Blackburn facts,figures and triggers

Blackburn is such a small place that more than the amount of people that live there follow the club. That means a lot of Blackburn folk follow their local side, and clearly some of them twice. There is no other explanation. Holland’s pies is the towns biggest exporter, in a hundred years back, or less, they used to export cotton ( not Holland’s pies ) to the world, then one eyed Joe got annoyed and it all went south. Not literally, nothing goes south from Blackburn as we have seen with their away supports over the years at Swansea. It shouldn’t ever be said that Blackburn people are thick, other than all of them mostly are really intelligent. They came second in the UK’s most intelligent town in 2017. This was an incredible achievement for them as they were the only town to enter. Thick or what ?

Everyone born in Blackburn has no toenails.

Benda was brilliant, he is more than up to the task beside his gift of a penalty to them, Whittaker should have had the entire second half, Korey Smith seemed to be out of sorts for some bizarre reason, there was far too many backward passes for my liking but this has been going on for longer than i can remember, i do remember that Naughton has 10 other players to try and pass to but chose to pass to the keeper which pissed me off no end, it might just be my eternal optimism but i think we looked more creative in the second half, onward and upward

By no stretch of the imagination was Garry Monk a "ball playing centre half" but given competent coaching he did just fine.

These players have just spent two years doing the opposite of what Russell Martin wants them to. It will take time to bed the system in. If come December they're still crapping themselves when they've got the ball to feet then fine, it's time to worry. Otherwise chill.

If you can't be comfy on the ball at 29or 21 you never will be no matter what Russell tries teach them it's horses for courses cabango is a solid centre half but never will be a ball carrying centre half as for naughton he will never be a wing back who gets forward delivering crosses or a full back who can come deep get ball and start moves.as he ain't just got it we need change our personnel big time

I think that we are going to pick up a lot of cards at centre back and central midfield until this system beds in.

.

Some harsh criticisms of our players who are desperate to impress our new Ruthless Russell.

They've been asked to make gargantuan steps up in pace, bravery, go-forward. All in a heartbeat.

Encouraging to see Martin cut his cloth in the second half, with Grimes taking the tiller to wrest control - however from far too deep to hurt and propel us forward.

Exciting times.

Let's hope (some of our internet) fickle fans give him and our players the breathing space they need to grow and flourish.

This passing is atrocious.

You have to have the right technical players that can play this way, under pressure, to a man. That’s why it’s so difficult for the majority of teams to do successfully. I’m not convinced we have the personnel.

The one positive for me so far is Benda. Nice to have a brave and commanding keeper.

It will take quite a few windows for Martin to get his team right. Only 4 or 5 of the present squad will be good enough for his pass and control game.

I agree but not good enough either is cabango in this system we need balm playing centre halves who are comfortable on ball naughtiness as a wing back is a joke useless getting forward can't defebt and distribution is a joke...I just being honest Lowe runs with ball with head down no idea what's around him runs until he loses it don't get his head up to play pass or a one two just runs and runs out space.. not being critical but honest. Half our team not good enough for this league

He won’t be there for long. As soon as we get Laird or someone else in, he’ll be in the three. I agree, wingback doesn’t suit him at all. Paterson went straight in and we had a very inexperienced bench.

Your last sentence is a salient point. I’m yet to be convinced by Smith or Latabaudiere. Dhanda has the talent, but hasn’t made the most of it yet.

We looked exactly like we are, a team who has lost a couple of big players, trying to get used to a new manager and a new playing style without a pre season (tactics wise not fitness wise).

We were makeshift today. I’m confident that with a couple of additions and a few games for the players to get used to Martin and vice versa, we won’t look anything like as sloppy or disconnected.

You're right re Cabango. A stopper not a player (one though ball excepted). No doubt someone (from the lands not good) will throw some stats saying how amazing he is, but in reality he is our (2nd) weakest link in playing from the back.

We need an overhaul - starting from the back. Benda is a great start. More is now in the pipeline we hear .....

He’s fine in this system, so is Bennett. Playing them both together is the issue. Ideally you want one stopper and two more versatile defenders who aren’t as strong, or tall, or physically dominant, but can step into midfield, receive the ball in tight situations and cover the wingbacks when they’ve gone forward.

I agree, we need at least one ‘utility defender’, or for Latibeaudiere to step up a bit.

Why would you pose the question about a week after the guy got the job?

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Benda was awful first goal through his legs and what on earth was he up too for the second goal. Terrible ball control and then a needless penalty. If woodman had done that he would have been crucified.

3 out of 10 will need to show a vast improvement.

For the avoidance of doubt, the overall overhaul is if Martin sticks to his guns to play Martinball. Or whether he continues to cut his cloth in the way he did 2nd half - to suit the players we have in order to get a result.

Much like Cooper did, cutting his cloth to get the very best out the resources available.

Yes bit Cooper chose a lot of his resources. Martin has only been in the job barely a week and is missing two good senior professionals. I think we’ll be on the right track come the end of the window

Benda will seriously benefit from ‘not being Woodman’ on here. I don’t know if the players read the site, but if they do that’s a good thing.

The penalty incident was worse than anything Woodman did in two years. You’re right, if Woodman did that in an otherwise good game, he’d be slaughtered.

It was an isolated incident though and other than that and a spill from a weak shot in the first half, I thought he had a very good game. We have to account for him having a lot less protection than Woodman enjoyed.

Benda kept us in the game, by looks of it.

Doesn’t matter if they are professional footballers, doesn’t mean they are excellent in every department.

The likes of Bennett isn’t a professional footballer because of his composure, his passing range and ability and vision. He’s a professional footballer because he’s decent in the air, strong in the tackle and dependable.

Telling him to be composed and telling him to ping passes around the back isn’t going to magically mean that he can. Not only can, but can to a sufficient level over 90 mins that we do it better than the opposition does theirs, probably more in a style that suits their players.

It’s not about tactics, it’s about ability.

I do agree that there are some prfessional players who are unable to do it, but they should be few and far between.
Some may take longer to get the hang of it than others, and some may not be able to ever do it, but those are the ones that need to be replaced. I truly don't believe that be many of them.

Lati was very poor yesterday and a player who is yet to break into senior football is a much bigger risk in being able to adapt than a seasoned pro like Bennett IMO.
Bennet has played in the prem for more than one team. He's been promoted from this division twice and played hundreds of times. He wouldn't have got to that level if he couldn't pass, Shirley?
Just a case of getting into practice and building confidence in it I suggest.

Giving up 21 shots despite having 71% of the ball is bananas really, especially when most of them were through our own shortcomings as opposed to them carving them out with good play.

We have players that are simply not ball players. They are limited. As such, when put under duress in a pressing situation, they are just as likely to give it to the opposition as they are to give it to us. And considering much of our play is in our own half, when that does occur they are often already in a dangerous area.

Blackburn are no great shakes as you say and fully expect them to be a bottom half side, and at times it looked as if they were a league above us, that first 10 mins was horrific for example.

It will get better, but don’t think the ceiling of achievement is there or high enough to justify persisting unless we bring in players that can excel in this style, and not sure how much scope we have to do that.

No issue with the manager. No issue with the players. We just aren’t good enough.
[Post edited 7 Aug 2021 17:52]

Well we are going to persist, justifiable or not...
We aren't going to bring in a raft of players, so our boys better get practicing.

It will be a work in progress for some time, but the more we persist, the better we will become.
