That means a lot of Blackburn folk follow their local side, and clearly some of them twice. There is no other explanation. Holland’s pies is the towns biggest exporter, in a hundred years back, or less, they used to export cotton ( not Holland’s pies ) to the world, then one eyed Joe got annoyed and it all went south. It shouldn’t ever be said that Blackburn people are thick, other than all of them mostly are really intelligent. They came second in the UK’s most intelligent town in 2017. Blackburn are on the absolute edges of their squad in terms of availability and options mind. And they should have scored at least two more if not three. I suspect Martin will not be as encouraged. He was going mad towards the end shouting at players. We need some serious incomings if this is going to work.

Agree with that. This Blackburn team will be lucky to get near midtable. This was a big opportunity with the issues they have.

Agree think we are 3/4 players short at least but some encouragement in style & thought Benda (2nd goal aside) looked decent.

Benda was a big positive in my opinion. His positioning was suspect in last week’s friendly, but he stood up well today and showed good command of his box. Everyone can make a mistake so no problems with that. He needs a sustained run to really make the position his own.

Giving up 21 shots despite having 71% of the ball is bananas really, especially when most of them were through our own shortcomings as opposed to them carving them out with good play. We have players that are simply not ball players. They are limited. As such, when put under duress in a pressing situation, they are just as likely to give it to the opposition as they are to give it to us. And considering much of our play is in our own half, when that does occur they are often already in a dangerous area. Blackburn are no great shakes as you say and fully expect them to be a bottom half side, and at times it looked as if they were a league above us, that first 10 mins was horrific for example. It will get better, but don’t think the ceiling of achievement is there or high enough to justify persisting unless we bring in players that can excel in this style, and not sure how much scope we have to do that. No issue with the manager. No issue with the players. We just aren’t good enough. [Post edited 7 Aug 2021 17:52]

This was the absolute best time to play us as well. The manager hasn’t had a pre season and we’ve got some loan players hopefully arriving in the week. Blackburn would have been delighted to play us at home today. We were a shambles at times, I’m confident we’ll sort that out with an injection of quality and a bit of time. We had one or two starting who should be on the bench at best today. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| Matchday Thread : Blackburn Rovers v Swansea City 21/22 on 16:34 - Aug 7 by londonlisa2001 | I also don’t understand playing three at the back in a ‘passing’ game. By definition, you are giving up a midfielder for a back, and usually that’s a reduction in on the ball ability. Plus your wide players are further back. I’m a fan of 451 to be honest. With pace on the flanks. And a creative number 10. |
I don’t think that works with Cabango and Bennett. Ideally you want one physical ball winner and two who are more comfortable in possession either side of him. If you’ve got two of the back three who can carry the ball into midfield and drift wide to cover the wing back where necessary, it does allow you to play more. We’ve been a bit spoilt in that regard as Rodon and Guehi could do both. Naughton can play that role if Laird comes in or when Roberts comes back. I’m not convinced by Latabaudiere yet, his passing wasn’t great today and he’s never really impressed me. I don’t know enough about Brandon Cooper. I think I’d agree, 451 with Cabango and Bennet as orthodox centre backs would probably suit us better at the moment, though it would mean the fullbacks reigning it in a bit. We’ve certainly got enough winger/forward hybrids to play with width and goal threat.

| Matchday Thread : Blackburn Rovers v Swansea City 21/22 on 17:03 - Aug 7 by jasper_T | Two bad mistakes in quick succession cost us a goal, but he also bailed out some players who made more howlers than him today with decent saves. Paterson was better second half but not sure what their keeper was trying to do for his goal. Jumped right out of the way of it. Subs needed earlier, Cullen wasn't in the game at all. Lowe looked out of puff and patience before the hour. Latibeaudiere just not good enough. |
Cullen did well. He chased hard and on another day would have had a brace.

Chased hard because he wasn't first to anything. When you're a pure poacher who doesn't help your team get up the pitch then you need to score one of your chances to have done well unfortunately. Fingers crossed Piroe is an upgrade, physically he's more of a presence and showed some good touches in preseason. We should look better once Naughton can drop into the back three. Just the midfield then, a second player who wants the ball would improve things dramatically. [Post edited 7 Aug 2021 18:05]

Still harsh on Cullen / I thought his more experienced partner was totally anonymous and if anyone deserves criticism. I agree about the makeup of the back 3 today but beggars unfortunately couldn’t be choosers. Naughton would certainly bring a better balance. As for the midfield - second half we were much improved - Grimes seemed to have more time and used it well, Patterson came more and more into the game and took his goal well. Smith certainly needs to produce more though on this evidence. Our problem today was getting the ball from the back four into midfield because when we did we looked quite dangerous. Its the first game together for a few of these players and we are still recruiting. Let’s see how things are at the end of August.

Yeah. Cullen looks like an OK "Fox in the box" type but we'll need more than that in this system. With Naughton in the back three things should be solid enough, but we were crying out for someone else in midfield to make themselves available for a pass. I liked how comfortable Lowe looked in possession. With a bit more quality alongside him that should work quite well. I'll stick with what I said at HT. It was massively encouraging to see how quickly we wanted to move the ball around compared to what we've become used to. It'll take time to get things in tune but we've got that. Sadly a minority of our support (plus some random trolls) were fully behind the Ponty Goblin and won't hesitate to tediously argue as to why we should have stuck with a proven failure* as a manager instead of trying to improve. *(c) Simon Jordan

He’ll be back in the middle for Sheffield United if we get Laird over the line. In a back three he’s fine, as a fullback he’s fine. Wingback isn’t his game.

Laird's only had 45 minutes on the grass all summer, maybe a bit soon to be thrown straight in? The system could look quite different with a wingback willing to take on his man, which Martin's MK Dons had on both sides. Not going to get that from Bidwell or Naughton or Roberts.

Could be, but we need Naughton in the three if we’re going to play like this. May even sign in time for another 45 against Reading? I know what you mean. Roberts will take his man on with athleticism, but won’t run at him one on one. I hope we don’t fall into the trap of playing wingers there.

I agree but not good enough either is cabango in this system we need balm playing centre halves who are comfortable on ball naughtiness as a wing back is a joke useless getting forward can't defebt and distribution is a joke...I just being honest Lowe runs with ball with head down no idea what's around him runs until he loses it don't get his head up to play pass or a one two just runs and runs out space.. not being critical but honest. Half our team not good enough for this league
| Matchday Thread : Blackburn Rovers v Swansea City 21/22 on 20:05 - Aug 7 with 1018 views | Dr_Winston | By no stretch of the imagination was Garry Monk a "ball playing centre half" but given competent coaching he did just fine. These players have just spent two years doing the opposite of what Russell Martin wants them to. It will take time to bed the system in. If come December they're still crapping themselves when they've got the ball to feet then fine, it's time to worry. Otherwise chill. | |
