Jamie Paterson explored and his immediate future at Swansea City 2nd Feb 2022 17:21
Despite ‘not playing‘ for fifty plus days and with limited training opportunities Jamie Paterson is about to be welcomed back in to Russell Martin’s first team plans with Blackburn Rovers in mind. It most certainly isn’t a surprise that this is in Martin’s mind, but what exactly is going on in Paterson’s has to be of some concern. And of course who is still influencing him negatively. 0

When one grieves, for example ,one is not mentally ill, just profoundly ad and that is normal.

If we dont get a job we want with the salary required we are not mentally ill.

When children throw a tantrum because they cant get what their want, they too are not mentally ill. This is a serious life threatening condition and should be used very carefully

I feel mental health ,in many cases,(and Im not refering to Paterson 0 is used inappropriately.

Reading this article makes me feel very very uneasy but I had to comment.

The way i see it Pato only has to perform. Whether he is under strain and troubled in some way or simply a mercenary buffoon I do not care very much as a fan. Obviously I want him to be healthy in that respect.

All he has to do is give his best performances in the sacred white shirt until the Summer when everything can be reviewed. This includes play offs and any Covid inspired extensions. (A full season).

This is a moral position. What some Bournemouth players did in not extending to cover the extension was disgraceful. Lyle Taylor did the same I recall. Bombed ever since.

As a manager I think RM would have given Pato his better terms....so he's not to blame. I've always said that Pato had a case...a big case...for an upgrade.
Hindsight is a great thing but I think we should have thrown a bit of money at Pato...not a lot...but enough to get him (and his idiot agent) onside.
Look... we have missed him. I'm glad he is back and we can move on....

As a massive fan of BerkamPaterson, I am chuffed he's still with us, in so many ways ;-)

Like Martin, we need to get behind him and will him on to kick on and surpass his massive achievements to date in a Swansea shirt.

Goals and assists are a rare commodity this term, esp right now.

Let's hope our 'new signing' gets the golden honeymoon period we need.

Hang on now, he didn't refuse to play, he was ill physically and mentally? In which case why was Martin disappointed and hurt by it?

martin has been playing silly games after some really poor advice, as the window proved, nobody else really wanted him unless it was dirt cheap and we value him more. he should think on that.

Keith, that part about the saying, I did just that, I ejected people who only dragged me down and my life is 1000 times better for it so maybe Pato needs to try it too. Maybe he should also consider himself lucky to still have gotten his full pay during all this. One thing I know for sure, if I refused to turn in for work because my head wasn't in the right place, if I didn't have a doctors support there I'd be in trouble, did a doctor back Pato up?

What recourse do we have if he remains "mentally and physically ill" and doesn't play for us again? Surely we are not going to keep paying him for all his contract? At some point we need to do something about this if he isn't fit enough to play.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

If he thinks he is "not in the right frame of mind to play" then he should see how he is feeling up on Mynydd Newydd on a freezing Saturday morning when it's lashing it down with rain.
When you've had a few the night before but you still have to stick your boots on because your mates will be 1 short if you don't.
Not in the right frame because you didn't get a few grand extra each week. Not playing isn't going to help is it. No ones going to sign him up in the summer on big money if he hasn't played for 6 months

The club have been soft over this.

If there was any way of cancelling his extension I’d do it and telling him he’d be training with the kids til June and fark him off. He’s living a good life and playing for a club we’d all have done anything to wear the shirt for - nobody wanted him bar us. There’s nothing wrong with his head - he’s forgotten just how lucky he is to do what he’s doing.

He should take a look around the championship and see just how many clubs are in the mire financially. Get into the real world ffs.

Whatever the situation was, and we will never know what really happened, he is still our player, he is a good player and he is of benefit to us. He scores goal, is creative and when his head is on, can win us games.
Money is irrelevant in terms of mental health, and if he has been suffering, like we have been told (there is no reason not to believe it) then he needs to be supported. If he is and he gets back into it, it can only benefit us. Fans booing him, not playing him will only harm us.

Many of us have done stupid things at work that we may regret, or had our heads turned by a another person or head hunter only to realise we've made a mistake.

To us Swansea is our passion, to the players, and manager it is a job and they're looking at the best opportunity, as we do when we looking at career opportunities. Sometimes it is hard to separate the two.

Been there bought the tee shirt.
It is easy to be wise after the event, but at the time when someone tells you you are the bees knees, it is all too easy t believe it.
Pato, Martin and the club have all made mistakes.
Also if Pato is suffering or has suffered from some form of mental illness then he has my sympathies.
Best thing for all concerned is to draw a line under it and get him back playing

Mental illness that is only brought on the day you don't get a pay rise?
What is the exact clinical name for that one?
Many millions of people do suffer from mental illness. There are harrowing stories from many sufferers. The more it is used to cover for things the more it insults the suffering of those who have it.
Maybe he does suffer from it. If that is the case then I would very much doubt that the end of the transfer window would make much difference

Good people are suffering out there with full on mental illness.People need to speak to professionals about it.
It does not include selfish, sulking footballers unable to cream what they want from their employers.
Ironically the very people who deal with mental illness have only recently had a pay rise and nothing like that which cretins like Paterson DEMAND.Or they dont play.

We also see the use of mental health a a pejorative on many forums including ours aimed at people who have a different view.

Martin says Pato is a "fantastic" person. That fantastic he reckons he ha mental health issues Martin either turns your stomach or he doesn't.

Money is no bar to mental illness. Some of the, outwardly, happiest, go lucky people suffer from depression. Sometimes a person could, on the face of it, have a great, successful career with a lovely family but are deeply troubled by their problems.

Gary Speed is a prime example of this. It's really unfair to label someone greedy or using a mental health card when we know nothing about the person.

He may be swinging the lead, he may be genuine. The point is we do not know. The club, as his employers owe him a duty of care, which is what they are doing. If he raises mental health issues and the club say 'do you, go and train in the reserves' he could sue for constructive dismissal. RM has played this perfectly.

Unsure where this talk of mental illness has come from?

Isn’t it the same as when Gylfi said he wasn’t in the right frame of mind to go on tour because Everton wanted him and he didn’t want to play?

That wasn’t mental illness. That’s him wanting to move and not being focussed on the job at hand as a result.

How can an example of a totally different person, not in anyway connected be used as any proof whatsoever of whether another person many years later does not have mental health ? I have no idea if he has or not, but slamming a person on a forum of whom we know nothing about is not fair.

I never said it was a bar to mental illness, neither did Pawel, he just suggested that it was coincidental that his mental health surfaced at the exact time his agent was trying to improve his contract.

Maybe he has a history of previous mental health issues, if so I apologise, but If he is using mental health as an excuse to engineer a move or to gain an improved contract, then I think that's awful, and shows little respect to those that suffer from an illness that blights so many lives, young, old, rich or poor, that's why I'm with Pawel.

Where has it come from was the question.

Not being in the right frame of mind to play due to being annoyed at a contract dispute isn’t mental illness. We have seen that before at this club and at other clubs, it can’t be described as mental illness.

If he genuinely has a mental illness then that’s extremely serious, but I’m not seeing where that has come from unless I’m missing something.

What I took from Martin’s comments was him downplaying Paterson’s refusal to play by stating he didn’t refuse but didn’t feel in a good place to play due to external issues (contract dispute).

Suggesting that it wasn’t a spiteful decision by Paterson but one in which he was looking out for his teammates because he couldn’t focus on his job due to the poor advice he was given.

Essentially paving the way for him to come back now he didn’t get his move which we are going to allow because without him we look pretty rubbish.

I think you need to reflect on that.

Nobody knows his upbringing or situation before last month. Nobody has any idea as to how he feels and why. Any form mental health can arise at any time wether that be personal circumstances or personal experiences. PTSD frowned upon by the services and police saw many people take their lives as a result of their experiences. Men are three times more likely to commit suicide than women.

Cognitively he clearly hasn’t been able to function or deliver his practical skills. These days there has to be a more practical approach to a person who for whatever reason breaks down and cannot function. To say that isn’t a mental welfare issue is ridiculous, and totally ignorant to the well being of people who temporarily or permanently cannot manage their day to day lives.

It isn’t a common cold.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.
