“Firebreak lockdown” a masterclass in incompetence. 23:33 - Oct 22 with 24956 viewsHighjack

Dr Drakeford and his cronies have really set the bar high on the incompetence stakes on this one.

They have announced tonight that retailers will only be allowed to sell “essential goods” during the 17 day lockdown but they are unable to say what counts as essential or non essential. At the time of writing this there is just over 18 hours to go until these rules come into force. The predictable result is that the entire population of Wales will rush out in the short time that is left and ravage the shelves of anything and everything that could potentially count as non essential. Meanwhile retailers are completely in the dark with just a few hours to go they are blissfully unaware of what they will or won’t be allowed to sell or whether they’ll be allowed to stay open at all.

Absolute idiocy from dippy Drakeford and this cabal of insidiously irrational imbeciles.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Why do they only do it for Welsh and not English.

I'm genuinely interested as I've never come across anything like that before. What industry are you in?

I assume it is because English language ability is a given.

I work in the public sector. This policy results in civil servants being employed because they can speak Welsh and not because they are the best person to do the job.

The irony is that in twenty years working for my organisation, covering Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire I've only ever come across one person who preferred to use Welsh.

The second paragraph highlights one of the big problems. When Sunak refused Drakers request, said it wasn't possible but then did exactly what Drakers had reuested when England announced the lockdown, which was restart/extend furlough payments.

The 3 mainland govts are pushing against each other, it's posturingand it's costing lives. We need one voice to lead us through this but the big problem is that'd be the UK government and even councils in England are rebelling against Bojo.

It leads me to the conclusion we are screwed, we, the UK, will be the worst hit country in Europe.

As per my reply to Chad, spoken English may be a given, but written is a complete different ball game in my experience.

I'm surprised you say that about people from Carms and Ceredigion, we have around 30 directly employed people from down there, and without fail, they will always, always converse in Welsh when speaking to each other, no matter who else is present.

That survey actually says it can't be taken as read because people interested in indy were more likely to complete it.

I look at the WoL regualrly and I never saw that survey, when was it?

The only way to know for sure is to have the debate and the vote.

All these surveys and polls, we saw again with the USA election how reliable they are.

This is the headline for me:

"Yes Cymru's membership has grown from 2,000 members at the start of the year to 14,000 in November". There can be no denying that the movement is gathering pace, especially amongst the younger generation, which is why i have no doubt we will go independent at some point, hopefully I'll still be around to see it.

The survey was on there last week.

Absolutely not reliable, no debate there.

That number though, 14000, it's hardly massive. It's less than 1 in 200 people and when you say young people will drive it remember we have more old than young and as people age their political outlook changes. When todays young are old, will they still believe in Indy?

I can say that from peronal experience because when I was young myself and most of my mates either didn't care or were all for going indy but these days we either don't care or would say no, what a difference 30 years made.

The English language developed out of several root languages, to an extent it was forced on Brittania.
It has also been forced on many other countries, during Empire and all that, it is spoken by around one third of the worlds people.
Welsh isn't even spoken by one third of the Welsh population.

Why are so many people so obsessed with trying to preserve things irrelevant to the modern world? Cultures evolve, languages change, things disappear. It's the way of the world and has always been.

What annoys me about the whole bi-lingual thing is motorway warning signs. They are not bi-lingual, they are sometimes either in Welsh or English and often the English is never there. How can you have a warning sign that most of the motorists can not read.

I'm not bothered about where the English language came from to be honest.

IF the English hadn't suppressed Welsh being taught and spoken, then perhaps you would be speaking it now.

It's nothing to do with being obsessed about trying to preserve our language. But on that token, you will welcome an independent Wales when it comes, because things change and evolve, it's the way of the world.

Welsh is spoken by 20% and then you have the question of which Welsh,That of the North which they is the purest or the south which is pigeon welsh to a Gog.-and this in the poorest country of the UK.
Wrong priorities.

Biggest priority is first getting Welsh schools up to speed and having the kid learn a language that will benefit them if they start a business.

Most useful language now Mandarin,Japanese or Spanish.

When we played Napoli away I stayed in Rome and three people spoke to me in Welsh ... 2 Italians (one had studied Marine Biology in Bangor and decided to learn Welsh to get the most of his experience the other because he'd heard rugby supporters speaking Welsh and decided to find out more) and a Norwegian who worked for a brewing company in Llanelli for three years (we also chatted in Swedish and he spoke 4 other languages fluently.
Only monoglot English speakers have problem with other languages.
I have never seen Welsh only signs on motorways but have seen English only ones.
TBH peole who don't speak the language or even rcognise basic signage of their own nation are just sad or happy to be oppressed.

I will welcome change if it's for the better. I just don't see how it's better to force the survivla of a minority language when our schools are alreadystruggling to efucate. My son is 12 years old and just started secondary, his primary school hadn't even taught him how to work out the volume of a basic object. They were too busy telling him brexit was bad and Trump was a loony.
Then we haven't got A&E's that can cope and regualrly have ambulances queueing up outside them. We don;'t have enough police. Our roads are poor. Our fire services have been cut.
There's always enough money for political pet projects though, and political ideology. There's also always money for politicians to have pay rises.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Some will say independence will be for the better, others will say the opposite. Exactly the same as any big change out there.

I'm not sure what your sons schooling has to do with the Welsh language? Have you complained to them? How is it being forced anyway? Has your son been forced to go to a Welsh medium school? That's a rhetorical question. I'm just glad to see more and more Welsh schools being built, especially in areas that never had one before, bodes well for the future.

Okay, let's say we scrap all the bi-lingual letters / signage etc. Do you think the money saved will be spent on better policing, or more hospitals? Of course they won't, so to mention them as if they would, is just silly. Why do England have all those same problems, and they only speak / use one language.

Welsh isn't a political pet project.

What absolute shyte.
Oppressed?Just take a step back from your defensive position.

Your rales are apocraphal.

I can append countless tales of instances where Welsh is seen a a pain. It is a nice novelty to foreigner but if you are in Business then English will be the language.

Nothing but nothing disprove the fact which is Welsh is by far a minority language .Like it or not,it will always be the case.

It is so because south Wales took in many immigrants to work in our old industries .These spoke mainly English.
In the north and west ,less industry ,less welsh.
