive and are quite poorly.

She had a phone call from work this morning and was advised that she and 4 colleagues from the same place of work must be tested following PHW authorisation and was given a phone number to ring to arrange it.

All five of them anxiously phoned the number but were all told that they knew nothing about it and to go back to their Line Manager !!

Still waiting to hear what the hell is happening four hours on absolutely disgraceful.

This is just outrageous.

I saw Drakers on TV yesterday being asked why only 755 people were tested one day earlier in the week which was just over half the maximum number of tests that could have completed. He talked about changing the testing procedures to ensure older folk transferred out of hospital in to care homes are tested and fudged a bit more.
We are well down on testing against what we were promised a month or so a go ( and so is England for that matter) and not using a significant proportion of what’s available to you is mental, I was also raging to find out that they had closed the testing centre in Cardiff on Bank Holiday Monday, st just not good enough. I also read yesterday in one of the national papers a scientist working in a testing lab commenting on the lack of samples to test on account of potential shortages of swabs.

Before anyone starts to go on about WAG v Westminster etc, the fact is they are both coming up short and both leaving the people down. WAG are responsible for local service delivery, but funding, strategy and looking at the “bigger picture” is the responsibility of central government who are coming up well short.

Could you point me at last Tuesdays figures then please...?
BBC are still using the 14,576 hospital only numbers as i type.
Thats not the full UK number.

Yesterday Hancock confirmed to Piers that released hospital patients are not tested for Coronavirus before they enter a care home. That is criminal.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplep

The figure for up to April 3 is the most recent. On Tuesday, they will publish again.

The report also includes total deaths whatever is on the certificate, as there are differences in what different doctors do, so the overall number compared to average is crucial. Muteswan’s sad news shows that anything other than the total number is too dependent on different decisions.

The people who are dying in care homes, their own homes, hospitals or anywhere else are all equally important, whether tested or not tested and this report from the ONS needs to be widely shared IMO.

Agree re testing. It’s shocking.

Irrespective of any cause of death, it’s the difference in the total number over average (I think they call it the excess death number) that’s important. And it’s published every Tuesday.

It’s exactly the same for flu. That’s how they measure the number of people that die from flu. They don’t do a test and not all doctors include it. I

On the daily update briefing yesterday (I think it was), the Deputy CMO stated that week ending 3 April there were 6000 ‘extra’ deaths to normal, and 3,700 ish had Covid written on the death certificate, but all others would be considered as either directly or indirectly Covid related. The point being that Someone who doesn’t go to hospital after a stroke because they are scared is STILL a Covid death, just indirect.

Chris Whitty said that is the UK wide approach if the virus seems to be a factor then include it, Lisa says that in Germany they only include it if it is the definitive cause.

It's been said plenty of timea that many will die because of Covid-19 but not of it. It is sadly inevitable. Some people want to sensationalise the already sensational.

On the OP, scared, hell yes. We found out today someone we know has died of Covid, she is NHS and was a truly lovely person. When you lose someone you know it gets even more real, more scary.

Muteswan, truly sorry to hear that news.

Thanks for the kind thoughts everyone.Despite a lot of online disagreements between many posters,it’s at a time like this that the Planet Swans family all pull together. It’s been a really crap couple of weeks and when you’re unable to get out and meet friends and relatives, reading the varied opinions about so many different topics has helped. Mam was a big Swans fan and has been to numerous games this year, the first game back at the Liberty will be a tug on the heart strings but I’m sure she’ll still be shouting at the ref from up there.
Again, thanks to you all, look after your loved ones and stay safe.

Every single death is being recorded and published every Tuesday. No death is excluded and deaths from the virus are given in total even where there is no testing.

People are confusing this with the daily update number, where all countries shown on the daily graph save France are only recording hospital deaths. It’s been explained why. It’s due to speed of reporting and accuracy, and is only there to provide the direction of travel as quickly as possible.

Germany are not reporting as virus deaths those deaths where the person is believed likely to have died anyway. We are.

Thank fck for Tuesdays.

Just a quick update to the questions you asked DYSS as I couldn’t remember the answer when you originally asked.....

I heard it on Ch4 news and then on Friday night, the day after I posted it here, Nick Abbot referenced it on his LBC show. I can’t link to it but if you listen to it on catch up it was about 1 hour 45 in to the show.

I’m not saying it is factually correct, never did, just said it was reported on the news and now I’ve answered the question. Ta.
