For balance, does the 36% include those who were too ill to be vaccinated and who are far more likely to require beds anyway?
The narrative that the unvaccinated are causing undue problems for the NHS feels naive and convenient for the government, and avoids tackling structural issues. I’m not arguing with your point though that to date the vaccines generally lower an individual’s risk from Covid. | | | |

I suspect it’s more a case of the vaccinated don’t quite need the full ICU care package as interventions such as CPAP are effective enough or ICU isn’t appropriate.
A large number of the vaccinated people in hospital are older, or people who have serious underlying health conditions, COPD, cancer etc and there are others who have conditions such as diabetes. Following clinical reviews some of these patients will be placed on an end of life care pathway because Covid and their underlying condition renders them to ill to treat - Covid is bringing about early deaths in some of these individuals.
With regards to the unvaccinated patients the profile is completely different, they are much younger including 20s and 30’s and often don’t have underlying conditions, of those who do have a health issue it could be something like diabetes which is under control and diet regulated. Unfortunately for your argument you have to be able to define vaccinated . Vaccinated means not just having your 1st & 2nd jab but booster(s) as well . You wont be able to travel anywhere without the full set and you will be categorised unvaccinnated .
American hospitals are most probably using the same criteria which means people have been jabbed who get put into the unvaccinated category. "Received one dose, ≥21 days before specimen date"
and
"Second dose ≥14 days before specimen date"
Within those periods they get downrated, although it is not clear whether the Second dose reverts to a single dose or unvaxxed.
