Dr Drakeford and his cronies have really set the bar high on the incompetence stakes on this one.
They have announced tonight that retailers will only be allowed to sell “essential goods” during the 17 day lockdown but they are unable to say what counts as essential or non essential. At the time of writing this there is just over 18 hours to go until these rules come into force. The predictable result is that the entire population of Wales will rush out in the short time that is left and ravage the shelves of anything and everything that could potentially count as non essential. Meanwhile retailers are completely in the dark with just a few hours to go they are blissfully unaware of what they will or won’t be allowed to sell or whether they’ll be allowed to stay open at all.
Absolute idiocy from dippy Drakeford and this cabal of insidiously irrational imbeciles.

I think Drakers had a difficult call to make. He’s been roasted by some for going with the firebreak and he also copped it for not going soon enough and now not long enough. If he’s gone with the science I’d have no issue with what he’s done, if its because of political posturing then I won’t be happy. Same for Boris, but if rumours are to be believed his advice was to go 6 weeks ago.
I am concerned about the length of the firebreak and I don't think Drakers should have committed to back to normal on Monday if the numbers are still on the up, however the issue around the funding of the furlow until England locked down may have been a factor.
The bottom line with any lockdown or fire break is that people need to obey the rules, if they don’t it causes huge problems and undermines the whole exercise. There are plenty of idiots out there who don’t care and Drakers and Noris need to be prepared to step up to the plate and sort them out. Personally, I’d fine law breakers on the first occasion, second occasion it’s a heavier fine, third occasion they'd be arrested, taken before the Court and be tagged, fourth time would be jail.
The second paragraph highlights one of the big problems. When Sunak refused Drakers request, said it wasn't possible but then did exactly what Drakers had reuested when England announced the lockdown, which was restart/extend furlough payments.
The 3 mainland govts are pushing against each other, it's posturingand it's costing lives. We need one voice to lead us through this but the big problem is that'd be the UK government and even councils in England are rebelling against Bojo.
It leads me to the conclusion we are screwed, we, the UK, will be the worst hit country in Europe.

We won't know if the firebreak has worked for at least a week after it finished. I personally know people who broke the rules including several medical staff, young people over the local park and some of my neighbours. I disagreed with aspects of the lockdown but I followed the rules regardless.
Correct

Welsh has equal status because the Senedd made it so.
Digital services require little printing, true, but the cost goes beyond what the Sened prints. Every utility has to send bilingual bills, we foot the cost. Schools have to make extra provisions, put another lesson into an already crowded and underfunded curriculum.
On Trident I agree. Cancel it and give Wales an extra 1o-12 billion!
Glad we agree on Trident.
Welsh has equal status. Thats the law.
Welsh in schools should be part of daily life, not an exam based study.
Most countries use 2languages its normal.

Up to a point I agree about Welsh, it should be part of daily life. However the damage was done by those darned English and was still being done until relatively quite recently. Other countries didn't have that level of interference for so long.
If the choice is between one child speaking Welsh or having a life saving operation, I know what I'd choose.

Why should it though?
If ,like most Swansea people, you only spoke English at home, learning Welsh come way behind leading a life of employment, health, and good family relations. I came from a split family ,so to speak, and Welsh was nothing if not divisive- a curse frankly.
Many things should be but it's what IS that matters.

Interesting that they "grade" them on their ability to speak / write a language.
Genuine question, do they do that with English speakers as well?
[Post edited 5 Nov 2020 19:32]
Certainly for most office jobs primarily conducted in the language the overwhelming majority of us speak in Wales, I would think the ability to be fluent in speaking reading and writing English would be a requirement of getting the job.
The provision in both languages on paper forms does seem like a mass environmental waste, when choice could easily be recorded, but If choice is not allowed then possibly a strategy to push the Welsh language, as was compulsion in schools. Although i was surprised, when choice was the option, how many from high speaking welsh communities preferred their forms in English.
I had a friend tasked with making up new words in Welsh, which did make me smile.
Speaking of being graded in Welsh and the vagaries of self assessment, I was once highly amused to find myself listed as a Welsh speaking contact merely because in all honesty I could not tick that I could speak no Welsh (although my knowledge was mainly from road signs and a few Welsh speaking workmates who had being willing to teach me a few phrases I was interested in, like would you like a cup of tea - the hand that holds the teapot rules the world ;))
Of course as actually is a primary objective of some and plan in some areas. The only real was to re-engineer the language back into full use is to force Welsh medium education. However that is very contentious (as was seen just West of the Swansea’s border not too long ago). As well as having many ‘immigrants’ running for the border (much to the delight of some) it would alienate many Welsh people who do not measure their Welshness in the language they speak.
Actually isn’t ‘Welsh’ a form of the old British language. Just as there are differences between North and South Wales. So this is a British issue surely?

First, let me preface them by aying that I do not hate Wales/Swansea/Welsh/Welsh language per se.orry to disappoint some of my old protaganists but I really do not.If I did,why post here >
English is THE international business langauge and speaking Welsh,is utterly irrelevant for anything outside Wales.Same with Basque,Gaelic,Catalan,Occitain. English is what is taught to billions world wide. It is spoken in more countries than any other in the world.
A personal observation's ;my son worked for several years for one of the world's biggest companies where executives would gather from all parts of Europe and the proceedings were conducted in English as were the interactions outside the meetings. The ability to speak ,say Occitain, was irrelevant in this environment yet Occitain is taught in French school as a second language and has bilingual signage.

Anyway,lockdown or Cloi I lawr-be safe
Morning OHL
I agree, but it is much more complicated than that and a lot of emotion involved. The forcing of the language, rather than choice, is very political and has long term repercussions.
Meanwhile the Dinosaurs are asking for their planet back.

Chad.Trust me ,nobody knows more than me the emotion Welsh evokes but that is the problem.
In many ways Wales is the worst off area in the UK and far more issues face it than what language is spoken.Having a bilingual road sign is the ultimate irrelevance. Flint Fflint .I rest my case..
We should be proud we have something unique from the rest of the world , that's another problem with globalism, we're all becoming robots. Embrace the culture FFS its ours and sets us apart from the rest .

What culture makes us different boundy?
Different from whom exactly
Firstly no I'm not a rabid nationalist far from it but I do believe we have something special and that should be protected. I myself find english folk aloof , unwelcoming and with a chip on their shoulders , but maybe that's just me . As I say the Welsh language is unique the english language isn't . I enjoy reading Welsh folklore and the fact that Cymrophobia does exist ( we must be doing something right). It took until 1967 for the language to be officially recognised that's how much the english rejected it. We had to have an Act of parliament enacted before someone could speak their 1st language in court .(yes they do exist) Our food is different, which relies mostly on locally available produce , including cawl or welsh cakes bara brith, Welsh rarebit is another local specialty, we brew our own whiskey The national and local eisteddfods. Our own dance ,songs, poetry, verse and history . Clothing, behaviour . all in they own way my culture .

When you say English folk ,consider there are 53 million of them.
Aloof? You have to be joking.Scousers ,Geordies,Brummies aloof. No way.
Many English people find the Welsh to have massive inferior complex manifest when we play at Rugby where we are obsessed with beating England;come to that football too.
We are seen to be narrow minded, insular, over emotional, and sentimental. The fact we see so much histrionics over a language or any criticism of us at all proves that.
Thankfully, not all Welsh people are like that ,in the same way as English people are not a you described.
I think this sums up the usefulness of the Welsh language act in the most populted parts of Wales.
That is hilarious, had not seen that one
You can just imagine it. Ask translation, what it is in Welsh, think their out of office reply is the translation and the sign made and erected and no one knows any difference. Poor things.

Sorry Chaddy, I have no idea what you are on about for most of that post, not being rude or argumentative.
But for your first paragraph, I think you may well be surprised that there are plenty enough people out there in senior jobs who struggle to write more than a few lines in good English, I see it every single day in my work. That's people in local authority, global businesses, architects, designers etc. It's a given than most can speak English fluently.
Edit to say, if i had my way, I would phase out English medium schools in Wales. Not totally get shot of them, but you would need to opt into one, as opposed to just go to your local school which would be English. Thankfully there are more and more Welsh medium schools being built every year.

It's getting hung up on the differences that causes many arguments.
We have much more in common with other cultures than we have differences. The truth about our culture is, it's nothing like the Welsh of ancient times, the language is different too. It is derived from ancient British/Celtic which is why the Welsh can claim to be these islands original inhabitants. If we could bring a Welsh person back from the past, lets say Hywel Dda, he would not have a clue what country he was in because it's nothing like his land in his time. Cultures evolve, they change, and things that are no longer needed just fade away.
