Dave Greenfield: The Stranglers keyboard player dies at 71 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-52537293

An extremely talented keyboard player that well and truly rubbished the myth that all punk rock musicians were somehow tuneless and untalented.

A unique/trademark swirling keyboard style along with his Golden Brown harpsichord playing will always stick in my mind. He could play two keyboards at the same time, that took some doing imo. Think Rick Wakeman used to do the two keyboard stuff also.

Argus!

Big Swans fan.

I want a mate like Flashberryjacks, who wears a Barnsley jersey with "Swans are my second team" on the back.

Played Rattus over and over again on a little cassette player all the way from Swansea to Leeds. Luckily only 3 of us in the carriage. Played abig part in my late teenage years. From Sometimes through to Down in the sewer. Then No more heroes. All made by Dave's brilliance.

RIP, and thanks.

That’s a sad one. Sometimes news like this really hits you and it’s like a chunk of your past has gone. They were great: original, talented and funny. Not their best song, but a great party one:

Absolutely gutted.,
Seems odd for me that I last saw the Stranglers in the Rebellion Festival, Winter Gardens Blackpool. My favourite band in my favourite place.
RIP Dave. Raising a glass of Malbec to you tonight.....

I remember seeing them in the Top Rank. The gig was postponed initially at very short notice because the bass player cut his finger. Everyone turned up and there was a notice on the door. No mobile phones or emails back then. Lots of unhappy people but a great night when they eventually played.

RIP

They weren’t punk, they were a pub band who jumped on the bandwagon.

Dave Greenfield was in a prog rock band before he joined The Stranglers.

They never claimed they were a punk band, neither did the jam

They had a punk attitude though

Virtually all bands start off in a pub.
It just happens the Stranglers started off whist Punk was kicking off. Their style fitted in with the mood even though they were older and by far superior musicians.
Thy did not jump on any bandwagon. If anything punk jumped on theirs.
That is my lot on this subject.
The thread is about Dave Greenfield and I don't want to spoil that.

I always assumed they were your favourite band from your avatar. During the punk era, for me at least, The Stranglers were a beacon in a sea of DIY mediocrity as they were all seasoned musicians and Greenfield typified that.

No more heroes? Maybe not in current circumstances, but definitely one less now.

May 1977 Top Rank Cardiff to Caerphilly Castle and Blackpool last Summer, sweet sweet memories. London Lady, Grip, Straighten Out, Hanging Around... Punk or not[ though it's a massive massive pogo-tastic YES from me], it doesn't alter the fact that they were a wonderful band with some great tunes. The first 3 albums still sound superb today. R.I.P.

Bit of a link to a previous thread about cover versions .
Worth listening to The Stranglers take on " Walk on By " .

Swansea Top Rank about 1980 , sure The Skids were support act that night and JJ Burnel
decided to get involved with the crowd . Great band .

The very fact you think that makes them one of the biggest punk bands of all time. and JJB would argue differently, and I think he would know...
As would Hugh Cornwell who said yesterday on the BBC.
'He was the difference between The Stranglers and every other punk band," wrote Cornwell.

As stated above RIP. Memories.

Lucky to see them 6 times over the past few years at Festivals and Gigs, still great live.

I fear the Stranglers will finish now on this !

Dave Greenfield answered the ad to join a “soft rock” band (The Stranglers). He was nearly 30, the drummer was nearly 40. “Old farts” was the term at the time.

Dig out what Tony Tyler (then editor of the NME - the punk/new wave bible) wrote about them. Or their entry in The Rough Guide To Rock.

They sussed the way the wind was blowing and cashed in. I’m not disputing what they became.
