Kicks off next month with the news that Cummins is likely out of the first test and possibly most/all of the series. That helps.

And now Smith doing what he does best... Cheating and S**thousery (yes I know its not cheating really) but total lack of gamesmanship

might prove to be a mistake, if they had gone for the wicket England out for around 260-270 instead gonna be over 300

50 partnership and Archer has score more - Who would have believed that

But yes Dave agree... May bite them later

Did Smith used to play for Preston?

Shithousery in cricket. Great.

Suffering since 1978.

Pretty sure there is no one on this page that at 5-2 wouldnt be happy with with 322 runs on the board. An above average first innings score at the Gabba too

yeah they have done well, feels like the Aussies have let us off the hook here.

Think that day ended pretty even... 325...9 wickets... perhaps slightly in the Aus favour

Archer came out and done what a number 11 should do... throw the wood at it, but perhaps that is a bit underdoing the knock as he played some lovely shots. I think that is the best 10th wicket England partnership at the Gabba.... ever

But oh dear there was some poor shots there Brooks, Crawley, Smith, and Jack's... and a melt down from Stokes

But Root wash imperial... what a talent? I have been lucky enough to see some of the greats bat Tendulkar, Richards, Lara, Ponting etc ... but he must be the best English batter I have ever seen

Hopefully get another6 overs in tomorrow for a little moral victory, and perhaps hit 350... to at least make a fist of it

Yes. I think Sandpaper Boy got his tactics wrong at the end.

He (and the Aussie commentators on 7) seemed to be overly concerned by perhaps facing a couple of overs where they were at worst going to lose a couple of wickets.

Had they kept focussed rather than concentrating on time-wasting they might have knocked us over for well less than 300.

For perfect illustrations of gifting one's wicket away, may I suggest that we look at some of Brook's recent exhibits. Today's being another case in point. Way worse than Crawley's.

Watching Brook's bat has me wondering whether all is well. He's batting so erratically and could have got himself out on a few other occasions prior to his actual dismissal in today's innings, by playing in such a carefree manner.

He's a much better player than the one that's currently on show.

Agree about the weak Aussie bowling line-up.

Brook is a great athlete, but sadly not a great thinker.

Will have to see how the Aussies bat but this looks a good score to me for England, I'd put us slightly ahead at the moment

We'd be fkd without Root.

A lot of our players seem to have been brainwashed into thinking Tests can't last four or five days. Hardly any of them grasp the concept of time in the middle. I mean Jacks looked to be getting in, thrashed at a wide one and missed. Followed up by exactly the same ball, same shot, edged to slip. Just so dumb.

Anyway some good wagging at the end from Archer, somehow England have batted a full day.

Brilliant from Root, just what England needed on a day when 7 batsmen scored less than 20 including 4 ducks. Need to get smith and head out cheaply now.

Turned out alright in the end. As said, impressive to get to the score we did with so many not troubling the scoreboard but when Stokes and Root were batting, trouble free, it feels we missed a trick.

Would love for Archer and Root to hang around for 30/40 mins tomorrow. Wouldn't actually get them to throw the bat at it, just soak up time, maybe do a bit of the Smith timewasting antics. With a 10 min changeover between innings, wasting 30 mins plus in the morning if we can, would mean we'd get even longer under the lights to bowl at them. Plus late order hitting annoys all batsmen.

I know it's only day one but this match feels like it could go down to the wire! Props to Joffra and Sir Joe for the last few overs. That was epic! Seeing Starc get the treatment when he thought it was a done deal gave me a warm feeling. Might just be heartburn but I'll take it.

4 wickets thrown away Brook Smith Jacks and Stokes v a 2 and half man bowling attack. Only 74 overs bowled if I had my way 10 runs per over short would have England at 480 and would change the way Test matches are played oh and force teams to pick a spinner game in balance thanks to the best English batsman of my lifetime

I used to think like that too,but it’s too easy to only blame the bowling team.Sometimes the side batting hold up play just as much.A classic example was England’s antics against India last summer.
But the umpires should ensure there is as much play as possible.

Looked like Starc had a sore right knee to me. Despite taking 6 didn’t look so good at the end.

We are just about coping with the loss of Broad and Anderson, especially with the return to the test team of Jofra Archer, who i think is a class apart as a bowler for England.

However, when the day comes that Joe hangs up his bat and gloves for the last time, where is the long term quality successor in the batting ranks

Duckett is currently our second most consistent batter, but beyond him.

Crawley, Pope, Brook, Smith, Jacks, Stokes of the current vintage all have class, but all play the idiotic shot once too often.

Root 66 needs to keep playing until he hits 50 and am talking years on the planet, otherwise wgo takes up the mantle !!!!

Based on the first ten overs today, I would guess that we were at least 100 under par unless Stokes is going to find another miracle spell from somewhere.

Some of the bowling has been shocking to these two openers and the dropped catch was rank. Wasted the new ball.

Feels like a 400 odd pitch doesn't it? Such a lack of situational awareness, as per - stop us leaking boundaries, keep things tight, and put yourself in a good position to get stuck into them in the trickier second session.

Ashes thread on 06:21 - Dec 5 with 161 viewsMalintabuk

Hmmm.... 400 wicket, could be closer to 500.... just reading the stats in 21 overs of bowling there would be just 4 balls that would have hit the stumps...

Can understand why we all support England... they are the cricketing version of QPR... you never know what you are going to get

Again the Aussies have out Baz balled us... scoring at over 6 runs an over.... and done it playing proper cricket....

Hopefully twilight and perhaps a good spell from someone can get us back in this... but if Aussie bat until tomorrow we could be looking at an innings defeat here
