Maybe if he didn’t have Saito, Chair, Smyth and Poku around him but lacks bite and presence.
If Varanne isn’t getting a central berth ahead of him then he really has fallen off a cliff
I cannot dispute the odd fantastic strikes from distance
I also can’t argue with the stats from last season

I'm just not sure what his best position is. The technical ability is there but he lacks the athleticism and pace to excel out wide, and lacks the bite and presence to dominate central midfield. |  | | |

That shot apart I think he’s been poor the last two games, he’s passed to the opposition more than his team mates, ( or so it seems before anyone throws his passing accuracy at me) his shooting has been very poor by his standards as well. |  |

Terrific squad player as he can fill in for a number of positions in a pinch. Would he be in my starting line up? No not right now. But I think he's got ability, maybe something breaks right for him and clicks this year. |  | | |

How that shot stayed out, I'll never know. The angle it came in from and the curl on it, meant it that should have merely kissed the post en route to being a goal. If it had done so, we were very much in the ascendency, and who knows.
Definitely huge improvements across the board from last season's games against them. We did ok!
As for Vale, you feel despite his attributes, he's never going to get hold of the game by the scruff of the neck and take charge and the best we can hope for from HV, is that his 'moments' will outweigh his 'meh' inputs. He's also the latest in a long list of employees who can ping a corner with precision accuracy on the noggins of the oppo's first man and I never get excited when he's standing over the ball to take a freekick.
All the skill and we should be talking more positively about his performances than we do. Ultimately, he's a poor man's Cole Palmer for my money! |  |

Similar to the winner against Stoke last season, similar minute too but not to be. I thought it was in from R Block, knew the game was up after that didn't sneak in.

Not a 'big fan' of Vale - he is ok(ish), very surprised that he gets so much game time & has started 5 first team matches out of 6. He is not good enough for that with the squad that we have. Unsure if he is a CM or wide player!! Another poor choice by JS.

I was right in line with that shot in the lower Loft - it was coming right at us and I was certain it was going in. Couldn't believe it when it bounced out - looked to hit the inside of the angle and somehow bounce out.
I like Vale - I don't think he's a central midfielder, but for me he's shown enough skill to suggest he can become a really important player for us - but he needs to play out wide in my view. |  |

If it's the pass I'm thinking of he received it back to goal somewhere in the middle of the pitch and hit a round-the-corner sort of pass out to I think Smyth on the left. It was a superb pass.
He's a real enigma, clearly has talent and like Madsen last season you get the sense he reads the game better than most. But his attributes don't obviously map on to a position.
I think CM is probably the right position, where he can link up play , but he does (like Madsen did) need to work on the physical side of the game.
Re the goal that wasn't, you wouldn't want anyone else arriving to hit that ball with their left foot from that angle, that curling for the top corner shot is very much in his locker. Absolutely gutting that the laws of physics went AWOL for a moment and it stayed out [Post edited 7 Sep 9:49]

Vale is a bit like a poor man's Iniesta for me (and I'm not just talking about the hair battles!). Good vision, good technique, even not bad in the tackle. But lacking the speed or turn of pace for a true AM, and not physically imposing enough for a CM.
Potential is no doubt there.... to fulfil it there probably either needs to be a system around him which covers what he lacks, or we need to work a way of boosting one of the characteristics he's low on. I like him, but always think he lacks pace for a wide man, but if he had scored all his recent chances, then that would have quickly been forgotten.
I wonder if when we (fingers crossed) have a fully fit and firing Tariq Lamptey, who appears to have bags of pace, that they could work togethor really well going forward at least down the right. |  | | |

I think so. Last season was his first proper season for us and that was a short season because of his recovery from a broken back. This is only his first full season and the kid is only 22 (for 3 more days).
He was very highly rated at Chelsea to go on to very big things before the injury and I think he could be a pivotal player for us. But he needs games and he's relatively inexperienced still. But he could be another Faurlin for us. | |

I really like him as a player.
No way though is he a centre mid. For me, his best position is in the ten role and likely to be interchangeable with Ilias in that role.
He seems to have rushed a few passes and shots in the first few games and not been anywhere near his best, but as proven by the hit kept out by the inside of the post, he can have moments of brilliance.
For me, he is not guaranteed in the best eleven, but as a bench player and occasional starter, i think he more than fulfills the role. Will improve also for me.
Had a good season last time especially as he was coming back from a broken back. Hopefully Harvey will shine more going forwards. |  |

This is a good point.
He's young, clearly a decent player and reads the game well. Another two or three seasons under his belt , i think he'll be a step up.
I'd like to see him toughen up a bit though, get more stuck into the opposition. He's more a Buzsaky than a Rowlands type player, i think. Does a lot of the nice stuff, but less of the dirty work. If that makes any sense. [Post edited 7 Sep 19:15]
