Glamorgan ditch St Helens 12:51 - Jan 21 with 2956 viewsBrynmill_Jack

Sad news but in all reality this has been coming since the powers that be in Cardiff wanted a token Sri Lanka test match every few years to grant it test match status.

I feel very sorry for the balconiers who worked so hard to keep at least one or two first class matches at St Helens - it’s a bit of a betrayal but in truth this was always going to happen.

It’s nothing to do with us anymore- I wish nothing but misfortune of the committee.

I can't stand Cricket.

On a different tack, if St Helens is only used for the Whites then they don't need half the space they have now, maybe the council should move the rugby to a smaller, purpose built stadium and sell the prime seafront land?

I looked and the Whites are only getting 6-700. All they need is a 1500-2000 stadium. Though St Helens only holds 4500 now anyway.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Amongst the most depressing things I have read.
Until the early 1950s ,45000 attended to watch Wales international. So much rugby and cricket history of a great sporting city, trashed by neglect and incompetence and yes that is a slagging off-a slagging off of everyone who didnt give a fark .

Their excuse is laughable. They claim that St Helens no longer has the facilities to host domestic cricket. They then announce the the Gnoll will host two matches.

The Gnoll has far smaller dressing rooms, a far smaller bar area, no corporate hospitality suits, no on ground catering facilities. Just make you wonder who is running Cardiff Cricket Club.

No doubt they will still be happy to take the annual £30,000 donation from the Balconiers which must amount to over £1 million for the last 40 years.

I for one will not be renewing my membership this year after 56 years of membership.

The facilities they have in Cardiff are far superior to anything that Swansea can offer and if it was a case of moving lock stock and barrel to Sophia Gardens I could understand, but to axe St Helen’s and then take games to the Gnoll is in my view madness and poor show.

Will always be remembered for the classic 6 sixes in an over by sir Gary Sobers . A sad day for all concerned with cricket in Swansea.

I know a few on the committee at Newport CC they where saying last season that Swansea CC just wasn't keeping up with the maintenance at St Helens where as Newport has worked tirelessly since moving from Rodney parade to build up to a first class ground they got local businesses on board

Great innnings I remember at St. Helens. Clive Lloyd blasting 201 off 120 balls and a sublime 144 from Greg Chappell.
But it's okay the Welsh Government will step in.

If St Helens had 9.5 million spent on it along with support Glamorgan received from the WAG ( no surprise there ) I'm sure St Helens wouldn't be in the position it finds itself today.

Well they invested all their money there just for Cardiff to call itself a centre of Test Cricket. It’s no surprise St Helens has fallen behind! Like I say a deliberate move to disenfranchise Swansea cricket fans. They want to play faves over in Pembrokeshire , Coley Bay and Newport. Glamorgan my @rse.

Jeez I didn’t know that. Does St Helens have a case for restraint of trade? Surely that is unfair competition. There are rules in football for that sort of thing.

Oh well, just all the more reason to resist any Indy referendum sh*t. A plague on all of them

I said a good few years ago on the previous incarnation of this site that the WA and Cardiff CC wanted to marginalise St Helens and would end up closing. I had pelters for my rationalising that we should stop supporting Glamorgan because of what I thought might happen. Shocking that is is so transparent what has happened and they have sacrificed a wonderful Cricket venue to make that Shtole the B all and end all.

I have taken no interest since the sell out to Cardiff for an ‘England’ international now and again.

I wish them no luck at all.

It makes you wonder if any Welsh business outside of Cardiff have a case for restraint of trade.

Never mind Welsh people will continue to vote for WL.

The irony if this was successful and glammy started struggling would be the most delicious of all. I’ve no got another plan for when my 130,000,000 lottery win comes in. Swans and Wales Cricket at a massively revamped St Helen’s !

St Helens was always a more iconic cricket ground for Glamorgan.

It evokes more memories for Welsh cricket followers than Cardiff, for sure.

Last time,I was home,I had to stop the car as it upset me that much. My overbiding memory was seeing the touring Australian rugby team limbering up on the Prom by the Cenotaph .Late 60s I think. Also the infamous battle of St Helens Springbok tour

I was a regular down St. Helens until Glamorgan were moved to sophia gardens have only seen one match live since. Their loss let them play in front of one man and his dog in the capital swansea was a major area of support

We havent mentioned the iconic features of t Helens either;the pavilion steps alone. The Sea End when the tide was coming in, the games we played at break by the Rugby scoreboard. All memories etched forever for many

Same with me, I told this board years ago that I can't support Glammy like I used to after the way they have treated St Helens and West Wales cricket .

Continually being banned by Planet Swans for Porthcawl and then being reinstated.

Lets hope the swans get a new billionaire owner who builds a new 40,000 stadium in the st Helens site and gives the liberty to the ospreys , failing that the council will either sell it off to a developer or develop it themselves
