| Swansea City v Coventry City : Match day thread on 20:21 - Mar 21 by Whiterockin | I will be surprised if Galbraith is still here next season, my only hope is the Vipotnik sale is big enough to turn down Galbraith offers. I think we will have offers for both full backs so our defence will need a complete rebuild if they go, Lissah coming back will be a massive help. We can't just rebuild every summer, last year just didn't work, will we finish higher this season than last? |
If they're dropping £30m+ on the stadium then perhaps there will be no sales at all. Not entirely sure we'll get offers big enough to tempt us to part with either but it's possible.

Unfortunately- the real elephant in the room is that the back 4 whos main job it is , is to defend- cant and that's why possibly Matos is sacrificing Ronald to to try and shore things up at the back. If you were a data analyst and was looking at data (offensive stats) to justify Ronald and Eom starting more games than not- you would be struggling

No.....Ward does have a defenders attitude - they are not getting past me. His distribution is not great but he's aggressive when defending.

| Swansea City v Coventry City : Match day thread on 19:52 - Mar 21 by Whiterockin | A serious question here Keith. 8 of our starting 11 were here last season, it may well have been 9 if Key was fit. Don't you think that with all the players we have brought in and as we are nearly at the end of the season the starting 11 should have improved by now or has it been poor recruitment. The old chestnut of players needing time to adjust has worn thin by now. |
That's a good point. And to build on that, for all Matos's huge turnaround, which cannot be underestimated, if you look at where we are now and need to be to match a Coventry, Midds, Ipswich, Southampton next season if the owners are serious about Prem ambitions, then Matos, not knowing his best starting 11 after more than 3 months is a big concern of mine. Not correcting obvious frailties and ill start with basic defending and working on how easy the opposition find it to get multiple crosses into our box from out wide game after game. And this is the really scary bit, walking back to the car after the game with my mate, we asked each other , how many of the current team would get into a promotion winning team if that was the objective for next season, and we both named 2 poss 3- Vip , Gally and Vig. Given that the first 2 may leave in the summer that is a big ask with such a massive re-build required.

Spot on. Coventry have built their team basically with the Gyorkeres money, by buying Championship ready players not buying potential and hope as we have done recently. Vipotnik should give us our Gyorkeres moment, but can the recruitment team be trusted to invest it wisely, this season makes me seriously doubt it.

He is starting to become a problem for the opposition, should have tried a first time shot when they lost the ball to us and maybe took the wrong option while driving into the Coventry defence, he is no winger but his wing play is coming along nicely and he general play is coming along nicely.

Yes I can. At 36 he’s not got enough in the tank to get through 90 minutes. Only a few few years ago he was a very good Premier League defender but his fitness and energy or lack of it won’t now allow him to get up and down the pitch quickly which is a requirement for a modern day full back. It happened with Angel Rangel at the end of his career which meant he was half the player that he had been.

Shame that we managed to hit the bar and then the cross bar, on anther day etc

I always think it's worth making sure the ref knows you don't think it's a penalty if it's debatable, do enough to sow some doubt.

Cabango is no Captain. To be honest we've had nobody who you could point at as an obvious leader of the team since Andre Ayew was here, and even then they gave the armband to a nonentity like Grimes.

| Swansea City v Coventry City : Match day thread on 22:17 - Mar 21 with 2259 views | wwcigne | Coventry played with more energy and desire than us always playing forward ,at times it looked like they had more players than us ,they always had more space and time around the pitch than us and took the chances we gave them and they created themselves well In comparison we were slow and predictable ,yes we had a couple of chances that would have made it more interesting if we’d taken them and we had plenty of ball but once again it was mainly sideways and back eating up time and amounting to nothing Coventry always looked they were capable of scoring more if they had too but being 3nil up half time didn’t really need to and just saw the game out We need a better defence and better wingers if we are to compete at the top of this division and more importantly we need to get the ball forward quicker and play with more attacking purpose and desire and stop the aimless, boring and slow sideways and back crap and the tedious ‘to me ,to you’ goal kick routine we use | | | |

I was listening to radio 5 going to the game . Stephen Warnock was on about the present Liverpool side. He made a valid point that in general , in football you need your best players close to the opposition goal where they can do the most damage . Iam beginning to wonder why he persists with Galbraith at full back its akin to playing Rees Zamit at fullback instead of wing in the Wales rugby team where hes 40 yards further back from the try line.

He was the only player in the starting 11 I thought had a good game. Having said that I thought Cullen was excellent when he came on. I did down and back in a day for that game. After 70 mins I was questioning my life choices 😩 [Post edited 22 Mar 6:41]

The trouble with that statement about championship ready players is the " big " signing pre season was a premier league ready defender who for the most part has been shocking.

He was decent at Ipswich He had a good name amongst fan base He’s been ok at times but flaky and that’s because he is uncomfortable and it shows He’s uncomfortable and Cabango is just awkward and clumsy Chuck in our non existent defending at full back and there you have it I just feel for young Galbraith who’s trying to cover the mistakes of several of his teammates

Really really soft penalty that wouldn't often be given. Grimes shot evading everyone and clipping the inside of the post and a wicked deflection for the 3rd. Tymon hitting the bar with a good effort, Widdel hitting the post when should have scored, Franco with a bad miss, then Vip at the end with an equally bad miss. The result could have and should have been a lot closer. Will be very interesting next Aug to see our starting 11.

It was said by many at the start of this season, that we have the best squad than we have had for years it all looked good, but its not turned out that way unfortunately Matos has done well and is still learning and adapting, they need to put thoughts on improving the Stadium on the back burner until we've a squad that's good enough to challenge in the top 6. The Stadium developments should be secondary in my opinion of course.

How do mate, Burgess has a positional lack of awareness with balls coming into the box. By that i mean players around him. He cleared numerous crosses yesterday with little issue when the ball is available to him to do so. It’s when it isn’t that his issues begin. One clearance for a corner literally could have been an own goal again. Cabango isn’t having a good time of it this season, although that penalty was debatable as the player was on his way down before contact. I can’t see Matos changing the centre back pairing next season without some real investment. The bonus is Lissah returning.

Burgess' biggest problem is that he's basically playing alongside a twin. He and Cabango have the same strengths and weaknesses, and playing the two of them together is amplifying the latter. We've seen Cabango play better than this. Burgess obviously has or he wouldn't have come to us with the reputation that he did. Paired with someone like Harry Darling I suspect both of them would be having a better season.

Bang on Burgess is an old fashioned CH , just let him do the simple things and he’s fine his game is all about clearing Ariel balls and he’s good at it , he’s not a passing machine Cabango does have foggy moments in games and makes regular mistakes also , as you say we need a footballing centre half with defensive awareness and a good passing game ,we don’t have one so all the more reason to keep it simple and stop the faffing about at the back that exaggerate our weaknesses Also agree with the other post about our fullbacks, constantly 10-15 yards off the widemen they should be marking or even so far up the pitch not marking at all ,resulting in the opposition wingers getting the ball in loads of space and running with and either getting crosses in or winning corners that put pressure on our CH’s and hurt us ,also because our build up is so slow our widemen are always marked tight meaning we lack that attacking ability
