Drakeford wants it, devo max, go Federal, whatever you want to call it. His speech said a lot but was very light on detail. It was full of optimistic generalisations without saying much at all.
It is obvious now why the Labour party wanted to give the vote to 16/17 year olds, they are targettting them at the next election with this home rule demand because they know young people are more likley to support it, or independence.
This change in the voting laws was nothing to do with democracy and everything to do with tilting the vote in their favour but maybe it'll backfire and those youngsters will vote Plaid?

That aside, whn will we hear details? When will Drakeford give us the opportunity to weight up his plans?
He has also said more than once he won't serve a full term if he wins, that most likely means we'll have Gething foisted on us...from frying pan into the fire then. Can we vote for a party when we know the leader isn't interested in doing the term? Certainly people didn't like it when we had Bojo foisted on us, plenty said we didn'tvote for him and said it wasn't democratic.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Drakefird is a man who never had a proper job in his life. Only once the golden egg of the Welsh assembly came along has he had a chance to shine. Sadly it has exposed his dithering and failures. He has seen the long decline of the NHS, education in wales. Rising poverty yet he still dithers about crucial decisions. 10 years after the clear need to build the M4 bypass to receive the choked arteries of the bryglas tunnels he cancels it without any solution. His only policy to date is to give votes to school children in a desperate bid to hold onto power.

Westminster kept Wales so poor we qualified for structural funding from the EU to help us.
Westminster ignores Wales.

Building the M4 bypass now, with work and travel changed forever post Covid would be pretty dumb even for you. To say nothing of destroying the environmental areas of European significance. Doh !

If I can add a bit more to my thinking to help you understand where I come from.

Todays 7 day case rates actually refer to the tests done between 23 Feb and 1 March. The rate of the virus has been dropping during this period and since and is likely to drop for at least 2 weeks from the date any change takes place. The rates for every local authority west of Cardiff except Merthyr is under 50 cases and dropping. Pembrokeshire is already under 20 and these figures will drop further. As examples Pontardawe, Cadoxton, Neath Town, Neath South, Briton Ferry and Skewen and Jersey Marine have had 0-2 cases each for the last week. Baglan and Neath Abbey have 3 each. There are other places slightly higher but as they drop the figures in Neath Port Talbot will be negligeable so I can see in those circumstances how we can open shops before England.

It is very much the same position in Swansea. Every area to the west of Sketty has between 0 and 2 cases. There are some cases elsewhere in the city but it is likely they will shortly drop to extremely low figures. The whole of Aberystwyth has 0-2 cases. In Pembrokeshire Narberth is the only place with more than 0-2 cases.

The seven day average of cases is a pretty meaningless statistic if you don't take onto account the number of tests carried out.

Number of tests in last 24 hours.

England 952,000
Scotland 19,142
Wales 12,362
NI 9,188

% of positive tests
England 0.53%
Wales 1.62%
Ni 1.87%
Scotland 3.0%

If you don't do enough tests you won't find new cases. If you do few tests your 7 day average goes does. Yet another Drakeford failure. He should be doing more testing now to find more asymptomatic cases.

That is what I said. He has not had a proper job just a academic who has no experience of running a business in the real word.

Ignorance.

For those of us who live and work in Swansea, the 2 Universities are hugely important institutions for our future prosperity.
To suggest you dont need business acumen to create and operate these wonderful institutions is plain wrong. That includes the quality of the teaching offered.

In your world , say, John the small business man is heroic, whereas the universities are to be sneered at.
In reality John employs about 4 people, the universities many thousands.
Your disrespect is ignorance, or prejudice.

Are you still bitter about failing GCSE Art or something ?

Others are saying what I have. Based on your comments you are right wing.

You dont like Drakeford, Gething, Price all left of centre politicians. I think highly of all 3 and others. I actually quite like a few Plaid people and Kirsty Williams largely because they persue a left of centre agenda. Both Adam Price and Llyn Ap Iorwerth have been very good as has Helen Mary Jones. All are left of centre politicians who have largely backed the same policy over covid as Drakeford and Gething.

How successful Drakeford has been should be looked at in accordance with the facts which show his government has been more successful in terms of deaths and new cases than the idiot prime minister. Using the official gov.uk statistics used daily by all UK governments the current facts show

Current rate Wales 49.6 England 74.4
Rate from start of Pandemic Wales 6498.40 England 6555.4. At one point last summer England was over 1000 points ahead of Wales
Deaths within 28 days of a positive result Wales 170.8 England 194.6 This is the statistic used in the press conferences. Wales has the highest amount of people over 80. 55% of all deaths are from people over 80 so it would be expected the Welsh rate would be higher because of that.

It has been said that ethnicity is a large cause of covid deaths. However the death rate in the 3 Welsh authorities with the highest ethic rate is lower than other areas with ethnicity of a fraction of those rates. Cardiff has 19.1% BAME, Newport 12.3 and Swansea 8.4 compared to Rhondda Cynon Taff 3.4, Merthyr Tydfil 2.3 and Neath Port Talbot 2.3 Death rates are Cardiff 220.1 Newport 225.4 Swansea 243.3 RCT 355.6 Merthyr 334.8 and NPT 318.9.

The figures show that the policy used by Drakeford's government has worked. Early in the pandemic there was a 1000 point deficit as against England whereas now that has turned to a 57 point surplus. This is due to the way the Welsh Government has handled the crises and in fairness supported in the main by Plaid and the Lib Dems and also the SNP.

All your efforts to knock our left of centre government arent supported by the facts. This is not just you but other right wingers on here. The reality is that under Drakeford's leadership we have lower rates of the virus and death and the highest amount of vaccine administered. That is why I support the government that you dont.

If he were right wing,so what. It's not a pejorative merely a point of view.
Do the left believe in democracy at all.
Should the right wing be removed leaving only the left-if left is the only good one to vote for.

If elections are free then right and left and centre should be free to vote as they feel without being pilloried.

This site sees plenty of class war from "leftys" full of hate for those they see as "right " wing.

He only calls me right wing becuse I won't bow down and pray to Drakeford like he does. He doesn't seem to understand that there's a huge difference between not liking someone and thinking someone useless. He also seems to think if you're left wing you should support the left wing leaders no matter what. I bet there are plenty of right wingers out there who think Bojo is useless.

Taxman, I saw Adam Price on Welsh politics this morning, he was promising money we don't have, he admitted it, he said he'd have to talk with the DWP about funding his promise for free child care. Then he said he wouldn't go into detail about other promises until the manifesto was released. Though he did admit that his budget would be about priorities, so money would be taken from one place and used elsewhere, that'll be an interesting read. Aparently Drakeford said Plaids plans were "VooDoo economics" and you think I should like Price?

My belief is you look at issues as they are. We should judge how well Drakeford has performed based on the results. The results show the Welsh Government has handled the pandemic better than the UK government. This is nothing to do with political thoughts. It is based on facts and is supported by the Welsh people. Unfortunately there are many on here who wont make that unbiased judgement. They base it on political dogma coming from a right wing perspective. The truth is even if we had no cases and deaths many of these would still be criticising Drakeford's handling of the pandemic.

I think we both agree that a cautious approach was the right approach. Drakeford has largely followed that whilst Johnson hasnt. We see it now with Johnson supporting the opening of nightclubs whilst Drakeford has serious doubts. We saw it last year when Johnson brought in the Air Bridges policy which has proved so costly.

The reality of the position is that Wales which suffered hugely in the early part of the pandemic now has less cases than England and less deaths. The turnaround in cases since last May has been massive backing up the fact Drakeford's policies have been the right ones.

It probably doesnt interest you but what really shines through in Wales is how large the number of deaths have been in valley counties compared to city and rural counties. That is the real lesson we need to learn and find ways of overcoming it for the future. It might well be connected to the valleys way of life and od other things.

I have right wing views bordering on fascism and
left wing ones verging on full on secular Communism.

Nobody should class any individual

Working class to me is an offensive term. Middle classs too.

These terms are bred into us as are religious practices and we have to break free.

We also know Wales has had more deaths per 100k than England and that the Welsh vaccination programme couldn't have succeeded without Westminsters purchase of the vaccine.

Drakefords performance isn't all about the pandemic though, it's not even all about Drakeford, it's about the Senedd (and all it's previous names) as a whole, about its performance over 20 plus years.

Answer my questions about healthcare....

On the other hand, when we look at Bojo, he's typical of the kind of people we elect. That's because of the nepotism, the insular thinking that goes on in the so called elites. That's how we ended up with Stephen Kinnock. People high up in politics decide who comes after them so we end up with a conveyor belt of idiots.

It's time for a change, politics is broken, democracy is broken. I don't think the party (at any level) should decide who stands, in any seat. There should be new rules, anyone who wants to stand should just need to get 10 people to nominate them and the local branch has a ballot.
Needing the support of the nominating officer before you can stand to be a local candidtae is open to abuse. We see people parachuted into safe seats, it's wrong.

How many graduates stay in the area after qualifying in their respective fields, using their qualifications and knowledge to help create new career opportunities ? You do realise that for example Swansea's universities are heavily subscribed with 700 Chinese students , not many stay on on completion of their courses , I don't disagree that they're an important link to our growth as a city but not everyone is qualified nor has the inclination to work within its environs.

Thats true.

The students learn, live and spend.
The Chinese money is as welcome as anyone else i guess ?
Jobs for locals created directly or spin off jobs.

Once they graduate then their opportunities are global, however how good would it be if they stayed and generated wealth in this area.
Maybe an indy Wales could address in a manner that uk govt has failed to do for decades ?

Wales hasnt had more deaths than England. That is using the ONS figures which include many cases where death is suspected to have involved covid. The ONS figures are higher than the excess over the last 5 years. The figures where people have died after a positive test show the Welsh figures to be lower than England's. These are the figures used by government's in the UK and declared daily.

Wales 5,385 170.8
Scotland 7,421 135.8
N Ireland 2,072 109.4
England 109,541 194.6

Wales has the highest number of residents over 80 and over 80s form 55% of all deaths. It has the highest rate of over 65s. 94% of covid deaths are in over 65s and Wales has 3% more than the UK average. It would therefore be expected there would be more deaths but as the official figures released by all governments in the UK show that isnt the case.

If we multiply the Welsh population up until it's as big as the Uk population, Wales would have had more deaths, we would be on over 112000.

An academic is great in a university but no good running a country. Drakeford proves time and time again he is not upto it.

Even our great university employ business people to run and organise them. This certainly cannot be left to the academics

Fortunately I took proper "O" and did not need to the easy ones like art, media studies, performance arts etc.

As far as the figures they are based on the gov.uk site and the final figure for each is per every 100,000 residents. The figures are correct and are based on population so they will show the same.

How can Wales have done worse than Johnson. He is only responsible for the English fIgures. Sturgeon, Foster and FDrakeford are responsible for the devolved nations.

You are now getting really desperate. You ignore the fact that Wales has far more over 80s and 60s than the UK.

As far as trains are concerned their use is limited and as I said far more limited than buses. Where are they going to go on Gower. Where is the route going to be in the Swansea Valley. Really ill thought out. The old track isnt there. Trains might work along the Swansea to Cardiff stretch. They wont work for the vast majority through out Wales.

Where are the stops going to be in Sketty or Uplands. Are you expecting people to go miles to the nearest station. Using the old station in Pontardawe as an example people from the likes of Trebanos and Rhos would have 2 mile walks to the nearest station. Most have short walks now to get to a bus stop.

As far as I can and it might be a bit long winded.

Initially the smaller offices were closed. First Port Talbot was moved into Neath and subsequently Neath and Llanelli into Swansea. Then places like Aber and Haverfordwest were closed. Eventually 2 months ago the largest office in Swansea was closed.

I dont agree with but HMRC'S logic is to centralise all its operations into a small number of offices. I think it is 13 throughout the UK and Cardiff was chosen due to being the big city and also the fact that there was a large concentration of staff already there. Most of the staff in West Wales have been made redundant. I was told by an ex colleague that only 4 staff went to Cardiff but I am really uncertain if that is true.

The issue is many of the staff come from far and wide. We had staff from places as far apart as Narberth and Cowbridge. A large percentage of the staff were getting older as well.

The Welsh Government supported the efforts to keep the office open. The office is large enough to hold 500 staff but there was nowhere near that at the end as many kike me had already retired. It was also supported by local MPs and AS members.

However HMRC was adamant it intended to move from 400 or more offices to approx 13 and these had to be in the bigger centre such as Cardiff, Bristol and Birmingham and wanted offices with over 3000 staff in them. It decided to close Tynant and despite the rubbish being posted on here the Welsh Government had nothing to do with this decision. In fact places elsewhere in the UK have been treated the same.

Thanks very much for the reply. I knew the basics and wondered if you had pearls of wisdom that I wasn't aware of.

The centralisation was I imagine to do with finance. 13 large offices cheaper to run than lots of small offices. And those offices would have to be in large cities because smaller places would not be able to provide 4000 people to staff the place.

Swansea would certainly have been able to provide that number and, call me a cynic but I believe the WAG as was took the easy way out by accepting the Cardiff option because it suited them being able to point the finger at Westminster if people complained about 'Cardiff bias'.

The fact that there were already 1000 or so in Cardiff doesn't count as far as i'm concerned. They could have retained their jobs by travelling to Swansea just as the reverse applied to the Swansea staff. If they didn't want to there would have been hordes of people applying for the spare jobs from Neath/Port Talbot and Llanelli plus as far as Carmarthen and Cross Hands. The developer who built the Cardiff centre site could have built it instead at the old BSC Velindre site which would have been so easily accessed from all those areas.

But the Cardiff option was grabbed with both hands because it also fitted in with their expansion plans for their beloved Cardiff. That's the cynic in me again.

Imagine what a boost it would have given to the whole of West Wales (the poorest region in North Western Europe remember). Instead of call centre jobs we'd have 4000 well paid, secure civil service jobs benefitting all those towns I mentioned along with Swansea.

It's a fact that the Welsh death rate is relatively worse than the UK as a whole. Hang on though, you just defended Bojo so you must be a .....TORY!

I said trains and trams. Buses are practically non existent in rural areas and most people use cars. Seetty and Uplands could be serviced by electric trams. The Mumbles train could be reinstated.
If we are genuine about protecting the environment we have to get cars off the roads and more diesel buses isn''t the answer.

Will you answer the question about healthcare?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

The proportion of over 80's in Wales is only slightly higher than Scotland.

How do the death rates compare?

And he ignores the BAME community, England has many more than Wales, there's probably more in Bradford alone.

He's so concerned about the airport but won't answer my question about healthcare then says I ignore the facts.

Yep.

Plus of course the population density and levels of poverty.

I'll answer my own question. Wales has 2% more over 80's than Scotland relative to overall population. We have 20% more deaths than Scotland per 100,000.

The maths just don't stack up for it to be an age issue.

Now we have the WG threatening a stay local rule when the figures suggest that by their own alert system we should be at level 2 now. Level three at worst.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
