Meet the Ref
Andy Davies

Andy meets Olly
Andy boy has been a referee for eight years, retiring from football at the age of 28 he previously played for Portsmouth, Yeovil and somebody else I can’t remember. In his spare time Andy oven roasts live turkeys, which at this time of year makes him everyone’s friend except people from Turkey. Now hear this, now hear this, he has reffed well over 200 professional games, and only on six occasions has he not booked players. He booked eight in a game between Cardiff and Villa two years ago, no problems there, but he loves a card, it’s frightening. He sends players off far more than any other referee in the professional leagues, he has been the subject of many complaints by managers, fans and hits the headlines a lot with his decision making. Don’t think that those eight yellows at Cardiff are a one off, he regularly hits the five or six mark, and frighteningly seven. And as we have said he has only completed six games with no cards, from well over 200 GAMES, think about it. This guy has a way of changing games. This will be cardo’s fifth swans game he has been allocated. What will we get on Saturday ?

Turkey rustler Andy Davies, frightening card stats

What is a Barnsley ?
Barnsley is a hedonistic town in the north of the north. It’s a regular haunting for the likes of ghosts and Darren Gob from Talk Sport. Dazza Gobba is from Monk Breton in Barnsley and we will come back to that later. He alleges that he was once offered a pro football contract by Rotherham United. So, now it’s later why Monk Breton ? simple, it’s where Garry Monk was born, when they slapped his arse in the delivery room they noticed he was wearing an expensive watch and his wife took it off him. Barnsley is famous for the amount of magic mushrooms that can be located over a specific acre of field in a secret area everyone knows about just outside the town. In 2011 the Barnsley chop was banned in the town, the chop is a piece of meat, a cut close to the spine of an animal. At this point the animal is dead, or nearly dead, sometimes it is very dead. The Barnsley chop isn’t banned in Monk Breton and Gawber. Gawber is now called that name because someone in the past decided that would be a good idea. The name remains.

Barnsleh ! was the first English town to cater for people with no heads in the T-shirt game

92,000 people live in that Barnsley where the favourite pastime of locals aged forty and over is playing in brass bands. Only 1% of the population is Asian before you lot start, but it does have countless white people of British birth, I don’t know why I am going here, but why not ? it’s a fact. The town isn’t as multi cultural as Whitland or maybe Kenfif Hill, but who is caring ? Don’t start your nonsense on here or I’ll offer you out. Ok ?

Thingy, you know the umpire bloke and Michael Parkinson who actually came round our house once are from Barnsley. That’s about it, only five people who live there are called Lee Barnes.

This is Darren Gobs house in Barnsley, it’s got a lovely paint job. Tha knaws

And I suspect people who disagree with my opinion are all football managers then?

Btw I've coached rugby teams for almost 15 years so I've got a good idea when players are tired and should be substituted, that's why I'm banging on about it.

Can’t you see that coaching rugby players has absolutely no relevance to whether our players today needed a rest.

All players will tell you they’d prefer to be put on that pitch. It’s what they love to do and whilst we have a hectic schedule you can guarantee that they’re training schedules will be allowing appropriate recovery times after games and travel. It’s mostly a young hungry and fit squad now. I don’t think our lads get enough credit for that.

The squad is rotated as and when it’s needed. Ayew has been off colour recently but he’s a match winner isn’t he.

Its not about wanting to be on pitch I understand every player wants play every game and they are all fit lads and won't feel tired as in fitness ways, but their bodies will get overworked if not careful and that's when we will start to see muscle injuries and niggles,I personally thought after going two up should made a couple changes ayew especially

You do know that I am not blind you know

I can see when my players are getting tired and therefore sub them.

I can also see that watching the swans that certain players' performance drops as the game develops, it was clear in the first 20 mins on weds that our energy levels were far lower than derbys.

And imo the state of our pitch has helped us recently rather than hindering us, as we know the championship is a very competitive league where regularly teams at the bottom can turn over a team at top, imo if our pitch had been pristine then the likes of barnsley, luton and definitely could have turned us over.

I just hope that cooper starts using the squad he has at his disposal, either that or get loan or transfers in that he wants to use.

Both clubs in the season following relegation and both with squads full of Premier league players.

Do you think those examples are really comparable to us?

I think those examples prove my point that just being in such and such position in the league table doesn't tell you the whole picture about how well a manager is/isn't doing. No need to shift the goalposts as if I've said Cooper should be sacked for having us in 3rd.

Yea i fully acknowledge the fact that some manager's get sacked for a variety of reasons such as high expectancy levels while working with talented squads while being in relatively high league positions. There are plenty of other reasons for it to happen - improper conduct etc.

None of these apply to our current situation, so not sure why you found it relevant to bring up. I maybe wrongly deduced from you doing so that you were saying that he should go. Not exactly words of a fan supportive of his performance are they?

I don't think he's a very good manager, no. We're muddling along in a poor division. Functional and tedious to watch. Not a sackable offence. Is the nuance here too much for you?

Watford man is gone. Fans complaining about the quality and entertainment on display despite results and league position being in-line with what you'd largely expect. They've got a good squad but hardly a dressing room full of world-beaters.

If they want to pay compo they can take Cooper but try to keep Margetson.

I'm aware of his drawbacks too but unlike some i evaluate the whole package and realise he's currently doing a very good job.

I don't think being in 3rd place, 2 points off second nearing Christmas should ever be described as 'muddling' though.

Cooper's doing the best he can with what he has available in a piss poor division. I have no complaints about the points he's racking up, but I do have long term concerns about the sustainability of the type of football he's employing to do so.

I'll give him more respect than I did Garry Monk, who had far more resources available to him at a higher level, but lacked the humility to realise that he didn't know it all.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Great post Doc.

If the yanks can put their short hands into their deep pockets and get an out an out striker and we get mgw back then we could have a good chance at automatic promotion

If the Yanks can invest what the club can afford to sustain. Which might not be all that much in the current situation.

Whose money are they going to speculate with should be the question. I find it amusing to read that yets again the league "this year is poor", the core of the Championship is made up of big clubs with better resources than our selves, long established Clubs at this level .To think some think we should be higher than our current position is imo ludicrous . We're developing as squad , and with all good squads you build from the defence , thats looks like its sorted, we've no recognised striker other than Cullen who Imo i think this level maybe a step too great so playing with two midfield players as our main attacking threat may not be the most effective but its keeping us up there in the top six. Hopefully we secure a recognised striker either as a loan or permanent signing in January .Everyone was purring over our performance against cardiff ,maybe its because we played on decent pitch and maybe the performances will improve once the new one is installed, we'll have to wait and see.

and any boxer would tell you he d rather not be stopped when getting battered so the trainer stops the fight for hi own protection-but you know better ,obviously.

Cooper should be ensuring ALL players are looked after to perfrom 100 % all game.

Ayew needs a rest .He is a top pro and a great team man but ALL the great managers manage players. Sane and Salah have been rested by Klopp. But Steve knows better?.

Good summary that Doc, seeing as how Covid has/is impacting football outside the Prem I think our current model is broadly sustainable - provided we can keep bringing the kids through - at this level but will not work if we were to find ourselves going up.

That said our owners, I suspect, would see going up as the best opportunity to exit.

When you have the quality of players that klopp has at is disposal and are winning 5 nil you can rest as many as you like. When you are only 2 nil up you make sure you win the game. The players now have a week off.

Have you never thought that some people think we can do even better penc?

I just think we can do better, I'm happy with how cooper has done in his time her, but I truly think we should have more points on the board, we have a squad of players that he is not utilizing and as has been said plenty of times before some players will burn out and pick up injuries if their gametime is not managed.

We all have our opinions, yes some peopld are naturally negative, some positive, ateotd we are all jack b@stards who want the best for our team.

It's ridiculous. If we get ONE player in Jan, a proper forward it will make a huge difference. Yesterday the ball kept coming back time after time so the whole team were on the back foot constantly.

That forward and MGW back from injury will make for a very interesting second half of the season. Provided they don't sell a few of course.

Our squad is not as strong as the three teams who were relegated from the PL last season so the fact we are 3rd is nothing short of incredible. Every team thinks they should have more points than they have that is football sometimes you play well but don't get what you deserve Norwich and bristol away come to mind . A few times we have been lucky to win .

No matter where we are in the league or season there should have beem subs made after the second goal, there was no way we were going to lose so it was a perfect time to rest key players and give players who need time on the pitch gametime.

There will come a time and I hope not when a key player will get an injury caused by playing too many minutes and I bet cooper will get pelters for playing said player too much.

They’ve got a whole week to QPR. He could bench Ayew or Lowe, start Palmer and Smith and manning too. Give the young lad from Man City a chance and rest Guehi.

The squad Cooper has assembled ( in difficult circumstances) currently only behind the 2 teams relegated from the PL last season?

The majority of neutral football supporters would probably say we are in a higher position than they thought we would be at this stage of the season.

So called fans find reasons to knock Cooper ( & certain players) every opportunity they can

And really should have beaten Norwich away too. We just have to write Derby off, bad day at the office but a great recovery today against a team who’d won 4 out of their last 5? And we’re third !

I thought it was an excellent battling performance yesterday. We played Barnsley and the pitch very well. Defence was magnificent, Lowe and Fulton outstanding.

Well done Cooper and the squad.
