After 34 games 22:51 - Mar 9 with 8300 viewssimmo

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/championship/formtabelle/wettbewerb/GB2?saison_i

19/20: 34 games, 12 wins, 7 draws, 15 losses, -7 GD, 43pts & 15th
20/21: 34 games, 12 wins, 10 draws, 12 losses, -4 GD, 46pts & 12th

If you just took Eze out of this team you'd say that being in a similar position would be very good going. But Eze plus Bright, Manning, Wells, Hugill (and to a degree) Leistner & Rangel... That's some effort, even in a slightly worse league.

I was very critical of our January window, especially with how slow we were to address key positions, but to a man every addition has hit the ground running and adding them to Dickie and Dieng along with a change of formation has transformed this team and made us all but safe by March. Excellent work.

Yeah really outstanding achievement from Warburton, the recruitment team, players and everyone at the club. Particularly impressed at how we have tightened up what was a very leaky defence.

Great post .....
Add to this the way the youngsters are developing, there's a lot of positives right now.

Great post Simmo and without a doubt our January business has turned our season around. I suppose in terms of entertainment, last season was better, with goals flying in a both ends. Not too many 'ugly' 1-0 wins last season, but with that many goals lost to the team, we had to tighten up and we have. And with the players you mentioned that we lost, you didn't mention Hall, who had a decent season despite all we let in and contributed a few goals too.
My only caveat is that none of our January business are ours. Okay we are likely to sign Field and G Wizz, but we still will have to do some very astute business in the summer to keep moving in the right direction.

Annually or what seems like annually at this time of the year I'm normally looking down the table and thinking the worse, I can't help that-that's how it's been me being a worry guts.
Not tonight though, no need anymore I'm delighted to say.
At the time of the January transfer I was in a 'meh' mood regarding our signings (Charlie apart) no point in naming names or waxing lyrical about the players we brought in those players are doing it for me on the pitch, I'm chuffed to bits with our squad as it currently is.
One thing I will mention though is our defense, it wasn't that long ago that when the opposition players were attacking our goal I used to cover my eyes and go "oh no" seems to me them day's are over too. I'm a firm believer in sorting your defense out first and as far as I'm concerned that's now happened.

Bit too much waffle.

Well-well pleased tonight.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Is this a better team now? It's starting to feel like it. We're certainly more balanced.

Willock has the potential to be at least as good as Bright, if not better.

Austin is at least as good as Wells or Hugill, arguably better.

Dickie is better than any defender we had last year.

Dieng is a better keeper.

Add your own - there are more.

Agree with Ted it’s the defence that has done it for us this year. Dickie and Dieng are now consistently excellent and Barbets coming good.

The attack did it last year.

This year’s defence plus last year’s attack is a promotion team, and given time I’d back Warbuton to put that together eventually. Patience lads.

Yes also don't forget good signings improve the players around them.

Not the players they replace.

It’s shaping up to be a great season. Looking back at the posts when quite a lot of people wanted Warbs out, just goes to show the state of modern football where fans want instant fixes. . Managers need time.

This is the most positive I’ve felt in a decade, including the Zamora season.

i didn't really understand the criticism of the January window at the time, i get we wanted things done quickly but it was more important to get the right players and they have done that. Preston went off and got players in quickly and are now below us. For me a transfer window can never be judged fairly until the next one starts as you'll have seen the players for 15/20 games and have a good idea on if they were any good or not. So far it's been very good

We used to have a bloke called Osayi Samuel play for us but he couldn’t be ar5ed and moved on . Wonder what became of him ?

They've been average since hes signed. Nice weather out there though Bright 🤣

Willock is better and cost the same amount that we got for BOS. Job done.
Dieng has been a revelation this season as has Dickie. Barbet has been brilliant since the move to back 3 and DeWijs looks a monster. Field hot the ground running, could be anything.

P12-W8-D2-L2 since out january additions came in, that's title winning form.
........ now if we can only tie down Johansen and Austin....

Great post Simmo.

The other thing is we're starting to be a club that younger players want to come to. I don't think Willock, Field or Dickie would have come to us if it weren't for Chair, Eze and Bright and what we've done for their careers. That and Warburton who seems to have the knack as to how to bring players on and what they need to develop.

We're even getting it right with the loan players we're bringing in. Just what we needed in January. Most teams have a couple of loans, and they've made so much difference.

We're doing really well and should be proud of the club. We're doing things the right way and it's starting to pay off.

Looking much better, MW is a good manager, pleased he has got it going and the signings in January have certainly helped. Keep the faith, things are looking up and if the current form continues, we could finish with our highest points total since coming back down to the Championship in 2015.

As I’ve said all along we made a complete balls up of the summer transfer market (Dickie aside) and ended up spending the perceived savings on the loan signings we needed back in the summer in January instead.

I was amazed anyone questioned bringing in seasoned performers such as Charlie and Johansen, players who’ve transformed the team and many of the players around them.

As for those shouting for Warburton head at the time, do you think Les and Hoos would have made such a public display after the Swansea game as they did if the natives hadn’t been so restless? What’s clear is they collectively knew they’d fcked up the first half of a very poor Championship.

Anyway, even if those errors cost us a shot at the play offs, they seem to have learned a lesson and for that I praise what they’ve corrected.

Will they follow this through into 21/22, you’d hope so but well have to see.

to add to the op, we also lost Hall, who I thought we initially missed quite a bit and added 6 goals (or similar) last season.

A good job, well done.

Interesting read from the OP. ....are you Norf in disguise??

We have a very 'rounded' squad of players......MW and his team have been the key to that. This squad of players should improve. We should achieve a top 10 place in the Championship which I have thought for several months even when we were loosing often. Depending on the next 4 games we could be pressing for a play-off position.....don't think we will because we are still rather inconsistent but football is a funny old game!!

Last 4 performances have been sooooo different, Preston - good battling performance, B'ham - poor all round but should have taken all 3 points, Bristol - won't get much better, best we played all season, Wycombe - average against an average team but worth 3 points).

Actually (only) 6th in the form table for the last 10. I was quite surprised but I guess Cardiff, Naaarch, Watford, Barnsley and Swansea are all on runs too. 7 runs on the trot for Norwich & Barnesley (!).

We're ahead of Sparta Hounslow, though. Who have Barnsley away next.

Was the summer window really a balls up?

Carrol, Wilock and Dickie all look good signings. Amos was doing Ok before the injury
Getting Deing on a long term deal looks good business now.
Adomah has been hit and miss so far but not a terrible signing by any means.
Bonne and Dykes were gambles which haven't really worked but wouldn't write them off yet, neither were massive money either. They did try for Moore and Hugil but were unable to get them.
Kellman was one of the development squad so hard to judge yet
George Thomas was a free transfer to fill the squad out, again one who might come good but no big loss if not.

it could have been better but it's a long way from a balls up. The likes of Austin, Johansen and Field were not available back in October.

As for the public display they were stood there having a conversation, you could read it several different ways but they didn't sack him after that game so perhaps we read a bit too much into it.

At the halfway stage we had 24 points compared to gaining 22 from the nest 11 games.

Good job it is this way round, or message boards would be in meltdown over a decline!

Agreed, KensalRiser, except the reference to Charlie as 'arguably better'. There is surely no argument. He is better.
