What gives them the right to think they should jump the queue on a vaccine?

Whilst they have been sat on their arse's for a 12 month getting full pay, a lot of us have been out working, others have lost their jobs or have been on 80% pay..

How about the volunteered to work some Saturday mornings or gave up some of their holidays to help kids catch up on their education.

Even if the assembly sanction schools staying open, I am not sure it would be enforceable. Teachers, like many occupations have contracts of employment with detailed terms and conditions, I don’t think this would get past first base. I can’t see lots of parents who want a holiday being happy either.

I am sure the NHS employees had contracts as well but they rose to the challenge and worked extra hours, changed duties all to help out and their unions supported this.

Pity the teaching unions do not take into account what is needed for the country during this emergency.

A couple of observations.

Teachers routinely work extra hours every day of every week of every year irrespective of whether there is a national emergency or not so I'm not sure that helps your argument.

There are many examples of teachers and schools supporting families during this crisis doing things which are not in their contracts so you are ill informed on that point.

The idea that teachers have not risen to the challenge whilst NHS workers have, is not worthy of debate but it does highlight the prevalent trend, supported by certain aspects of the media, to try play off different groups of people against each other. Most reasonable people can see through this, others less so.

As is the case of police officers now being refused to be seen as priority.

Can’t think of a bigger priority myself as minus them lie s anarchy.

Police Service has been treated with contempt by successive governments all of who should be ashamed as these people give them the country to manage

Some on here are assuming that keeping schools open over the summer is the answer. It’s far more complex than that.

What’s definitely true is that there’s a myriad of of more efficient and cost effective ways of kids catching up academically. If you want to beat the drum for summer schools because you want punish teachers because of your perception of what we’ve been doing over the last 12 months, then knock yourself out.

Don’t pretend it’s for the children’s benefit, it’s not. Schools have been allocated £700 million (sounds a lot of money but compare it to the £849 million spent on Eat out to Help Out) of catch premium funding. We’ll be accountable for the spend. We won’t (in the main) spend it on summer schools as the research doesn’t support it. I’d be on board if it did.

To give a bit of context, summer schools operating as ‘normal school’ would would accelerate children’s leaning by 2+ months. Small group intensive tutoring over the same period would lead to 8+ months on average. I’ll be doing that as part of my catch up offer, along with some other proven methods.

Most of us don't have the responsibility of teaching the next generation.

The option of being a teacher was open to you.
Why are you so bitter ?

Did a teacher run off with your boyfriend or something ?

I don’t agree with virtually all of what is posted on here by Felixstowe.

But what’s the snidey homophobia about?

It’s amazing how quickly some resort to it despite public protestations about their inclusivity.

Pathetic.

I vowed to stay off this thread as I'm emotionally involved due to the FACTS I see everyday and have done for the last 12mths. However there are a couple of complete c@nts on this thread and you can just go f@ck yourselves as you are ignoring any counter arguments of people who know from bitter experience what is actually going on.
Apologies for the profanities but I'm seething, so congrats if your on a wind up because you've got me hook line and sinker.

Another rabid offensive remark from you. I won't report your comments as a hate crime this time although the board administrator may.

If you can't make your points with sensible arguments then it is probably better not to post at all

Some much for the nasty comments that even corbyn said must end . The left yet again show themselves to be the true nasty party.

An interesting comments from professor van tan in todays briefing teachers have one of the lowest death rates of all occupations and less than half that of the general population for the same age profile.

It’s incredibly difficult to work out how to prioritise people. I can’t help but think that the only way of doing it is based on an assessment of risk. But what ‘risk’ means is the crucial bit.

I can’t see anyway to treat risk other than the risk of serious illness, hospitalisation and death. That is very different to the disk of infection.
Teachers will have, presumably, a higher rate of infection that many others due to contact with large numbers of kids. The jury appears to still be out on small kids, but certainly older secondary school kids must be able to pass on the virus to adults. But they will have no more risk of that infection developing into a serious illness. Those that are at more risk are being prioritised anyway due to age and / or underlying health issues.

If we treat teachers as a special case, what about supermarket workers, who are performing an equally important function. More important in some ways, as the kids CAN (not ideal) study online but there is simply not the infrastructure available to allow everyone to get food online. And there are the emergency services as well. And emergency plumbers. And delivery drivers. And the post office. And it goes on and on.

The only real argument I could see for teachers being prioritised outside the age and health groups, is if it will genuinely make a difference in keeping schools open. And I don’t think there’s much evidence that schools were having to shut in huge numbers due to teacher absences previously. Most shut downs were because of outbreaks in kids’ cohorts.

Aside from all that, so ,any people from so many professions have been working their arses off in extraordinary circumstances. None of them deserve this sniping. Nor do any of those who are desperate to get back to work because they don’t have income unless they do. They don’t deserve constant criticism from those who want to stay locked up for ever (often those who have their income unaffected).

People are becoming real gits over this, more than usual. Have some bloody empathy.

It was not a misplaced assertion.

His post was homophobic. Whether or not it’s out of character is irrelevant.

It being throwaway is the problem. It’s the sort of ‘jibe’ an unthinking child makes. Underlying the comment is a belief that pretending a male poster has a boyfriend is somehow a way of getting at him. It’s saying someone being gay is somehow ‘worse’ and worthy of derision.

Simple as that.
