| Coronavirus mortality 23:32 - Oct 2 with 16367 views | Professor | Let’s put a true perspective on this. 99.5% of people survive. Well maybe, though probably closer to 99%. Imagine a full house at the Liberty. Imagine as you go out a line of 120 people (maybe 240). They are executed. That is a 0.5% mortality rate. It’s not a binary disease either. More will have long term illness. Just think about that. This is not supporting a lockdown or any other specific intervention. Just a reality check. By the way flu has a 0.1% mortality rate. | | | | |

I’ve hardly seen anybody without a mask, and those that haven’t worn them have a badge or a lanyard explaining they are exempt. People are definitely complying with this.

It is pretty much complied with in shops here. Bigger problem is people wearing them to get on buses then taking them off. Son spoke to his mate who is doing a PhD in Liverpool. He commented on lack of social distancing there and people ignoring guidelines. After Cummings and now the idiot Scottish woman it is easy to see why people are not following the rules. One rule for them and another for the rest of us. I think the big problem at the moment is student's going to universities mixing in Halls or HMOs. Manchester has the biggest student population I believe and Liverpool has a number of universities based there and both have huge amounts. Similarly in Wales Cardiff, Swansea, RCT and Neath Port Talbot have large amounts and university campuses are based there. No figures released on this so difficult to know for definite.

Until the virus catches them however, then its the Govt/Tories/Posh/rich/Banks/Scientists or the neighbours cat fault. We as a society have to wipe these out

Therein lies a problem. Whatever restrictions are applied, if not complied with by all, they won't work. No doubt Rich you read about the Liverpool hairdresser who had a poster saying it was a fake and followed no distancing or masks. Thankfully shut down by the council.

The areas most affected are the areas with an awful lot of people crammed together and moving about for work etc. Social distancing is not always possible, masks are not a magic shield, they help mitigate but you can still catch and spread stuff whilst wearing them. The only sure fire way of stopping this virus passing from person to person is if everybody keeps away from everyone else at all times which isn’t possible or realistic.

It doesnt cost much to do simple measures to stop this spreading .

Absolutely, but that’s the point, all we can really do is mitigate and minimise the risk. Lockdown utterly failed because there were still so many people treating it like a holiday fannying about having garden parties, protesting about Edward bloody Colston or that junkie criminal George Floyd or going to the beach etc. We’ve completely wasted about eight months of our incredibly short time on this planet.

Lockdown didn't fail, cases dropped significantly, it's when we opened up and ppl took the piss did the second wave appear

It worked very well. The half-arsed measures being imposed now do not. Likelihood of transmission outside is also pretty low- the mask article suggests the US protests are not associated with significant transmission events.

I imagine even a virus would want to social distance from those antifa freaks in case it catches something nasty. Also if there’s science that outdoor transmission is low surely we should be allowed back to the football?

Transmission is low unless long term exposure and enhanced by shouting/singing. I would suggest that scientifically a crowd of say 10-15% capacity would be possible. But there would have to be a way of avoiding close contact on entry/exit. No bars/food service. Controlled entry to toilets etc. You could have a family 'bubble' together, but otherwise separation of about 4m would be good, with masks, strict compliance with seating at allocated seats etc. 2.5K would be better than none

It doesn't cost much, but people are too stupid to do it even if it is free. Plus some businesses are ignoring their role too. I've been to a handful of pubs since they opened - some I'd happily take my 70 plus year old parents too because they are safe. Others I won't set foot in again until this is completely under control because they have just opened the doors as they were in March and let as many in as they can possible serve. What'll probably happen over the next couple of weeks? They'll ALL be told to close again. The same could be said for Gyms and shops. There should have been clear enforcement from the day they opened.

It's obvious. But the lack of control has severely messed things up for the wider population and retail/hospitality industry. Sunday is supposedly half decent-so may go for a beer outside the pub near me. Will almost certainly be closed on Monday. Mixed messages from government and media have not helped. The idea of there was no virus because of the false positives was a disastrous message many bought into. Wrongly.

The problem is that since masks have become compulsory in shops the number of cases have rocketed. This has happened in Wales recently and previously in England. The safest way to stop this is social distancing and hand washing. When Johnson introduced masks in England cases went up whilst Wales which didnt have the same rules it went down until Masks were brought in when the cases went up. The reality is that wearing of masks in shops hasnt made matters any better. What is abundantly clear is that things started to go wrong in Wales when our borders were opened. Allied to this people coming back and spreading it by going out in pubs. These are things that have caused the current problems and recently students going back to universities have multiplied the issue. The live in the same halls or HMOs sharing Kitchens and sometimes bathrooms. There have been hundreds of cases where Welsh students have gone to English universities recently and been tested as positive. We dont know how many English students have caused the same effect here as the figures dont show that.

I think you may have that backwards, they introduced masks because the cases were already going up.

Masks were made compulsory in shops in Wales on 15 September. There were no new cases in Swansea Bay on that day. On 22 September there were 31 in 1 day and today there was 72. There has been an increase since they were introduced. It isnt the sole reason but the fact is that numbers have risen whereas before masks were introduced we didnt have this jump.

It's called a second wave and coincided with mask wearing being made mandatory. Most of it seems to be in unis and places where masks are not being used.

Nobody knows. The figures dont show that. The only thing that is shown in the Public Health Wales figures is that there have been 677 cases in the last week in the figures provided for Wales which were resident outside Wales which relate to Welsh students studying mainly in England. The majority of students didnt come back until 19 September and by 23 September there were 41 cases. Given that the recording date is several days after the actual test date it is highly unlikely these all related to students. It has risen since which may or may not be attributable to students. Over the last 4 days the amounts have been 95, 47, 105 and 72 in a day despite masks being worn in shops.
