"I know quite a few dog owners who put dogs on a pedestal"

The worst example of this is people who refer to dog owners as "Daddy" or "Mommy". It's creepy.

Daddy? He's not my son. I didn't sire him. I didn't have sex with a dog.*

*Stop it!

Maybe we can also find a way to shoehorn blame into mainstream media for dogs not being kept under control.

The amount of times you'd hear the phrase "Where are you.." in relation to this mutt...

We have a dog, not my choice but the good lady did so we got one.

My only input into the whole decision was that it could only be of a size that we (I) could easily get the better of it it 'turned'.

I would say that our dog is well behaved but i am under no illusion that any dog could quite easily hurt any child/toddler if it turned.

Poll: Wherever QPR end up playing home games in the future, what is most important?

Certain dogs are owned by certain people for certain reasons. This particular type of dog has been purposely bred to be huge, powerful and to look like it does, essentially to be used as a status symbol and a weapon. In the hands of idiots, this is only going to end one way.

I know a few Bully XLs through walking my dog and from the ones I've met I'd say they're a genuinely beautiful breed. The problem is certainly the owners - either the absolute pr!cks that wasn't weapon dogs as a status symbol (presumably because they're pussies themselves) or those that aren't able to train and control the animal.

If I'm correct I think there are only 3 breeds that're banned in the UK. Or maybe not banned any more, but ones that are heavily regulated ie the animal needs to be tattooed, registered, microchipped the lot

QPR - "shit but local"

Culturally the UK is a nation of dog lovers but IMHO that love sometimes drifts into unhealthy, unwavering devotion. I know quite a few dog owners who put dogs on a pedestal and genuinely believe that in the natural order of things dogs take priority over humans, particularly children. That should never be the case and regulation should be clearer to help dog owners understand their responsibilities towards not only the dog but also fellow human beings. If that means keeping them on a leash, using a muzzle, taking them to dog parks, picking up their mess, or simply crossing the road, then so be it.

seeing as my dog is my avatar I'm probably one of the borderline mental dog owners

but I think I'm pretty switched on as an owner and don't let him away with taking liberties

I'm also mindful that other people might actually be afraid wary of dogs; luckily I live out in the sticks with a lot of space to exercise where you are only likely to see other mental dog owners

I'm told by a vet that I worked with closely that they HATE it when people refer to their did as their "fur babies"

We went to an open day at the Dogs Trust in Harefield. Some muppet couple dressed their Staffy as a feckin ballerina, complete with a spangled tutu and those boingy things on its head. I almost called social services.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

This man has now died. Can we now agree to ban such dogs and imprison owners ?

Looks like that dog breed is being banned although not confirmed that it was involved in this attack.

I think owners can go to court to apply for an exemption if they feel the dog is not a danger to the public or other dogs. The dog will be placed on an exemption index.

If placed on the index, the dog must be:

neutered
microchipped
kept on a lead and muzzled at all times when in public
kept in a secure place so it cannot escape
You must also take out insurance against your dog injuring other people and must show your Certificate of Exemption when asked by a police officer or council dog warden, either at the time or within five days.

They will be sent to Rwanda on barges.

How anyone can take Sunaq seriously is a fcking mystery to me. Opportunism and sticky plaster politics may change the news cycle for a day or two but this is a complex issue and an unworkable ban won’t solve it. I feel for all the Am Bully owners plus the tens of thousands who own similar looking dogs who will also get wrapped up in this. Hearing this news will be fcking terrifying. Hell, if my dog didn’t have droopy mastiff jowls, I’d be worried too. Fortunately for me a lot of Bullmastiffs are owned by the middle and upper class, so they’d never consider banning them.

Yeah I do understand it must be worrying if you're dog is no trouble at all, then this announcement makes you wonder what's going to happen - it won't be nice for them. But from what I understand this dog breed has killed more people than any other in the UK this year - since this thread was started a man has been killed (according to Police) by two out of control ones.

Something has to be done.

Something has to be done to lower the numbers of dangerous dogs but a ban on Am Bullies isn’t the answer and Sunak knows it. Unless of course he hasn’t spoken to or read the evidence from the Police, RSPCA, dog behavioural experts, vets, scientists etc. In which case you have to ask how is he qualified to make the decision?
This proposed ban is pure politics and will not solve the issue of dangerous dogs. We already have the legislation in place if he really wanted to tackle it. However the funding and manpower necessary is nonexistent and that won’t change even if he does manage to ban them. Still at least we’re not talking about record NHS waiting lists or school classroom’s caving in.

Right about the (lack of) manpower.
On a tangent, a mate tells me his local Co op is closing in the face of out of control shop lifting and no help from police.
The manager says it's more like looting than shop lifting.

That poor kid in Wales, what a horrific way to go and really feel for his family.

I don't like to judge a book by it's cover but I will... this morning while going to work there was this lady in de riguer grey jogging bottoms and trackky top. She looked absolutely thick as pig schit. Doubt she can look after herself let alone being responsible for training a dog properly.
Had a really muscly dog on a lead and could barely hold the thing. Clearly a status symbol.

Interesting thing happened today. About a month ago a guy working for a private pest control company was about to get into his van when the dog from one of our neighbours (a pit-bull looking beast they keep to 'guard' their house that went ballistic every time I walked my dog past their house) escaped from their front door and bit him on the leg. The neighbour simply said sorry to the poor chap and carried on with his day as if nothing had happened. My Mrs witnessed the whole thing and went over to check on the guy to make sure he was ok, luckily he wasn't too badly hurt and he reported the incident. She also reported it as that could've easily been someone's kid but nothing happened straight away - a follow up phone call but nothing concrete...
Low and behold, today she gets a call saying the police will be investigating this as a priority. Coincidence? I think not with today's events.

Why does it take a tragedy for something to be done about these dangerous dog owners? Yes, some breeds are susceptible to be more aggressive and problematic than others, but ultimately the problems lies with the ease with which people can procure and breed these dogs and then not properly train or socialise them.

This “breed” hasn’t actually been recognised as a breed. Looks very like a Boxer. How and who will decide which is which ? Not Rishi Sunak I hope. I’m sure The Sun and others will be whipping up a frenzy meanwhile if you own a largish Boxer you’d better stay indoors for a while.

Strong and stable my arse.

This. I would fully support a mass cull of anyone found wandering around town centres and housing estates in grey jogging bottoms.

They're clearly cnts, and no one would miss them

Only if they don’t follow the strict conditions or end up in a rescue centre. There is no scientific way of proving the breed so rescue centres will err on the side of caution and kill not only XL’s but thousands of healthy friendly innocent dogs that just happen to look similar to Am Bullies.

The ramifications of a breed ban are truly hideous. Meanwhile the scrotes will have moved on to another breed and the incidents will continue.
