I sincerely doubt it. In a few months time we'll be seeing this argument again. I wonder how much more money we had to give them? That story says maritime law prevents an intervention once they are in the sea. I bet it doesn't say ignore them if they're in trouble though. Most of these boats aren't seaworthy enough to go 20 feet from the shore, as soon as they hit choppy water they are at risk and the sea lane is quite choppy, specially when container ships are passing.

Does anyone think this government is talking tough but turning a blind eye to replace the slave Labour we no longer get from the EU?

Not sure what "slave " labour you meant by that post. I'm guessing with the odd exception to Romanian car washers and Chinese nail polishers (not EU by the way ) the majority of EU workers who worked here came on their own volition .

Yes true. But even the minimum wage here was still far more than they were earning back home. Slave wages to us wouldn’t have seemed so to them.

and one of the reasons so many Poles for example returned " home " was that the standard of living in Poland had improved making it financial sense to return and boost their own economies "Some 70% of respondents who have returned to Poland since 2015 said that Brexit did not play a role in their decision, says Olga Czeranowska, a researcher at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw who is currently conducting a study on Polish and Lithuanian returnees from the UK. Although Poles are the second largest foreign-born population in the UK, with recent figures showing that they have lodged more than a million applications to the EU Settlement Scheme, there is no doubt that many have returned to Poland in the five years since the referendum."

All arrivals would be flown to a camp in Albania where their claims would be processed. Significant costs reportedly incurred, but an Interesting development.

Perhaps they could be sent to France to build a fence on the French beaches to stop illegal immigrants leaving the EU.

| Migrants getting in to the U.K. more than ever before on 08:38 - Nov 13 by controversial_jack | The vast majority do. We get just a tiny percentage coming here compared to what other countries have taken in. Beats me why they want to come here. Many European countries have better benefit systems and more opportunities than this country, unless, as someone posted, it's the English language or they may have families or friends here. |
Correct cj. Far more stop in Germany, for example, afaik. Far more. With reference to the migrants, some posters on here tell us all the time about the benefits of having left the EU, of which there are certainly some. I was reminded on Question Time last night of one of the negatives. While we were part of the EU, if a migrant arrived in the UK from another EU country we were allowed by EU law to send them straight back to that other EU country. So the vast bulk of the 20,000 plus that have arrived this year could have been easily sorted. But of course we can't do it any more because we're not in the EU. So in dealing with the problem we are trying to sort out the problem through UK law (which people voted for) as compared with how we used to do it through EU law (which people voted against).

Only it is not true . Once a migrant has reached the EU they are able to freely move anywhere in the EU due to EU freedom of movement laws. As an example France does not send its migrants back to other EU countries even though will have entered the EU via Italy, Greece Spain.

EU countries are able to request a migrant be transferred to the state they entered into the EU to be processed under the Dublin regulation. But this has always been inefficient and controversial since day 1 as the border states don’t want them back and very often don’t have the means to house them adequately so the vast majority of requests are turned down. I believe that I read the figure for the uk was only 7% of requests accepted so it is incorrect to say the vast bulk of the 20,000 plus could easily have been sorted. In reality nothing has changed. Actually it is true, under the terms of the Dublin agreement migrants could be sent back to the country they entered in as FZ has outlined in his post. There may be practical difficulties and Schengen allows free movement, but the legislation exists to enabling EU countries to return migrants to the country where they entered the EU. Now, we are outside the scope of the Dublin agreement and have to receive them until such time as their cases are determined.

It's far to late for actions on immigrants, with winter approaching, the conditions in the channel will become more and more dangerous and will surely cost more of these poor peoples lives, we should lift all restrictions and start a legal ferry service from Calais to Dover without delay.

As long as those of us fed up of this country can get on the return leg. I might go to Sweden, I hear the girls are hot there.

Radio 4 pm had an interesting report from a BBC reporter who had been to the migrant camps in Calais, apparently the French police have been clearing camps taking away tents, sleeping bags, food etc. Leaving people with nothing. The UK and French government need to get their acts together.

Should they be punished or are they simply providing a service . Not unlike Ryanair.

They’re probably providing a better service. Ryanair would tell them they’re going to Dover but then drop them off about a hundred miles up the coast.

Because it will save lives. Isn't that more important than stopping a few here and there and having 20-30 or more die? We have a deal with France on this issue but yesterday there was a picture of immigrants carrying a boat to the sea while French police sat in their car, watching. We should establish a safe route then bombard these camps with that information. We need to stop the traffickers too. Find them, take their ill gotten gains and lock them up. I'm fed up of the stories of people dying, children dying. It's wrong.

I have flown with them and they were fine. No frills, their booking system is crap and they catch you for extras, but they are budget so what do we expect. I can't stand him though.
| Migrants getting in to the U.K. more than ever before on 16:42 - Nov 25 with 656 views | Kilkennyjack | The UK should provide a safe passage route and get after the gangs. The threats to stop people in the water always had an inevitable outcome. UK government should be ashamed of their actions. | |
