| Swansea City v Sheffield United : AFTERMATH Matchday Thread 21/22 15:45 - Aug 11 with 17175 views | NotLoyal | It’s a magnificent return for Oliver Robert McBurnie to his home city of Swansea, the team he loves and adores, the best thing that ever happened to him. He loves the swans ! So boo him at every turn, don’t applaud this oaf for ninety minutes he is the enemy, then say “Hi mate, you loves the swans mush “ Saturday 14th August 2021 Swansea City v Sheffield United The newly named stadium Kick Off 8pm LIVE a on SKY and on Swans TV if you like a dark market. Officials Keith Stroud will be the referee for Swansea City’s Championship fixture against Sheffield United on Saturday. Stroud has taken charge of the Swans on eight occasions across the past two seasons. He will be assisted by Ian Cooper and Sam Lewis, while Sam Allison will be the fourth official. Keith still collects small beach pebbles from the beach at Forest Green. Sometimes he throws them at his neighbours cats, who throw them back at him. Apparently. Player to watch - Tommy Butler Tommy Butler, the very name strikes fear in to the hearts of blades fans. The mercurial attacker / non attacker, with silky smooth gravy making skills and a little bit of Irish wit is the player to watch on Saturday night. It is expected he will start the game or maybe even not start the game dependent if he has been round Joel Piroe’s house or not. Although Russell Martin “Doesn't know Tommy” he has heard of him as he left a plastic turd in his office last Monday morning. Many swans fans will be looking forward to seeing Tommy again, especially if he brings his plastic dancing bear and veterinary anal infiltrator. What is a McBurnie McBurnie means “Div” in Gaelic. And when you search on the term it explains “ Becomes a div after consumption of the devils drink” Oliver has made the headlines a few times since he left the swans, buying people beer, making gestures towards the tramps in Cardiff, booting members of the public about and driving whilst slaughtered, he has done a great job in keeping up his PR profile. A lot of people who like Olly do so not because he is a nice guy, which we all know he is, but because he played for Swansea City. Weird eh ? He is also a lovely generous chap. Just drink water mate. Russell Martin’s biggest test as a manager is here : Today ! 14th Aug 2021 09:39The day is here for Russell Martin, due to obscure regulations on crowds at sporting events in Wales he won’t feel the full atmosphere of a packed Swansea City stadium, but his biggest football management day to date is here. 0 Russell Martin : Those brilliant moments are not far away 15th Aug 2021 09:00Swansea City drew at home to Sheffield United in a goalless draw at the Swansea.Com stadium in front on the SKY Sports TV cameras last night. 16,000 was the capped capacity for the game and they watched a solid performance from the swans. 0 More to follow

Looked to me like he didn't know where to go rather than being unwilling. Between Grimes and Cooper there wasn't much football to play in the areas he worked in at Ipswich. Fulton won't have been comfortable watching on.

More that he and the team weren't quite used to each other. After the first 10-15 minutes he started coming into the game quite a bit, and showed flashes of being a very good player indeed once he's settled in.

Obviously Manning had a great game. Cooper had a great game and Cabango has to get a mention for having to go up against Brewster. I did think that was one of Grimes most impressive and gutsy games for us.

What are the second and third choice goalkeepers like? I can see one of them needing to step up soon enough as Benda surely won't be here much longer if his performances thus far represent his norm.

He’s doing what the manager wants which is something he probably hasn’t had to do before. As long as he learns as develops he will be ok. I Like the way he takes crosses and he appears to be a good shot stopper. At his age that is unusual as most keepers don’t know when to come off their line. The ones that do tend to develop into very good keepers.

You need outlets and the players that can turn possession to channelled attacks you can spring nice you have moved the opposition out of position. We don’t have that and we haven’t for quite some time. Under Brendan, Martinez etc we had a Dyer or a Sinclair (or both) who would be comfortable on the ball and also be able to break the lines. We don’t have that. We also had a Jason Scotland and a Fabio Borini who’s link up play was fantastic with the midfield, both could handle the ball at feet and build attacks. Last year I made the point that Cullen is like a Michael Owen type player, he hangs on the last defender and tries to make runs, he isn’t someone that can help build and attack. I don’t see too much so far to suggest those observations are inaccurate. All in all though, could be a very valuable point. I wasn’t expecting one.

Given half a season in the u23s Webb might be ready for some games. Daniel Barden got games for Norwich last season and he was behind Webb in Wales pecking order before that opportunity fell his way due to their injury crisis. A few highlight reel howlers now and then will hopefully keep people from realising how good he is for a couple of seasons.

Benda is following instructions and isn’t getting it right all the time But He's already a big improvement on Woodman. Commend# his area, makes himself available too receive passes, finds white shirts far more than his predecessor, punches or catches when called on and has made some excellent saves.

To clarify, I think he'll be the subject of bids from top flight teams in England and abroad soon enough if he carries on performing like this. He's an outstanding goalkeeper. That save from McGoldrick this evening was tremendous. He was out so quickly, forced him into shooting early and read his body language and dived the correct way before McGoldrick had finished shooting. He did the same in the previous match on numerous occasions as well. It has been a very long time since I've been this impressed by a new Swansea City player.

Whisper it quietly mate, can't you see people are trying to pretend how great everything is now? Its a miracle. Suddenly leaving out strikers is now accepted fare, lack of shots on target isn't a problem and wasted possession is fine. I can't keep up with how the same actions are acceptable and unacceptable based on how the poster in question wants to present it. In all seriousness, it's just 'okay' isn't it. Pretty much how I thought it would be and a reason I was happy enough to play to our strengths instead. A lot of effort but not an awful lot of ability to do it well. We don't have the correct transitional players. Grimes is a good transitional player between midfield to defence and Benda is a good base to start attacks. But we don't have:- - The correct kind of striker as Cooper identified. (maybe Piroe will be, not seen enough) - We don't have the pace to spring quickly into attack like a Dyer or Sinclair - We don't have the Rangel type of player that can overlap (Bidwell is fine at it I suppose) - We don't have that CB that can quickly change an attack with a pinpoint cross-field pass like Williams did. - We don't have the link between midfield and attack (the Dobbie, Pratley, Hernandez). Flynn is a box to box midfielder and maybe he will be, but feel he is more defensive minded than creative. So while it's nice to have possession and knock it about at the back, we don't have the personnel to turn that possession into attacks and ultimately, goals. Unless that is addressed it will continue to flatter to deceive, where ''It will improve'' will become the tagline for every game. I think 65% possession without 3 points may well become an accepted norm. I am not unhappy with it as such, I just see the glaring holes and the reason why we haven't played this way. So I am not overly optimistic we can achieve anything of note... unless we bring in a fair few players. Having said that, a draw is a good result and the manager and team have to be congratulated for grinding that out. [Post edited 15 Aug 2021 5:55]

😂 They’ve been there 2 weeks! I’ll agree with a few of your points as it stands but surely as a manager it will take time for what he’s trying to ask them to do to bed in.

We’re three games in. Martin didn’t have a pre season. He’s going to be tinkering with starting line ups for a few more yet and our performances are going to show glimpses of class but also look disjointed. He had Manning in a back three (which worked very well), Cabango on the right of the three and Latabaudiere and Bidwell further forward than Cullen a lot of the time. Piroe on the bench and Lowe in a role where he had to hold play up and couldn’t really use his pace. If Grimes stays, I think his first choice midfield partnership looks sorted. We’ll probably see a lot of changes and games where it doesn’t quite click for the next few weeks.

Not sure why being there 2 weeks changes anything I have written? I have not written anyone off as players or slated anyone, I have just made the point that I don't believe we have the players to be successful in this system due to key technical deficiencies that they have which are required to make this system work. Our players have different kinds of strengths. That's a long term issue and what I was saying last season too, its not something I have decided after this 2 weeks. This 2 weeks is just putting those concerns into motion really for people to see the deficiencies for themselves. Time to bed in isn't going to make Cullen (for example) someone capable of holding the ball up and bringing the midfield into the game, it's not what he is about. The points I am bringing forward aren't time specific. If we were playing Joe Allen up front and lumping balls into the box for him, he can have all the time he wants to bed in but he will never be outmuscling and outjumping 6 foot 5 defenders. These points are technical based. [Post edited 15 Aug 2021 8:22]

Totally agree we need different personnel to play this system we are lacking pace out wide a centre forward who can make ball stick and link up with midfield,Lowe will never be that ,, Cullen, how he gets in starting line up beats me,he played just behind Lowe but offered nothing, you need creativity there,he just not up to it everything he has played he looks out his depth,as we are not playing with wingers but wing backs high up the pitch I think we need quicker ones than Birdwell and lati, don't get me wrong they did OK but we need more creativity when we attack to get behind..but don't think we going to get many more in so I think we will see a lot of low scoring games as we will keep a lot possession restricting the opposition from scoring but not creating much ourselves.

Have to say I have no idea what you were watching if you thought the ball kept going back. For most of the game we were looking to get forward. You can't keep going forward or you run out of pitch! To keep possession the ball has to be played back, forward and sideways just as it did under Rogers. Is it any better than Cooper? Depends if you like watching football or the league table. Two weeks, after two seasons of dross, and Martin has totally changed the way we play.

Maybe I just choose to believe that players can adapt and you can’t which is fair. We 100% need a couple in vital positions for this to work properly but whether we get them or not we should still see an improvement as time passes. And if we don’t then management will need to ther adapt or be held accountable

Players can adapt to a system if they have those attributes, but adapting their skills isn't something you can really do on a whim. For example, asking Dyer and Routledge to tuck inside as Laudrup did would be a matter of just allowing time to get used to it. But we are asking players to play in ways that isn't in their skillset. That's a whole different kettle of fish.

There is sense in what Dr P is saying. Some players, Bennett probably being the most obvious example, but I hope he proves me wrong, are suited to playing more rigid, less adventurous football. Some will adapt, others just won’t be suited to what Martin is trying to do. In fairness to the club, they have backed him so far, especially with Laird about to join. One or two more in and a bit of time for him to work out how to best use others and we may see a bit of end product. We had Manning, Bidwell, Latabaudiere and Cullen all in unfamiliar roles last night. Arguably Lowe was more central than he is used to and Cabango was wider. It will take time.

. You're right. And nothing new in us needing new, better players to play and succeed in our chosen system. And you're right, if he is unable to get the players he needs, low scoring bore-fests, mid-table mediocrity with nigh on zero chance of promotion.

You don't think i possible for a player to learn how to hold the ball up and when he's required to do it?
