I turned into Ellerslie road bang on 3pm just before a large police escort of brummies was being escorted from the Uxbridge road . Now I was running late as I have a similar journey to the blues fans but suspect the reasons for getting there at that time was a bit different to theirs  !
Anyway as I went passed the cage turnstiles there was a bit of a que and a few who where through the first gate where getting a bit uppity with the police.
I suspect the fact that a few hundred p!ssed up blokes turning up just behind a slight hold up caused by other fellow supporters turning up late and getting gobby, all trying to get in after the game has started doesn't help |  | | |

Totally agree with Dave B. I can never understand why people think it's OK to turn up for a football match at 5 to 3 and expect to walk straight in. Why don't they just arrive 30 mins earlier to ensure they gain entry in plenty of time? Incredibly annoying every week to have to continually stand up to allow these tvvats to get to their seat after the game has started - no consideration for other people. |  | | |

What does them being brummies have to do with anything? There were children there, dads trying to take their children to the football and having to be concerned for their safety. It seems it was poorly handled by both sides and as Brian says, a proper investigation should take place.
It seems if managed properly the club can accomodate all fans arriving in an orderly fashion and in good time, but if the whole system becomes undone due to pissed up fans, you've got a problem. |  |

It's a known problem at sporting events that you get sudden crowd surges. Ideally the infrastructure of a sports ground should help handle such surges. In the absence of such an infrastructure (e.g. at older grounds) you need expert human handling of the situation. | |

Nothing to do with them being Brummies, but your point on kids, the Birmingham supporters had been escorted from a couple of pubs on the Bush Green from about 2.30pm, these supporters had been drinking for quite a while and there were Dad's with kids within this group. Now being a father myself that takes his son to football matches the last thing that I would ever do would be to go to a pub with mates with him in tow and get pissed up and wait until the last possible minute to leave for the ground. I would make sure that my sons needs come first. Call me old fashioned or what. It should also be noted that this is the first time we have had problems with away supporters this season and the first time that such an incident has occurred. All caused by a few hundred p1ssed up supporters. |  |

I agree with Tactical and Brian. If this was QPR away and coaches were delayed or trains broke down and everyone turned up at the away ground at the last minute and we were subjected to this there would be murders. I have walked in to SAR stand at 2:50 or later on occasions for one reason or another and I have had to negotiate my way around a large stream trying to get in to the Loft who are in the way of the SAR entrance area.
So we can't just laugh at the brummies for arriving at the last minute pissed up.
It's a football match and many on here want the right to have a 3pm kickoff so they can get to the pub first at opening time and it is plain to see the number of people jogging up the stairs of SAR stand come 3:05pm - 3:10pm. So we are not whiter than white.
If we cannot respect other clubs fans as genuine football fans like us, then why should we expect to be treated as such by authorities when we go away.
The club should investigate this and see if their are lessons to learned for crowd safety.

Yeah agreed, I also had my boy with me on Saturday and had to forego the usual pre and post drinking. But it could be that they were just running late and got caught up in the melee? Either way it seems that just deciding 'you're not coming in' is not the safest way to deal with things. | |

Agree with Brian here. The accusations of shutting the gates due to two idiots kicking off and consequently causing a crush could have been a catastrophic error. Sounds like people were hurt anyway and when there's kids involved it's extremely sad to hear this happened at QPR.
It seems something is a miss though, police saying they can't re-open the gate as it's private property?
I reckon the Police could have over ridden this given the circumstances unravelling. Surely there must be a full police investigation if the Birmingham fans have made a complaint? |  | | |

This I feel is only going to get worse with lots of mudslinging going around.

I have to disagree on this because, rightly or wrongly, I would expect that all clubs have to perform regular risk assessments (or should be) where they should be going through every possible scenario that could present itself ahead of a large scale event and 14k-18K people arriving at LR is a large scale event - even if that event happens every other Saturday between August and May. If there was an accident on the M40 at Saturday lunchtime, which meant that 3K Birmingham supporters were arriving in to the School End area en masse at 2:50pm, there should be contingency arrangements around ensuring that the arriving coaches are coordinated from the time they arrive in to the LF vacinity.
I fully accept that there will have been a significant number of pissed brummies arriving after necking their last pints really late, but that happens at the entrance to The Loft most weeks as well from what I can see and it amounts to the same thing if hundreds are arriving at an entrance all at the same time. It doesn't matter why they are late, it's a question of how do you cope with that situation.
Perhaps the club DID do the right thing and it did go to plan because we do not have the facts, but that is why the club's match day operational procedures need to be checked to see what was done, by whom and why and whether it was as per the agreed plan and what lessons were learnt from it. We do have an old style cramped stadium in a cramped busy area and we do not want to be the ones with our own Hillesborough tragety.

Spot on DW. Most people on here are guessing as to what happened as am I. What occurred on Sat I am afraid is symptomatic of our current selfish society. The people who just have to have one more drink although they have probably had a skinfull already, the idiots who get to the ground pissed up and then cause trouble which then multiplies out side the ground because the stewards/ police have to close the turnstiles to deal with these pricks. And we all know what happened on a previous occasion when gates were opened at a football ground and fans both those with and without tickets and a belly full of beer were allowed in ! All this to draw attention away from the disgracefull behaviour of some of the fans who decided to throw coins at the home fans which resulted in some of the disabled section being hit, blow enough smoke around and the real issue will be lost. You see it every day when you are in your car, people so fixated with their mobile phones they can,t take their eyes of them for a minute whilst in charge of a piece of machinery weighing best part of a ton which can reach speeds in excess of 100 mph.I am not aiming this just at one set of fans but lets be honest I can,t remember the last time this happened with any other team so some of the blame has to go to Birmingham City fans. | | | |
