Saints charged with spying 09:48 - May 9 with 102696 viewsKensalT

Southampton haven't yet denied these allegations!

For anyone who doesn't know Boro caught someone with some very sophisticated cameras and recording equipment spying on one of their training sessions.

Apparently Boro are looking into the possibility that Saints have done this to other teams this season.

Nightmare timing for the EFL. I can't see any way for them to fudge this

I've always said there should be a special Olympic catagory where they can take all the drugs they like.

100m in under 6 seconds, weight lifting family cars, and female shot putters slinging medicine balls out of stadiums.

Nah.

The Mexicans will clean up

Fair enough, but do they hang around all day hoping those specific walk throughs happen?

What if the day they choose to spy on, the opposition are doing fitness or watching videos?

Do these spies ask for the training plan in advance?

The current rule is you can't view another teams training within 72 hours of a game which is what they will be done for. So if you are doing things like team shape or set pieces teams are more likely to do it in that window.

I'd imagine most teams would go through plans for a Saturday game on a Thursday or Friday. Just because this fella got caught on this day doesn't mean he hadn't been there several times before

Times going big on it. Talk of a points deduction next year if they lose tonight, a 3-0 Boro first leg win being awarded, or Boro being given passage to the final regardless...

Just out of interest what do you think would be a fair punishment, assuming Saints are guilty and that this is just a one-off and that they haven't been at it through the season?

If that's the case, it's even more baffling to me.

If they were there several times before it means he MUST have sat through some worthless dross while risking the club's promotion chances or a points deduction.

Imagine getting caught spying, getting a points deduction for your club, but all you got was a video of Wally Downs eating custard through the canteen window.

Is that Wally Down's party trick?

Joey Barton took the piss out of our training once, citing Wally Downes eating custard as evidence.

Edit: Ha! Just got it.

Very EFL indeed that this exact thing has happened before and they didn’t think to write a rule down that says “in future, if you do this, this is the punishment”.

Make them take Russell Martin back for a full season.

I see Boro have employed our very own Nico to represent them.

I need a SAGA. What’s the SAGA? It’s ….. Queen’s Park Rangers.

the efl will do nothing then penalise qpr after realising it is the thing to do
with 2nd legs soon and the final, the league have to act asap

Yep, we are sure to be punished for this.

I predict that the EFL will introduce a mid-season split, after which we will have to play Preston 23 times. Away.

You heard it here first .

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Blimey - they were at it with us as well. No wonder they beat us so easily.

Dear Tonda

Please find my training report on QPR.

Regards

BondLeTiss007

***CONFIDENTIAL***

Corner kick routines:

1) Scuff to first defender at near post

2) Look for Jimmy Dunne

3) Still look for Jimmy Dunne, even if he's not playing

Goal kick routines

1) Keeper passes to centre back close to him. Centre back passes to right back. Right back hoofs it up pitch.

2) Keeper passes to centre back close to him. Centre back passes to right back. Right back passes back to keeper. Keeper faffs around till last second. Keeper hoofs it up pitch.

Free Kick routines

1) If more than 40 yards from goal, pass to Varane. Varane passes it back to keeper.

2) If crossable - floaty, unthreatening cross into goalie's arms.

3) If potential shot on - either Chair or Madsen to balloon it 25 yards over the bar.

Kick off routines

They tend to do this quite often away from home, so worth noting.

1) Smash it straight out of play, especially to the side where we have our strongest players.

2) Aim for Jimmy Dunne, but usually into the stands.

Possible formations

1) 4 4 2

2) 4 four 2

3) four four 2

4) four 4 2

5) four four two

Hope this helps

I love the fact that Southampton have launched an "investigation" and the manager can't talk about it during Saints internal inquest, as though the analyst is gonna be some rogue operative who's decided to do this off his own back. Come on Hull.

And after their fans thinking it's comedy gold, I would love to see them booted out of the play-offs.

If we go with so what to this rule can we say so what to the financial rules as well and spend what we like?

Southampton signed up to these rules, if they are going to break them they should be punished.

Lets be honest this isn't likely to be a one off I'm sure the crazy winning run they have been on has in no way been helped by doing similar things and catching teams out

If you know every set piece a team is going to do or how they plan to press or set up defensively you have a massive advantage that other teams don't have

Well if Boro really can get evidence that they did it against other opponents too, I reckon Southampton are stuffed. Any defence involving a one-off "rogue intern" will be dead in the water. Got to be chucked out the playoffs, surely. I note Boro are still 14/1 to win them!

Yeh, it's not good. I thought it was a bit of an overreaction at first but maybe not.
Was chatting to a mate last night and as he points out Hull basically beat Millwall by flicking to a back three and catching them out, would they have been able to do that if Millwall had been watching their training? Hellberg made a lot of sense in his press conference last night as well, and agree with Dave B above we can't just pick and choose what laws we abide by.

Leeds did it in the Premier League 2019 spygate being managed by Bielsa

Got a hefty £200,000 fine and a strong worded reprimand

I don’t see how they can deduct points or kick them out of playoff final since you have had precedent punishment?

The problem the EFL have now is time, and I can't see how this gets done with appeals in the next 10 days. Southampton have around 150million on the line here, they are not giving that up without a fight even if they know they are guilty. Kicking someone out of the playoffs has never been done before.

The post match by the boro manager was great and put things into perspective for m as to why it should be taken seriously.

He said along the lines of for any game you spend hours watching videos, analysing the opposition, and looking for an advantage. You give up time with your family and work into the night. If you lose because you failed to spot something they do or weren't prepared enough you have not done your job properly. It should be the harder the work the better you get. But what is the point of all that if the other team can just send someone to come and watch you train, it's a shortcut and makes a mockery of the hard work other managers are putting into it all.

I do feel for the players and fans in all this, we went through it with Faurlin and really got away with it, on the pitch I thought they deserved it last night and will be unfair for the players/fans if they are kicked out but that's all on their manager and his staff.

There was no law at that stage against this, due to what Leeds did they brought a rule in.
The fine was for unsporting behaviour which they have also been charged with and will likely be a fine

I think the rule has become formal since then. Previously it was vague. Hence the precedent need not apply.
