Some observations, Lisa, she has been saying what has been happening but not saying she agreed with it. AFD and Ladyjack have rounded on her as if she's Bojo in disguise.
Ladyjack says it's not trolling but then posts a pithy comment ending with a lol, seems like a wind up to me.
I have no idea what will wok, what the right answer is in how to deal with this but neither do many of the experts. If experts disagree those in power have to go with one of the options. In that case they can never win, even if they take the right option because when people are dying the opposition will always use it to attack you and say you could have done better.
I'm sticking with the hand washing, the social distancing but otherwise getting on with life as normally as possible. Many of us on here will probably get the virus, hopefully nobody succumbs to it, it really would help if people didn't panic. |

This talk of people being “sacrificed” is ridiculous. Some people will die from this. Possibly lots. But no one will be sacrificed or left to die. The strategy, such as it is, is to let those of us who can get infected without too much bother get on with it while trying to delay the peak of the outbreak until the better weather comes along and NHS resources are less stretched so better able to treat those who won’t be able to cope with the virus as well as other. The old, infirm, vulnerable and those with existing conditions. I have no idea whether this approach will work, none of us does, but it’s no better or worse a strategy than any other country as far as I can tell. [Post edited 14 Mar 2020 19:22]

The only issue with that is that you need an aggressive approach to protecting the vulnerable, which doesn’t appear to be happening. That will result in unnecessary deaths.
Anyway, apparently the Government are now considering bans on mass gatherings. Seems at odds with an encouraged spread. I don’t know what the thinking behind that is: u-turn or all part of the plan? |  | | |

Have just seen a projection by Bill Hanage- Professor of Public Health at Harvard. His research group have estimated that even on low level transmission and high level detection is that cases in 20-40 years old ( the lowest risk group) more will need ICU or high dependency beds that are available in the U.K., assuming no other disease. Hanage is well-respected. This highlights how risky the current strategy is. It is within the science but at the extreme. It is certainly not a consensus view. It does strike me that Cummings is driving this. My feeling is that it is very likely wrong, but sometimes the outlier is right. I hope this is the case.

Yesterday, I asked that very bat question on here to 'Professor' relating to a species-jump originating from wet market consumable products of lesser conventional menu and of exotic quality/species.

' Hundreds of scientists have written to the government urging them to introduce tougher measures to tackle the spread of Covid-19.
In an open letter, a group of 229 scientists from UK universities say the government's current approach will put the NHS under additional stress and "risk many more lives than necessary".
The signatories also criticised comments made by Sir Patrick Vallance, the government's chief scientific adviser, about managing the spread of the infection to make the population immune.
The Department of Health said Sir Patrick's comments had been "misinterpreted".
In their letter the scientists also questioned the government's view that people will become fed up with restrictions if they were imposed too soon.
Their letter was published on the day it was announced 10 more people in the UK have died after testing positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths to 21.
Meanwhile the government's scientific advisory group for emergencies (Sage) advised that measures to protect vulnerable people - including household isolation - "will need to be instituted soon".
Sir Patrick and the UK's chief medical adviser, Prof Chris Whitty, have said they intend to publish the computer models on which their strategy is based.'

Hindsight is great isn't it. If we had gone for the nuclear option straight off, if Bojo had closed down all travel into and out of the UK, if all entering had been tested, if he'd stopped all majot events, closed schools and told people to socially isolate it would have been criticised.
If that lock down had happened straight away and there was hardly a case in the UK people would have been calling it far too extreme. Another truth is it wouldn't matter who the PM was, Corbyn would face as much stick as Bojo.
It's very much a case of the government not being able to win whatever happens. Now all we can do is follow advice and hope for the best.
Maybe if Countries weren't so suspicious of each other, if humanity actually worked together on a global scale and stopped being so selfish we could avoid these things. We don't need an EU or a NAFTA or any other protectionist group. We need the whole world to unite and that is a massive pipe dream. Too many people are happy to cause death and destruction as long as they profit and someone, somewhere is definitely making a profit out of this. | |

Good post, I was thinking earlier, surely it would have been better once the outbreak happened in wuhan, to stop all incoming transport, nobody enters. I think I'm most probably talking a few months before your timeline, but I think that's what should have been done, no doubt they will implement something like that soon, but when you think of it, if the uk had stopped all entries when it was first reported, there would be no need for what we are going through now. | |
