Southampton haven't yet denied these allegations!
For anyone who doesn't know Boro caught someone with some very sophisticated cameras and recording equipment spying on one of their training sessions.
Apparently Boro are looking into the possibility that Saints have done this to other teams this season.
Nightmare timing for the EFL. I can't see any way for them to fudge this

One of the stupidest things anyone has done in years.
Still I think forfeiting the match or starting at 0-3 is way over the top. I'd put it on the level of diving for a penalty or pretending to be hit in the face to get someone sent off. Just had a thought that VAR put a stop to some of that stuff as crap as it is. | | | |

Problem is they were caught cheating before the first match, not the second one.
If the EFL tried to change the result of the first leg retrospectively the Saints would drag them into court.
Maybe that's why Southampton didn't respond to the charges before the first leg was played.
Besides, I don't think a 3-0 forfeit would have been sufficient punishment here. We've seen teams turn that around before now. |

I'm amazed how many people online seem to think this is just a bit of everyday ducking and diving.
If you saw the Saints presser after the match the press officer pulled Eckert out of there because the media didn't want to talk about anything else.
I think part of the problem here is that Leeds and Bielsa got let off lightly when they were caught at it a few years ago.
When the Canada women's team were caught out at the 2024 Olympics the punishment was much more severe, including three of the coaches being banned from football for a year. If you haven't read about it already see here:

For me this sort of cheating completely undermines the integrity of the sport and goes beyond the sort of overspending we got absolutely hammered for and are still paying off.
Maybe I'm in the minority on this but given the overall value of winning the Championship playoffs I think the punishment here should be severe enough to discourage anyone from trying it again. | | | |

Retrospective punishment for Afcon was a lot easier as it is a knockout tournament: much harder to implement in a league format. EFL will be crossing everything that Southampton don’t get promoted. |  | | |

Fair play to kensalriser and francisbowles, I had forgotten about the Afcon final:
"The Confederation of African Football said its appeal board ruled Senegal was "declared to have forfeited the Final" and its 1-0 win in extra time becomes a 3-0 default win for host nation Morocco."

The decision here seems to be punishment for Senegal walking off, which has been interpreted as them forfeiting the match.
I don't know if there's anything in any football rules that says walking off means you forfeit the match. It certainly hasn't been applied when teams have walked off because a teammate has been racially abused.

Did the same with Leicester when they didn't act fast enough.

Leicester was different, the punishment was imposed by the PL but couldn't be applied in the EFL.
The rules have now been changed.
Besides, what happens if Saints do go up and don't come straight back down?
Leicester and Bournemouth both ignored the FFP rules to get promotion to the PL. When they didn't drop straight back the EFL ended up negotiating fines for them. I forget how much they were fined but it was nothing like the punishment we got for the same offence. | | | |

What would the EFL say or do if it hadn’t been discovered and Southampton found out Boro’s game plans without Boro knowing they knew?They could get beaten because Southampton knew exactly what their plans were.

If we go with so what to this rule can we say so what to the financial rules as well and spend what we like?
Southampton signed up to these rules, if they are going to break them they should be punished.
Lets be honest this isn't likely to be a one off I'm sure the crazy winning run they have been on has in no way been helped by doing similar things and catching teams out
If you know every set piece a team is going to do or how they plan to press or set up defensively you have a massive advantage that other teams don't have [Post edited 12 May 12:37]

If Saints win then they have to make a decision, wait till they lose the final and then do em for 12 pts again or ban em and let Boro progress to the final anyway (Still completes the TV deal that does).
Or wait till the Saints lose the final and do e mfor 12 pts or if they win, block the move to the Prem and award the PL promo to the other team. Although Boro may take them to court for that as they will claim they should have been in the final and would have won that.

Before you know it everyone will be at it, there'll be people setting themselves up as independent spies to sell on the info, clubs will install extra security at training grounds, fans will get banned from attending and it'll become a complete circus. | |
