It’s a poor call that travel wasn’t stopped. If the India variant is unaffected by the existing vaccines and is more contagious that other strains, we are going to be back to square 1 unless it’s contained sharpish.
New Zealand and Oz contained it, I appreciate we have a different geographical position, but there is no reason we couldn’t have had significantly tighter travel restrictions.
Edit - BBC reporting concerns mounting about the transmissibility of the Indian version and SAGE reporting “there is a “realistic possibility” it could spread 50% faster” than the Kent variety which in turn was more transmissible than the initial strain. The opening up in June is now under threat.

I think the Indian variant will be prevented to a good extent by the vaccine. Severe illness should be a very rare occurrence. Its how fast it is going to spread is the problem.
It's not as vaccine resistant as the South African variant and most vaccines prevent about 50% of symptomatic cases of that variant, we should be OK. Perhaps just back a few steps rather than back to square 1.

There was a map on the BBC website yesterday that showed a clear correlation between low rates of vaccination and the Indian variant outbreaks.
Anyone who turns the vaccine down, especially vulnerable and in the NW of England is looking for trouble.

4 deaths is entirely predictable given that COG were pulling out about 1% of cases being one of the Indian variants (there are three variants of the main variant group) by mid-April. So 10-20 cases per day five weeks ago with doubling of variants roughly every week. Reading back a Twitter thread by Christina Pagel, we should have had India on the red list sooner and been prepared for surge testing sooner. This is only now happening in Sefton and Bedford which have the highest level of cases after Bolton & Blackburn.
Given these data would have been known to government this looks a decision made on political expediency rather than science. That said the strains were already here, so hard to tell if would have worked but should have been done. As we are now over 1300
Cases with increases likely and a strong chance this becomes the predominant variant over the Kent variant it is likely to cause more deaths and illness in the coming months. It is at least transmissible as the Kent variant-the suggestion it is more transmissible is based on Bolton which may yet be a blip or outlier. No evidence of increased virulence, nor any high degree of vaccine evasion. It’s not resistance- that’s a different thing. I would certainly consider rolling back on some of the lockdown easing- politically and economically there is no way back from Monday’s easing ,
But mask wearing in schools, continuing of social distancing and seriously considering a delay to restrictions ending on June 21st in England for a few weeks -

None of those take into account vaccination fully- it’s too complex to model as subtleties in variation of resistance and susceptibility are nigh on impossible to model. Jon Read (Lancaster on SPI M) used to be at Liverpool. We discussed this over avian influenza models as models fall down poorly over this (as it is so difficult to quantify). All mathematical models need a figure. This is difficult to quantify- immunology is not a good bedfellow for modellers. We did some work on predictive modelling of immunity to bacterial infections and this needed a huge amount of experimentation to feed the model. Cost us 25k in cytokine assays alone. Easing will lead to more cases and deaths (don’t need to model that), but the amount is sticking a finger in the air at the moment | | | |
