Swansea City were brave, exciting, outstanding and aggressive against Brighton 23rd Sep 2021 10:24
Swansea City manager Russell Martin was full of praise for his young side against premier league opposition when reflecting on the 2-0 league cup loss. He was right of course, the chances created and the way the swans played at times was superb. 0

Of course being on the bench is being invovled, ask any player, at any level. If they are not involved then why are they wearing a kit and prepared to go on? Regardless, Potter rates them highly enough that he would use them in the EPL or can you think of another reason why he'd have them as subs?

Maybe they are there to sweep the stands down afterwards?

Whatever next, will you be saying you didn't enjoy a win because of the performance?

And you call others trolls

It’s not being involved. They aren’t playing.

What planet are you on? If they were good enough to play then they would play, yet they have 2 starts between them all.

I most certainly call trolls, trolls. Yes.

Including the ones that continue to frame things falsely to present an alternate reality.

“Involved” my eye.

Didn’t enjoy a win? Can’t remember, you will have to remind me what a win feels like.

We have scored in 1 of the last 9 halves of football, a win would be wonderful if you are offering. Failing that, some regular scoring would be a start.

I was there last night. It’s the third time watching us and the third time watching Brighton.

Even with all the changes it was clear the Swans were trying to implement Martin’s style. With Brighton’s changes they played nothing like I’ve seen previously - they’re considerably better than yesterday’s showing.

Having said that, I enjoyed watching us more last night than I did in 90% of performances under Cooper.

THis is what MK DOns have been saying about Martin....yes like when MArtinez left it left a sour taste and many of our fans posted negatives but any similarities seen here to pur current football and last seasons DOns?

I was never convinced that we would have had a strong season under Martin this year. His style of play would never have allowed for it. Way too focused on just keeping the ball, rather than actually doing anything with it. The reason why I was annoyed, is he brought himself time here by continuously saying the team was a work in progress and then jumping ship just before the season, where it was all supposed to click, was about to start.

I'm convinced that eventually Martin will be found out as a fraud. He is extremely good with a camera pointed in front of him and will always say what he thinks the fans want to hear. You just have to look at his interviews so far with Swansea and they are almost creaming themselves over what he says, rather than judging him on results. I've seen some of their fans actually say that they are so impressed with him, that they'd accept relegation in his first season, after getting to the play off final last year! Fair play to Martin, he is one hell of a con artist. If you look at their first few games, they've had all the possession and done pretty much sod all with it, while the opposition have created more chances.

I have enjoyed the 4 games under Manning far more than probably any game under Martin. We have played with a purpose, rather than aimlessly passing it around at the back. I'm convinced Martin only played that way to get the country talking about our style of play and how much possession we were having (multiple articles were written about it). From an outsiders point of view, it looks impressive, but really, we almost got relegated in his first season and finished a disappointing 13th (given the squad we had) in his second. Only Danny Wilson (2004-2008) and Dan Micciche (2018) have a worst win rate than Martin, out of all the permanent managers in our history. Tell me this guy is not a fraud.

It wont be long before Swansea get real tired of possession based football that creates 1-2 chances a game.

But time to move on for us. Him having a good or bad season is meaningless.

I do feel the brand of football he plays is the best way to get his name out and get us the top of stats lists which are going to make him an attractive hire. It's also attractive for players to come and play here to showcase their abilities and get a move up the pyramid. But as you've said i much prefer this more slightly direct style that Manning seems to be playing and we're clearly not going to struggle to score goals this season. I'll happily take a few goal kicks going straight through to the opposition keeper if it means i can be as entertained as i have been so far this season. Playing the ball around on the deck to consume time when needed but still trying to play through the lines quickly when a gaps there to be exploited I'm more than happy with and combine that with every league game this season being a fantastic advert for league 1 football i think the reduced season tickets are going to be well worth the money.

So refreshing and enjoyable to watch us not force playing out from the back. Under Russ, Fish would have passed to Darling and then tried to find another ground pass. Now Fish seems encouraged to play a long ball if needed. He still comes out a fair bit with the ball, but we don't have that rigid pattern of play which, lets be honest, caused a few near misses and goals last season.

Ultimately, we're more positive and assertive pushing forward instead of aimlessly passing in midfield just for the sake of possession, but also more careful at the back taking less risks and using common sense over playing strictly out from the back.

Best of both worlds.

Martin has won nothing at all.
He raised the mighty franchise club that all despise to a higher than hitherto level in the Third level. This is enough for our fans to pay their hope and dreams at Russy's feet like a modern day Disciples of Jesus, except this fella aint Jesus, not even John the Baptist.
Our expectation have been lowered so far so fast that losing is enjoyable as is a draw. 0-0 draws are seen as "positives" .Yeah folks ,losing is now enjoyable as it will be better in the long term although long term cannot be defined yet by Russ.

We have players playing out of position playing to a system they are unsuitable for now and will be until we are truly bottom of league and looking relegation candidates. I doubt the home fans will swallow glorious defeats even though we passed the ball pretty. We have signed some good players and some sicknotes and should have enough to stay up at least but defeats and draws will eventuallly wear them down as it will fans.

You could say Im rather cynical but I can smell Bs even through the Net.

hope Im wrong and Russy leads us to the promised land.

My prediction is he will be gone by the end of the season and we will be genuflecting

You have predicted we would barely see Walsh again and he will ultimately have his contract be paid up like Tom Carroll.

It was a huge blunder according to you (presumably without inside information from the clubs medical staff and consultants).

He has featured in the last two games with no tweaks reported. I hop he settles down and plays 30 +games. it is not an unreasonable expectation.

I have postulated Piroe could turn into a great signing based on limited game time. I was honest enough to present that theory as a 'hunch' and 'gut feeling'. I think you posts are similar to this without you explicitly declaring them as such.

I have not doubt Martin believes in what he is ding and now has much better players to mould to his methods. I do not believe he is a fraud.

He enjoyed the game, great. Did I claim he didn’t?

I claimed we lost needlessly when we were up agains a Brighton team full of youths and reserve players.

Exactly Cat, the subs are a massive part of the team, looked what our subs did on Saturday 🙄

So glad to see that alot of fringe players got good gametime last night, they are part of the squad and will be needed as the season goes on.

You think subs that don’t come on or play any part - are a massive part of the game?

Really?

I can’t even fathom that view. I can only assume it’s trying to change the narrative to represent anything other than reality again.

There is a lot of that recently.

When was the last time a non Premier league Swansea team beat a Premier league team (or first division team) away from home?

West ham was at home at the Vetch. 3-2 v Spurs under Toshack perhaps 1980. Last time Swansea beat Spurs actually.

Yes it as a loss but a spirited performance. Chances were created.

You had written off Walsh expecting him to feature rarely and then getting paid off due to his repetitive injuries. 2 or 3 outing under his belt since those words. Do you no think you are a little on the overly pessimistic side.?

Portsmouth 2-0 in 2009 FA Cup, and Sheffield Utd 3-0 in 2007 FA Cup. Can't think of any others off hand, certainly not since the early 90s.

You claimed we lost needlessly but nobody, not even you can be certain we'd have won if we'd played our best team. Claiming otherwise would be silly.

Again, against Leicester those 8 players were considered good enough to be put on the pitch or they wouldn't be on the bench, good enough for the EPL but not good in your eyes, I'm sure you know better than Potter!

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Now now, Max, we all know when he's wrong, that he can't see it is his problem. If answering him inflates his ego, even when you're saying he's wrong then that's his problem.I just don't like people running the team down before they all had a fair chance.

In another few weeks I could easily be agreeing with him, if things haven't improved, I'm just not doing the knee jerk nonsense. 10-12 games and you need to see that we have moved forward, if things aren't better then, then the manager needs to get a shift on because the crowd will turn. Because he didn't get a pre season Martin has a bit more leeway amongst the more patient, sensible fans.

If everybody behaved like Dr P then Alex Ferguson may never have produced the great Man Utd teams, Klopp would be somewhere else maybe because expectations are much higher at those clubs too. Patience and stability are good traits, specially in a club with limited resources. Klopp took 3 years to win something,

Where am I claiming we would have won?

If we have ourselves the best chance of winning the game with this selection, then I expect this to be the team that runs out against Huddersfield.

It was a needless team selection.

Of the starting 11 they played against us, they had 2 starts between them. Almost half were teens from the youth team, the other half largely made up of players U-22.

Not sure why you are trying to mask the fact, who are you trying to kid exactly?

What am I supposed to be wrong about exactly?

We have won 1 in 8 league games, my view is that this isn’t good enough. We lost to a Brighton reserve team, my view is we selected that team needlessly when we could have given ourselves the best chance for progression.

It’s hilarious that you recognise that in a few weeks you may come round to the idea that I am correct, yet still willing to make such childlike quips in my direction for those same views you admit that you may well be aligning yourself with sometime soon.

What do you mean “if everyone acted like Dr P”? I haven’t advocated sacking anyone have I? Or are you making things up again now?

“Acting like Dr P” means evaluating and assessing appropriately, in accordance to events as they happen…. not evaluating things as I wish them to be or become.

The Brighton team included the following (of the 14 involved)

4 very experienced players. (28%)
4 young internationals all with PL experience (28%)
5 teenagers (35%)
1 exceptional player top international quality (7%)

63% of the player had significant PL experience.

Swansea have not beaten a premier league team away in a cup game for around 40 years. (from outside the PL) . Had the striker had their shooting boots n it could have happened. Cullen badly needs to go on loan. He could end up the new Jazz Richards.

… and 0% starting players.

40 years?

- We won 3-0 vs Sheff Utd at Brammall Lane in 2007

- We won 2-0 vs Portsmouth at Portman Road in 2009.

Where do you get this rubbish from? Seriously.

We pretty much played our strongest side each time. Funny that.

Good spot Dr P. One tends to forget Sheff Utd and Pompey were Premier league. Both were FA cup not the League cup of course.

Characterisation of the Brighton team as a bunch of kids is fake however. Only 4 players and 1 sub were inexperienced professionals.

A cup game you said.

I think you even referred to drawing the West Ham away game when you first mentioned the false stat (which also was FA Cup, so it seems like you are changing it as you go).

So to summarise, now we are further restricted to league cup game? And we have to have been in the football league? we must have been away? and we must have been drawn to a PL team?… I think that’s far too rare and specific an occasion to show anything of note.

The Brighton team was largely a bunch of young reserve/back up players. I stand by it.

4 of the 11 were teenagers
8 of the 11 were 22 or under.

2 starts between all 11 this season.

Again if you want to skew it by counting the two more experienced subs that came on (along with another inexperienced teen) when we were already 2-0 down then be my guest. You will only be kidding yourself at the end of the day.
