He's been compared to Van Nistelrooy so lets hope he is the real deal, he could be a great signing, assuming all the rest of the paperwork goes through anyway.

We are still talking to other forwards too, lets hope that lesson is well and truly learned.

Now we just need to know what's happening with Cooper and if/when he goes, who our next manager is.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Hasn't been able to get regular minutes in the Eredivisie.

3 in 26 appearances. Someone must have seen something in him, just hope they are right.

The 26 games is probably misleading as he appears to have been used as a substitute, often a late one, for PSV and also appeared to be a substitute when on loan to Sparta Rotterdam.

Lack of full games at a senior level may be more of an issue.

That was my point, he’s struggled for minutes in his career so far. He was sent on loan to a lesser team and still didn’t really get guaranteed game time. That league is not a great standard so unless he’s a late developer or we have seen something someone else has missed (which is entirely possible) then I very much doubt it’s the second coming of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

As long as he can hold the ball and lead the line then that will be an improvement on the role last year. I just think it’s important we keep expectations in check, especially in a confidence position like a striker.

Maybe it’s one we think we can develop while with us and not the finished article, may explain the lack of competition for his signature elsewhere and PSV’s apparent willingness to let him go.l for not very much money.

Agree. The stats suggest that he is not the finished article, if he was we couldn’t afford him. Mind you if he gets a work permit we will have a lot of young forwards.

Yes and no. With regards to the stats showing he’s not the finished article - not necessarily, PSV and Sparta (and the teams that didn’t make a move despite being available) may well think he is the finished article, or already pretty much developed, but simply not good enough. Hence the price tag and willingness to sell.

He will be 22 by the time the season starts. The next couple of years may be make or break for him, if he is still to develop still, then it will be a late development. The Championship is a tough, tough league to cut your teeth in.

As you rightly say, we will already have a lot of young forwards which appears we think we can develop. So with this one I am surprised we went for inexperience and youth again, may sound like I’m being a bit pessimistic but the signing doesn’t make a whole lot of immediate sense to me on the face of it, especially with what I assume is a limited warchest.

But maybe I’m missing something.

Stats, stats, stats, shove them where the shine don't shine, I hear enough about stats mon to fri in work. stats don't get football games won or the work done, its just a job for people that can't play football or do the job and the galling thing is they usually earn more.
Useless parasites that undermine people who actually put in the hard yrds.

Your breed are dying out. Football clubs that ignore the value of statistical analysis fall behind.

You may need to tell that to every single football club that use them daily then, and put such an importance on them that they even add trackers into their jerseys so the analytical teams can keep track of all physical and technical stats.

Not everyone understands them or their importance, usually fans in a non analytical work place, so are often met with responses such as this. But to underestimate the importance of stats within football is as foolish as it is naive.

Nobody is saying stats win football matches or gets work done, that isn’t what stats do. Stats can (and often do) show how much work is getting done, the quality of that work, why games aren’t getting won and weaknesses within individuals or an organisation.

The issue some have with stats is they often reveal uncomfortable truths or show some alternative facts to sway the narrative to be utter nonsense. It cuts through nonsense immediately, which is why they won’t be going anywhere soon in football.

Not many people had looked at Rangel until we spotted him, Michu hadn't exactly been a household name. Sometimes these signing pay off handsomely, sometimes they don't. Jamie Vardy didn't break through til he was 27!

Michu scored 15 in 37 in La Liga the season before we signed him. Finished in the top 10 scorers list, presented a low risk signing in the Premier League.

Rangel was an ever present for Terrassa in the Spanish Segunda B. Martinez knew of him before hand, I'm sure his stats were also very good scoring 7 from RB, he seemed to play most games in that league for the clubs he played for. We paid 2.5k for him with Rangel paying the rest himself. Very low risk signing.

But yes, some do develop late and that is what we must hope for here. But even Vardy showed he could score before his move, 16 goals in that Championship season, 31 in 36 for Fleetwood before that and 26 in 37 for Halifax before that.

Martinez never knew of Rangel before he signed, Reeves and Martinez went out to Spain to watch a centre forward and were so impressed with the opposition right back that they took a gamble..... The Angel Rangel story began!
