“Firebreak lockdown” a masterclass in incompetence. 23:33 - Oct 22 with 24894 viewsHighjack

Dr Drakeford and his cronies have really set the bar high on the incompetence stakes on this one.

They have announced tonight that retailers will only be allowed to sell “essential goods” during the 17 day lockdown but they are unable to say what counts as essential or non essential. At the time of writing this there is just over 18 hours to go until these rules come into force. The predictable result is that the entire population of Wales will rush out in the short time that is left and ravage the shelves of anything and everything that could potentially count as non essential. Meanwhile retailers are completely in the dark with just a few hours to go they are blissfully unaware of what they will or won’t be allowed to sell or whether they’ll be allowed to stay open at all.

Absolute idiocy from dippy Drakeford and this cabal of insidiously irrational imbeciles.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Blame the movement of people, not the government. Take a look at your favourite watering hole for an example.

I don't think Raynor has grasped anything about this pandemic at all.

Any more of this and you will joining me in the corner of Burning Hell Cymru where all those who have ever questioned the Welsh Language are sent. Mind you at least 75% of Wales be be there-the quiet ones in the corner that have been too scared to say anything remotely negative about an arcane to many ancient language that utterly divided Wales.

Morning Richie,

It annoys me that people think spending millions on pushing Welsh is critically needed. Do we see the Italians banging on about Latin? Languages come and go, there are many languages that were once quite widely used that are now extinct.

When people can't get operations, when there's not enough police to answer your 999 call, when there's not enough ambulances, when there's not enough teachers, when there's not enough firefighters, when there's no respite care beds, can we justify the spend on bilingualism?

All of my utility bills, all of my NHS appointment letters, all council letters and anything from the Senedd come in English and Welsh. In this day and age can we not simply have the choice, tick a box to say you want it only in Welsh, it'd be that simple.

Why do we waste so much on electricity, ink and paper on stuff that goes straight in the bin because whichever way you look at it, 50% of those letters aren't read but thrown away straight away. Even inside Wales only about 28% of us speak Welsh and for many of those it won't be their first language.

Languages, like cultures and civilisations, come and go. Why do we get so hung up on preserving things that have largely become irrelevant?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

This maybe for a different thread but i completely agree.

I am not anti the Welsh language but I am completely against the amount of money thrown at trying to support it.

This goes far deeper than duplicating documents, the indirect costs of providing these services and others in the public sector are astronomical.

IMHO the first financial cut after this pandemic needs to be to supporting the language.

I must say I was expecting figures to climb up until about now due to the lag between infection / test / report since we have been in lockdown.

I am nervous though about opening next week especially with so few restrictions. Many places, like those you mention and Swansea, still have very high infection rates and as of Monday have less restrictions than before. Places like Neath - Port Talbot went in to a local lockdown with lower cases than they are coming out of it. It doesn't make sense.

This firebreak was a political move by Drakeford after his boss said the UK needed one. A longer one similar to N.Ireland's would have been far better.

Because of minority rights. It is to make those who speak Welsh feel wanted.
It is absolute madness.

Speaking Welsh or not should have any impact on whether or not you get a job. Even in Caernarvon ,they understand English, mainly to extract money from the English tourists, ironically,so need for the massive industry of enforcing Welsh on kids in the likes of Connah s Quay when they will never use the language at home/work and Bills . The option should be there to be educated in it but ,at end of the day, knowledge learnt is the same in english ,welsh or Urdu.

This thread will now get nasty so Im out.

I hope it doesn't get nasty, there's no need. I see it as relevant at a time when spending on the NHS is so low and we have a pandemic.

Whatever the numbers say now, itwill be differnt 7-10 days after the lockfdown ends. They should at least have levelled off but is that good enough? I've always said the lockdown should be longer. I used the term flip flopping between lockdown and not and as we saw again last night, the pubs and bar were full of people ignoring the rules, having their last shindig for a month (England obviously) every time we come out of a lockdown and have another one there will be those reckless nights. Better to have a long term lockdown, not a full on "everywhere shuts" one but a set of rules that are enforced, a soft lockdown as Merkel called what Germany is doing. Something that allows businesses to stay open as much as possible.
If Wales had done this until December...20th say, maybe we could have had a more normal Christmas? Of course the pubs and bars would need to be under stricter rules during Christmas and New Year and maybe they should be planning that now. If they don't sort out what's happening over the festive period it'll be chaos and the numbers could erupt again.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

So you won't see the results of this fire break until after it happens.

If we lock down longer, you will have people moaning that it's too long. They literally cannot win, can't you see that?

Nope haven't had a drink in the Wern for nearly 10 years, Always the Station.

Short or long lockdown, makes no difference in Swansea with the Student population, I have loads living around me, and they are carrying on as normal, no wonder infections are rocketing

So what is the answer then, if you're not happy with either a short or long one?

It's not just students, there's people of all ages who are completely ignoring the rules. That link i just posted is a tiny example of it. Students don't run that pub do they.

There was a couple of blokes in Tata last week, went for a covid test, then went back to work whilst they waited for their results. Guess what, positive tests.

So, these ads by the WAG, the ones about covid. Why do they not put Welsh subtitles on the English language one? Would that be because all welsh speakers can understand English? If so, why bother with a stupid Welsh language advert?

The Welsh Language Act has places a legal requirement on public bodies, such as the police, local authorities etc to treat the languages equally and literature published in English must also be published in Welsh. Simply placing subtitles wouldn’t cut it. Services also have to be provided both languages, so in theory I could walk in to Neath Port Talbot Council, ask to be dealt with through the medium of Welsh and by law they have comply.

I think Drakers had a difficult call to make. He’s been roasted by some for going with the firebreak and he also copped it for not going soon enough and now not long enough. If he’s gone with the science I’d have no issue with what he’s done, if its because of political posturing then I won’t be happy. Same for Boris, but if rumours are to be believed his advice was to go 6 weeks ago.

I am concerned about the length of the firebreak and I don't think Drakers should have committed to back to normal on Monday if the numbers are still on the up, however the issue around the funding of the furlow until England locked down may have been a factor.

The bottom line with any lockdown or fire break is that people need to obey the rules, if they don’t it causes huge problems and undermines the whole exercise. There are plenty of idiots out there who don’t care and Drakers and Noris need to be prepared to step up to the plate and sort them out. Personally, I’d fine law breakers on the first occasion, second occasion it’s a heavier fine, third occasion they'd be arrested, taken before the Court and be tagged, fourth time would be jail.

Also I know many Welsh speakers, a number of those couldn't read Welsh sufficiently well enough to follow subtitles.

I know of one cwmdeithas ar iaith member who campaigned to complete a national census in Welsh but completed it in English.

There are very few people who can speak, read and write Welsh to a high standard.

I know Welsh speakers who have difficulty reading and writing in Welsh, sadly, I know far more English speakers who have difficulty in reading and writing and are unable to read in 1 language yet alone 2.

I don't know in Wales as a whole most stats are about being able to speak it.

My organisation splits Welsh language ability in to 5 levels from absolutely no knowledge (0) to fluent and being able to read and write (5).

There are very few level 5's, probably less than 10%, and they are mainly based in Gwynedd. My team of 12 have 3 fluent Welsh speakers, which is the minimum required, none of them would be confident to read or write a technical document accurately. Writing is apparently particularly difficult. They'd be a level 3.

The guy who completed a census in English was a first language Welsh speaker and had barely left Ceredigion in his entire life.

Interesting that they "grade" them on their ability to speak / write a language.

Genuine question, do they do that with English speakers as well?
