Should we sign RND on a permanent in January if it’s an option or wait til the end of the season and see what’s available? He’s an upgrade on Paal but is he anything more than a solid defender? I’d be reasonably happy to sign him but can’t shift that nagging doubt that we should be looking to sign someone better.

Don't we have RB sorted? We've RND for this season, plus Field as an option. Larkeche, should he ever regain fitness, and Esquerdinha for the future. Seems to me there are a lot of positions we could better spend our money on, like a 'keeper who's fit, competent, and under pensionable age.

Ideally yes given the other options we have but as mentioned his wages will probably be prohibitive.

But then I have no idea any more what we can and can't afford.

I think the bar is so low at our club for fullbacks, that even a 7/10 steady Eddy looks like Roberto Carlos at the moment.

IF he wants a similar contract to his Sheff Utd one, then its a no for me. There are going to be better options out there, although I do think he has done an OK job when he has played.

I imagine there is something fishy about the number of apps he has been limited to in his loan deal, as it made no sense to rest him then not use him

You've addressed the LB situation perfectly. RND is in as cover because Larkeche, who was going to be 1st choice, blew his ACL. Esquerdinha clearly has the talent, but is still raw. There's no reason why the combination of Larkeche and Esquerdinha can't be resurrected. RND is steady but he is a 6/10 regular. Remember Jake Bidwell?
The keeper situation needs to be resolved, ASAP. Walsh was going to be no 1 and may still come good. The 2 results where he conceded 6 and 7 were, IMHO, freak results. Little Walsh could have done. Nardi is a good shot stopper but a nightmare on crosses. That affects the rest of the defense. Besides which, the club have made clear he stays on sufferance. Hamer, hasn't done badly but is at the end of his career.
If we're recruiting in January, I struggle to see where we find any improvement over what we already have.

January = MORE BLOOD

After Norwich I'm pretty sure we'll try for another striker who is better than Frey (can't be too difficult...in theory).
LB - either extend RND loan, or sign him; or we sign/loan someone else.
RB - sign/loan back up for Mbengue and Dunne
Midfield - hopefully a Field Mk II who's better on the ball

Strikers are expensive and we have to try Kolli, who can score goals. We might need to try and loan one though, if Kone and Kolli go to AFCON.

We either keep RND until the summer or bring in a left back.

Go for Edwards. He's a better footballer than anyone of our defence, can play cb, rb or dm, likes the club, fans like him, club likes him. Cooke's contract runs out this summer which will, if rumours are true, be a big help to the budget.

And add a third centre back to those already sitting on the bench/not able to make the match day squad? I’ve seen loads of SM accounts saying we need Edwards, a CM and a RB or even another striker in January. Personally I don’t think we should sign anyone. This squad is more than good enough to be comfortably in the top half of the table. I know it sounds obvious but they just need to play better and, especially after the last two games, the team selection/rotation needs to improve. You can’t constantly lust for fresh meat.

At the end of the season, Cook will go and I doubt we'll be extending JCS' contract. Morrison always looks susceptible to losing battles with a big brute and is not unfamiliar with the treatment table, and Mbengue, mad as a bag of frogs.

January might be the time to get him, if waiting until July proves risky. Also, it's probably too early to be thinking of Tylon the Pylon and Tim A. being regular starters.

Are we allowed to know how long JCS has got left on his contract?
It doesn't feel like too long ago when a lot of people were happy that after a miracle 20+ game season we had locked Jake down into a contract extension.

I think the injury to Field might open the door to a move for Edwards, as he can cover DCM, RB and CB, so could tick that utility player box

Good point re Edwards and yes he did a great job as CDM against Leeds last season.

Personally I'd play him as a defensive midfielder or sweeper (what happened to sweepers btw?) He is exactly the progressive player we need to advance us 20 yards further up the pitch and allow our mighty midgets to really do damage. Currently there is far too much space between our midfield and our attack, hence the 'direct' approach, which doesn't suit our slower players like Kone or Frey. Get Chair, Saito Dembele on the ball in the final third with forward passing /running from Edwards/Madsen and then our strikers can stay in the box where they are most potent.

u had me until u said running from madsen , sorry he makes little effort to join in when we do break with pace , we loose the ball and its panic stations in the middle ,varanne wont track back madsen just sort of watches , both have regressed badly this season under the promise shown in the second half of last season , but due to money ball they seem to be the only players who arent on the rotation system this season .

Madsen hasn’t regressed since last season: he was one of our best players earlier this season and has regressed since being taken off corners and free kicks. Not sure of his role in the team at the moment.

Presumably Morgan and the recently signed Adamson are inadequate as reserve RBs?

If we can get Edwards on the cheap it's worth having a punt. From what we saw last season, he looks a better footballer than Cook, Dunne and Mbengue.

Otherwise, somebody to replace Frey, (6 months early(?) should be our only January purchase.

This squad is good enough, already, with consistency, to be top half

True.

The consistency bit is the key!

We've got to be one of the most consistent teams in the Championship over the last 10 years.

Well, I think he's been good going forward - not lightening fast but a good crosser.

He’s fine - the point in the original post though was that if he was out of contract and in budget we should sign him.

He’s not, we would have to buy him and he’s on a nice wedge.

Very true. I don't understand this either, Madsen's the best dead ball kicker we have. As essential as Chair is, his corner kicks are average at best and lack variety.

Maybe Chair is taking the corner kicks/free kicks because with his size Madsen is more useful in the box receiving them or obstructing their Keeper as I've seen him do, than Chair is.

Fair point, Oslo.

I was actually wondering wjat the logic might be.

Not sure it matters either way, though. I think it was Jack Supple who pointed out that we were 23rd out of 24th at both attacking and defending set-pieces, and that was before Chair's return.

Chairs corners at Blackburn were right on the money . The commentators on the Blackburn ifollow mentioned them several times about how dangerous they were and how we had obviously done our homework on their keeper

Definitely more pace and swing on them, I thought, Mart?

I do think Madsen has been better than Chair on corners, but Oslo's point has to be considered, and also that we may not be as good this season at positioning, runs, decoys etc.

Unless someone tells me differently we are still losing £1.3M per month funded by our owners. We only have the squad we have thanks to the Eze money (again) but unless we can sell one of our players for decent money (Chair) we are going to have to cut our cloth accordingly.

Well we were in for Edwards in August, so there is probably, some headroom in the FFP budget, haven't spent all of the Eze windfall yet.

We need a decent goalkeeper too.

As for Frey, we had Kone on the bench and Kolli walking round B&Q on Saturday. If the coach (or Nourry) think Frey is a better option than them, then it doesn't matter who we sign.

True - not sure we'll be getting another keeper though. Unless they think they can finally offload Nardi and replace him.

I really don't think the manager reckons Frey is a better option than the other forwards available.
