First things first, this is very much purposefully an over-reacting post.
Secondly and perhaps the most important thing. Monk needs to cut out this air of arrogance he's coming across with. The way he talked about getting back to the Swansea way and pretty much disrespecting Laudrup in the process is starting to make him look a bit silly, naive and out of his depth.
WTF is this 442 nonsense? WTF is Gylfi doing out on the right, but not just for half hour when it was clear to everyone it wasn't working, but no, for the whole game?
It's a bit much to expect a lot from Garry though, you know, a player without Premier League management experience and as it goes without any Premier League playing experience. The arrogance of the Board in appointing him is not just risky, it's pretty baffling really.
We've got one week to sort things out, there's an awful lot to do in that time coming off the back of the only friendly game I can ever remember where the team was boo'd off... And in fairness they deserved to be, or at least Monk did.

I think GM was lulled into a bit of false security after the result at Reading playing 4-4-2. The difference today was that we had no balance in midfield and Rangel, whenever he got the ball, didn't have his usual options because Gylfi was drifting infield most of the time. Defensively, the same thing happened quite often with Rangel finding himself exposed up against 2 or 3 opponents. We looked better balanced as soon as Bray came on, IMO so hopefully Dyer and Routledge won't be out for too long.
As for the midfield itself, I thought Shelvey was poor and Ki not much better. Gylfi made little impact due to being played out of position. Montero looks exciting when he runs at his man but didn't do that often enough for me - not sure if that's a fitness thing.
At the back, Bartley did OK but no more than that and things looked better when Amat came on. Williams had an average game and certainly didn't cover himself in glory with their 3rd goal - shades of Southampton last season. I thought Taylor was probably our best player over the 90 minutes. Fabianski's distribution needs a LOT of work but he takes crosses well (bar the one he spilled late second half). I haven't seen any highlights yet to see whether he could have done better with the free kick goal.
Up front, it has to be either Bony or Gomis and, to be honest, I wouldn't mind which one GM went with.
It's often said that you learn more in defeat than in victory and hopefully that will be the case here.
p.s. I was sat close to the centre of the East Stand and I definitely didn't hear any boos so they must have been very localised, possibly in the vicinity of a TV mic. I doubt the players heard anything. |  | | |

I heard the booing in the centre of the East Stand too. I wouldn't read too much into it ... it was hardly vitriolic and usual fare after seeing your team get pumped like that on home turf.

Maybe he wanted to see whether the players could make it work in a meaningless game. They didn't of course, but you don't rip up plans just because something doesn't work in the first 30 mins of a practice game. Surprised we went the full 90 pretty much doing the same thing, but if this is Plan A then it needs game time.
I hope everyone's saving some energy for next week. I fear with all the reactionary posts on yur there'll be no bile left if we get pumped at Old Trafford, which wouldn't exactly be the biggest surprise in the world. |  |

This season is shaping up to be unfortunately a harsh reality check for a board, player, many fans and scouting department (bringing in ngog and emnes) who thought they knew better at what it takes to succeed at the top level of football. Than a man who spent this entire career there. Maybe some more double training sessions we need. Please don't kid yourselves this is a one off. We have been getting pinned in our own half unable to get out with any fluency for a large amount of games he has managed in. So to assist with that. We have now got rid of some of our best players on the ball. Marvellous approach. |  | | |

He showed no respect or humility then and for some reason has been telling us all how things are going to be and we'll be going back to the old Swansea, the "real" Swansea as he said to Ki just last week.

To the OP.
I thought Monk spoke with a lot of sense when he took over. I personally thought we'd be relegated under ML and said so, to huge criticism on here weeks before ML was sacked. Would we have been relegated had ML stayed, we will never know.
The comments he made about teams having to react to us when we play at the Liberty and not the other way around were spot on and he pretty much proved that with most home performances.
Naïve and out of his depth? We will soon find out I suppose and that is a valid theory. I certainly thought he was guilty of being naïve in saying he wanted to sort his squad out prior to pre season. How naïve he was yesterday is difficult to tell. How naïve he has been in his dealings with players again difficult to say, although, as very much a supporter of GM i'd have to say that things so far don't look great.
What I would say and very much a cliché' but 'the season is a marathon', but in reality the Swans will always be a team looking over their shoulders at relegation. It may be a case of short term gain for long term gain.
Get in the players he wants, with the right mentality and in the long term it will pay dividends. That's how I like to think it will pan out.
