It’s a job the french should be doing anyway. We shouldn’t be paying them for something they are legally obliged to do under french law, EU law and international law. It’s a complete abdication of responsibility. It’s a political will issue. If the French and EU in general cared half as much about migrant people wandering all over the continent unchecked as they do about rogue sausages and chlorinated chicken crossing the Irish Sea then we wouldn’t be in half this mess. |  | | |

Migration is amongst the biggest challenges facing the government because there isn’t an easy solution. It’s an issue that’s received a lot of publicity over the years and there’s been a lot of strong words from politicians, but meaningful action producing tangible results i.e. reduced levels of crossings has been non existent because the numbers crossing are now higher than ever.
Priti Patel is giving the French £50 odd million to address the issue but the numbers crossing are higher than ever. It may be that the French are doing a good job and stopping thousands of attempted crossings per day and that we’re seeing is what they can’t cope with, but I doubt that and I’d say their efforts are merely token gestures.
The only way to stop the migration is to make it so unattractive to come to the UK people don’t bother, however that’s going to need some pretty draconian measures.
France doesn’t want to discuss migration matters with the U.K. because they believe it’s an EU issue and I’d suggest given the current UK - EU relationship they won’t be queuing up to do Boris any favours. | | | |

The arguments regarding immigration around brexit were more to do with legal immigration. Citizens of the EU were free to come here and work freely. This led to a situation where Eastern Europeans who were willing to do the same job for a lot less than British workers often usurped them which of course is perfectly fair in a free market capitalist economy but also quite understandably pissed a lot of British workers off.
This migrant dinghy issue is based entirely around illegal immigration and people trafficking. These are the people from outside the European Union who wouldn’t have been allowed in anyway and is an issue predating brexit and largely unaffected by it apart from the withdrawal from the Dublin regulation which nobody seems to be following anyway. | | | |
