He loves the swans ! So boo him at every turn, don’t applaud this oaf for ninety minutes he is the enemy, then say “Hi mate, you loves the swans mush “ Saturday 14th August 2021 Swansea City v Sheffield United The newly named stadium Kick Off 8pm LIVE a on SKY and on Swans TV if you like a dark market. Officials Keith Stroud will be the referee for Swansea City’s Championship fixture against Sheffield United on Saturday. Stroud has taken charge of the Swans on eight occasions across the past two seasons. He will be assisted by Ian Cooper and Sam Lewis, while Sam Allison will be the fourth official. Keith still collects small beach pebbles from the beach at Forest Green. Sometimes he throws them at his neighbours cats, who throw them back at him. Apparently. Player to watch - Tommy Butler Tommy Butler, the very name strikes fear in to the hearts of blades fans. The mercurial attacker / non attacker, with silky smooth gravy making skills and a little bit of Irish wit is the player to watch on Saturday night. It is expected he will start the game or maybe even not start the game dependent if he has been round Joel Piroe’s house or not. Although Russell Martin “Doesn't know Tommy” he has heard of him as he left a plastic turd in his office last Monday morning. Many swans fans will be looking forward to seeing Tommy again, especially if he brings his plastic dancing bear and veterinary anal infiltrator. What is a McBurnie McBurnie means “Div” in Gaelic. And when you search on the term it explains “ Becomes a div after consumption of the devils drink” Oliver has made the headlines a few times since he left the swans, buying people beer, making gestures towards the tramps in Cardiff, booting members of the public about and driving whilst slaughtered, he has done a great job in keeping up his PR profile. A lot of people who like Olly do so not because he is a nice guy, which we all know he is, but because he played for Swansea City. Weird eh ? He is also a lovely generous chap. Just drink water mate. | Swansea City v Sheffield United : TEAMS Matchday Thread 21/22 on 08:31 - Aug 15 by angryjack | Totally agree we need different personnel to play this system we are lacking pace out wide a centre forward who can make ball stick and link up with midfield,Lowe will never be that ,, Cullen, how he gets in starting line up beats me,he played just behind Lowe but offered nothing, you need creativity there,he just not up to it everything he has played he looks out his depth,as we are not playing with wingers but wing backs high up the pitch I think we need quicker ones than Birdwell and lati, don't get me wrong they did OK but we need more creativity when we attack to get behind..but don't think we going to get many more in so I think we will see a lot of low scoring games as we will keep a lot possession restricting the opposition from scoring but not creating much ourselves. |
We've already got one in thouggh...Laird. Connor to return as well. He will be the pace you need on the right. Bidwell is really good on the left. Swift, overlapping, good crossing, solid defensively. Personally, I don't think you can get much better at this level.

We 100% need a couple in vital positions for this to work properly but whether we get them or not we should still see an improvement as time passes. And if we don’t then management will need to ther adapt or be held accountable |
Exactly. I's about adapting. And to suggest none of our players have the ability to do that is silly IMO.

| Swansea City v Sheffield United : TEAMS Matchday Thread 21/22 on 09:51 - Aug 15 by Dr_Parnassus | Players can adapt to a system if they have those attributes, but adapting their skills isn't something you can really do on a whim. For example, asking Dyer and Routledge to tuck inside as Laudrup did would be a matter of just allowing time to get used to it. But we are asking players to play in ways that isn't in their skillset. That's a whole different kettle of fish. |
How are we, as fans, in a position to judge a young player's skillset? Most of these young players have only been seen playing one way. The ones that were here under Potter have mainly been proven to be able to adapt to playing out from the back. The ones who came through under Cooper are yet to be tested, so how can anyone say they are not capable of doing it now, or even capable of adapting to it? Are you their mother? Have you seen from a young age how poor their adaptability skills are? I think that judging them before they even give it a proper go is only going to be detrimental. If you really believe that a certain player is incapable of adapting to our new way of playing, that player should be moved on. This is how we want to play as a club. If you are truly unable to do that, no offence, good luck, but tara. Sign a player that can do it. What is the point in keeping a player who is unable to pass the ball in a passing system? Personally, I don't think we have many in that category, so we won't need to sell many, but for those who do, then if that's the case, we will have to do it. It may make the project much more long term, but it's not going to change it. This is the project. Like it or lump it. It's not a case of "oh we shouldn't be playing this way, we don't have the players". It's a case of "we are going to play this way, if you're not good enough, move on." There is no rush. It would be nice to get into the playoffs again, but more important to get our club in order. If some don't like it being this way, tough. We are a team who is going to play it out from the back, like it or not. If you don't want to trust this and support it, then do one. Believe in our manager. Believe in our players. Believe we can make this club into what it as before, a ball playing, self sufficient, wonder of a club. If you can't believe that and can't get behind the project, what's the point?

| Swansea City v Sheffield United : TEAMS Matchday Thread 21/22 on 08:07 - Aug 15 by Dr_Parnassus | Not sure why being there 2 weeks changes anything I have written? I have not written anyone off as players or slated anyone, I have just made the point that I don't believe we have the players to be successful in this system due to key technical deficiencies that they have which are required to make this system work. Our players have different kinds of strengths. That's a long term issue and what I was saying last season too, its not something I have decided after this 2 weeks. This 2 weeks is just putting those concerns into motion really for people to see the deficiencies for themselves. Time to bed in isn't going to make Cullen (for example) someone capable of holding the ball up and bringing the midfield into the game, it's not what he is about. The points I am bringing forward aren't time specific. If we were playing Joe Allen up front and lumping balls into the box for him, he can have all the time he wants to bed in but he will never be outmuscling and outjumping 6 foot 5 defenders. These points are technical based. [Post edited 15 Aug 2021 8:22]

Two weeks is very important. The players need time to adjust, if you don't believe they can adjust that's your opinion. Martin has said more players will come in but he can't just magic the players he wants up out of thin air. As you point out, we need the right players so rushing into signings is hardly the right thing to do, it takes time.

Because we have eyes. It doesn’t take Brian Clough to see if someone is quick or slow, can pass well, good at long shooting, strong, gets knocked off the ball easily, calm under pressure etc etc etc You keep making the mistake of thinking all professional footballers can do everything. They can’t. It’s not a matter of belief, it’s literally the way it is. If you asked Mark Gower to be a pacy winger, reckon he could… despite being slow? If you asked Alan Tate to be a player that can ping 50 yard balls accurately to the wings, do you think he could? Even though he was terrible at passing any further than 10 yards on the deck? If you asked Cullen to be a towering striker, pushing 6 foot 5 defenders off the ball and winning everything in the air, do you think he could? Despite being relatively short and not very strong These aren’t things you can’t just ask people to be, regardless of belief. It’s not a case of telling them to do it or leave, because we have nobody there to replace them. [Post edited 15 Aug 2021 13:03]

Not if he doesn’t have the required strength, vision and skill to do it well into their 20’s no. Not to a Championship standard anyway. Otherwise why don’t we just pick up a keeper and just teach him to save everything? Or pick up any striker and teach them to score every chance. We will win everything there is to win in football… Sadly football isn’t as simple as that. [Post edited 15 Aug 2021 13:06]

So you think a smaller player can't be good at holding the ball up? DO you think we should sell Cullen then? Do you think we should abandon the new playing style instead? You think a slower player is unable to play WB? Should we abandon the new playing style, or sell Latibeudiere immediately? What exactly do you think we should do? Sack Martin after a few weeks? Tell him he's not allowed to play passing football? I don't get what you want/expect the club to do now.

Depends who the smaller striker is. If it’s Cullen then no, he’s not strong enough, doesn’t have a good natural eye for build up play and all his life seems to have based his game on being able to run onto balls. Don’t know if we should sell him, depends on if we are going to stick with this way of playing. If so then yes, loan him out or sell him probably. Assuming we have someone to play that role. A slower player is able to play wing back, but if your system requires your wing back to be fast then no a slower player can’t play wing back. Even if your coach is Usain Bolt you won’t be able to teach him to be fast. Sack Martin? Of course not he’s just arrived. But all parties need to be realistic with achieving the best results possible for the club. Until we get the players in that can play the way they want to then we should be a bit more pragmatic with our style. We don’t have to just stick to one style of play when it clearly doesn’t suit many of the players we have. We should play in a way we are suited to and slowly adapt that as the players come in that can play that way.

Cullen needs to go on loan. He will not get the opportunities to score freely with us at this level - half a season or season in league one or two would do him and, in the long term, us a huge favour.

When he was 16 he looked a world beater but it's been slow progress since then. Not many sides at this level can accommodate a pure poacher, even when they're the finished article.

But everyone doesn’t have to be 10/10 in skills or it becomes a Simulation. There other attributes like hwyl (as we love to say in wales), determination to be better which with the coaching can improve. | Swansea City v Sheffield United : TEAMS Matchday Thread 21/22 on 05:53 - Aug 15 by Dr_Parnassus | Whisper it quietly mate, can't you see people are trying to pretend how great everything is now? Its a miracle. Suddenly leaving out strikers is now accepted fare, lack of shots on target isn't a problem and wasted possession is fine. I can't keep up with how the same actions are acceptable and unacceptable based on how the poster in question wants to present it. In all seriousness, it's just 'okay' isn't it. Pretty much how I thought it would be and a reason I was happy enough to play to our strengths instead. A lot of effort but not an awful lot of ability to do it well. We don't have the correct transitional players. Grimes is a good transitional player between midfield to defence and Benda is a good base to start attacks. But we don't have:- - The correct kind of striker as Cooper identified. (maybe Piroe will be, not seen enough) - We don't have the pace to spring quickly into attack like a Dyer or Sinclair - We don't have the Rangel type of player that can overlap (Bidwell is fine at it I suppose) - We don't have that CB that can quickly change an attack with a pinpoint cross-field pass like Williams did. - We don't have the link between midfield and attack (the Dobbie, Pratley, Hernandez). Flynn is a box to box midfielder and maybe he will be, but feel he is more defensive minded than creative. So while it's nice to have possession and knock it about at the back, we don't have the personnel to turn that possession into attacks and ultimately, goals. Unless that is addressed it will continue to flatter to deceive, where ''It will improve'' will become the tagline for every game. I think 65% possession without 3 points may well become an accepted norm. I am not unhappy with it as such, I just see the glaring holes and the reason why we haven't played this way. So I am not overly optimistic we can achieve anything of note... unless we bring in a fair few players. Having said that, a draw is a good result and the manager and team have to be congratulated for grinding that out. [Post edited 15 Aug 2021 5:55]

Excellent synopsis. I agree entirely. But, it’s early days and I’m sure Martin will be aware of where we are lacking. Your ‘65% possession but no 3 points’ summed up perfectly what I witnessed last night. I’m fairly optimistic that if the manager gets his way, that’ll change for the better. We’ll see.

I agree with you and Dr W that "hiding" is too emotive a word. He was pacing himself through the game, ensuring he kept out of battles, not looking for trouble, relying on Matt to do the legwork, which is all very understandable when he is short of match fitness, but he would need to do a lot more than he did on Saturday to impress me as much as others on here.

For many who came through the academy or played under Cooper or before don't need to improve they just have to be given time to do what they did before Cooperball. I remember Cabango being an excellent ball player in the academy sides Grimes and Cooper too.

No matter how much “hwyl” I have, I will never be an 8 foot point guard in basketball. Largely because I’m 6 foot and in my thirties. Dismiss that to your hearts content, it won’t happen. This isn’t a holiday camp where parents drop off their kids and it’s our goal to make them slightly improve on some of their football skills. This is the Championship, they need to be specialised in the aspects we ask them to play in. I’m not saying they need to be 10/10, otherwise they would be Premier League players, I’m saying they have to be a specialist in that technique. You seem to think because they are professional footballers, they can do anything asked of them and of course compete at one of the highest levels in the country in that aspect and be better than players in that discipline who are specialised in those attributes. Where as I know that isn’t realistic.

I’m not saying they can do anything - but I’m saying it’s realistic that some may improve to an acceptable level to be able to play in our new way of playing. To make a comparison to height is ridiculous - any other skills will come with work - at what level they get to will be the defining factor. You honestly think it’s realistic that we can turn someone like Bennett into tiki taka defending extraordinaire to the point he is out foxing the press with calm pin point passing and being able to switch flanks with pin point 50 yard passes to the wide mans feet? Bennett is a professional footballer because he’s strong, decent in the air and solid in the tackle, that’s it. He’s a no nonsense centre back, it’s verging on some kind of Soccer AM sketch thinking you can change any footballer to play any way. It’s pie in the sky stuff. I disagree that we would stall progress by easing us into a style change as and when we get the required players in to be able to do it. It’s just sensible. I really don’t want Bennett messing about with it at the edge of our box, I really don’t want to pretend Cullen is some sort of tiki taka striker that we play to his feet and expect it to stick. I’d rather play a through ball for him to run on to, what he’s good at. Because again, we should be trying to be the best we can be, not just the best we can be in a certain style because that limits us massively, we are creating our own ceiling. Instead of trying to be the best we are simply trying to improve and be able to somewhat compete. Doesn’t sit right with me.

No I’m not suggesting that. Unfortunately I think Bennett may become one of the fall guys which is unfortunate as I really rate his defending. However if the same drills are being performed day in day out on the training pitch then he will improve however slightly. Others however may improve more.

Potentially you are right but if we are to persist with 3 CBs then it can work with one out & out solid defender as long as they have a reasonable touch & can pass effectively over 10/15 yards to the other 2 CBs plus keeper & deepest midfielder - does mean the other 2 CBs need to be more capable in passing terms & ideally able to step forward into midfield with the ball when required.

Agree with this - would happily have Bennett or Cabango central with Manning and Naughton either side - although the way we started trying to play out from the back Saturday we’d need to change or rotate

Exactly. And any professional footballer should be able to make 10/15 yard passes 99% of the time to a teammate. If you are not good enough to do that, then you aren't good enough for this club. Get rid. You could get rid of the system to incorporate these players, but what is the point? This is our new system. Our players need to get used to it. If they can't then it's a shame, but they need to move on.
