Swansea City to allow Russell Martin more time ? 10th Aug 2022 11:44
Swansea City will not be pressing the panic button just yet after three games of the new season. Last nights defeat on penalties after throwing away a two nil lead will not detract from the bigger picture that Russell Martin continues to stand by. Three games should never be the basis for that. 0

Swansea City to allow Russell Martin more time ? on 17:05 - Aug 11 by magicdaps10

Going to point the errors of this post in the right direction.

Fulton miss controls, his body shape is all wrong and the touch his too heavy and he sets the attacker up.
Fulton attempts the toe poke tackle that would ultimately play the ball across to a fellow defender....this was not him playing a sideways pass but ultimately making a tackle due to his extremely poor touch.

THERE IS NO WAY AT ANY LEVEL SHOULD A PLAYER BEING MAKING SUCH A POOR TOUCH.

The pass by Grimes ultimetly should be played into Fultons left side, the side Fulton is moving towards and the ball then gets played easily to Darling who then looks to set sn attack down the left side.

GRIMES PLAYS THE WRONG PASS TOWARDS THE RIGHT SIDE OF FULTON, THE PASS SHOULD BE GOING TO FULTONS LEFT GIVING HIM SPACE.

Ultimately these are 2 terrible individual errors that these players should be understanding and will most certainly have been pointed out to them in the match analysis on Monday just gone.

I can't defend the 1st Oxford goal in the week but that first goal we conceded on the weekend just sets the standard, 2 individual mistakes that have nothing to do with the "style". These mistakes then get us to start chasing the game and that's never a good thing.

The 1st goal in midweek is undefendable and just needs to be played down the right by Wood, the guy is young and clearly learning but his mistake was ultimately the energy that was needed to get Oxford going.

Some big things going on the next few weeks so it seems.....Right wing back is moving on quick and a creative spark is now very much needed.

Anyone ask if Leeds want a striker 😬

Excellent analysis and my thoughts exactly. As much as I blamed Fulton, you are right that Grimes has to shoulder some of the blame. His pass appreciation is generally pretty poor.

Let's not forget, these are professional footballers who aren't new to this level. And that's ALL they do, day-in day-out is analyse, practice, play, analyse, rinse, repeat .... nothing else. They are either slow of thinking or slow of learning - neither of which is good. We should expect better (I was going to say "deserve", but we don't "deserve" anything).

Harsh. I've been a fan of Fulton's over the last few years when others were slagging him off. He's a good passer normally and loves a tackle. But I don't ever want to see him playing square balls as the last man. We've given plenty of goals away over the last year but it's normally players doing stupid stuff, not the fault of the game plan per se - like Grimes facing his own goal and playing a blind pass to his full-back and getting intercepted, or Benda giving a pen away at Blackburn last year, etc.

Not the fault of the game plan, how can you say that? We see the same pattern of play repeated every game and it regularly costs us goals. A player drops deep to give a wall pass and we get closed down quickly, it leaves nobody to pass to, no room as our defence and the midfielder are in each others way (to simplify it but Kerouac has described it more accurately) and we end up making dangerous, rushed passes that the oppo pounce on and score.

It's every game that we are giving these simple chances away so if t's not the game plan why is Martin not screaming at them to stop doing it?
The stupid stuff, as you call it, is every game and it is the game plan.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Excellent analysis you say but t wasn't Wood who played the ball to Benda, it was Abdullai wasn't it?

Your second paragraph proves our point, they have had a full season and now a full pre-season and yet cannot do what Martn wants. Is it because they are poor players or because Martins plan doesn't work?

If the players really are not up to it then why can Martin not see that and change the plan? Why does Martin keep on insisting that the plan will work and he won't make changes?

It needs fixing one way or the other but Martin is determined to keep going on the same road, we are careering toward a cliff edge and our driver is laughing maniacally and whipping the horses to go faster.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I actually knew it was Abdullai (honestly) but wanted to focus on the wider question of Fulton/Grimes. TBH, I'm not particularly bothered about us losing to Oxford in a cup that just becomes a nuisance.

I guess Martin is sticking to his philosophy because that's one of the reasons he was brought in in the first place. Otherwise, we go from manager to manager playing like everyone else and normally failing anyway. Despite relative success with Cooper, people weren't happy with the style of play.

It's obvious we need to improve. The main problems I see are: Grimes (too slow of thought, too one-footed, terrible set piece taker), Fulton (ultimately not quite good enough but could do a job in the right situation and the right position), Ntcham (blows cold and not so cold), Paterson (inconsistent), Lati (not good enough), Sarinola (not good enough) - and everyone (not enough movement). Apart from that we're OK.

Ok, martin was brought in for that philosophy but its not working, he cannot make it work. I'm sure you know the definition of insanity?

All those problems you list and yet Martin keeps picking that system with those players. He chose Sarinola, he keeps playing Lati at WB.

it's not the loss to Oxford that bothers me, it was the way it happened. martin made 4 changes that turned the game against us yet he blamed the players. Hes teflon, he cannot be touched.

PS, most of us were happy with Cooper until the january of his second season when he made a sea change in tactics and went very negative. I have come to believe that because the owners did not support him and even gave him players he didn't want that he decided he needed to get out. Right now I'd give my season ticket up to get him back because Cooper works with what he's got to get the best results. martin does the opposite, he chooses a system and a style we cannot play and then blames everyone else when it goes wrong.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Sorry Cat, was me that made that mistake.

I watched the highlights quickly and thought it was Wood so will gladly put my hands up if I was wrong with that one.

I genuinely don't think it's as bad as you put it nor as others are, it's being made an agenda for some without doubt.
I think many are using it to throw stones at those who wanted Cooper gone, I think the whole where we should be is being over hyped knowing that it will likely not happen....creating ammo to throw about to justify them being correct.

Personally o think Martin is struggling but he won't be the first or the last, he is young and it's certainly not as bad as many are making out....far from it.

Excuse me if posters think I am being to relaxed but we finished exactly where I expected us to finish last season and I certainly am not going to panic 2 games into the season, you won't find me panicking 10 games in if we are around 15th, I know how quickly this league can change.

Now if we are bottom 3 after 10 games THEN I will likely start getting concerned.

Hey, no apology needed, I make plenty of mistakes.

I was one of those who wanted Cooper gone too, it comes very much under " be careful what you wish for" AND "out of the frying pan, into the fire"

I want Martins style to work but we don't have the players nor the money to buy them. What I want above all else is a manager who is willing to work with what he has got, to try and get the best out of what we have and to not moan about the things that won't change. We have players he doesn't want but he knew that coming here. We have players he does want but he plays them out of position then blames the players.

He needs to make the best of the squad he's got. No more square pegs in round holes, no more suicidal passing, no more possession for the sake of it and even then we need to be quicker in every department.

Martin doesn't seem to understand that everything we see on the pitch comes from him. If players arent doing what he says then drop them. But he can't because we don't have the replacements, he needs to wake up to that.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

BACK on topic - Martin more time ?

Breaking News:

The leadership group is now ready to invoke Martin's release. Martin's recent capitulation has struck the same chord as last Autumn's chord of shock n awe amongst the ownership group.

The Papers written up then have now been refreshed. Allegedly, by all accounts that matter.

Another poor performance against a poor Blackpool who lost to League 2 Barrow midweek will be the penultimate nail in Martin's long and drawn out inevitable exit stage lefty.

Let's all hope for the best, and ofc always plan for the worst...........

Planning for a decent, proper Swans-type manager, a manager who gets what we're about, our ethos of progressive, positive, WINNING possession based football - exciting times again....

Martin Out:  is the mantra in the local corridors of power.......

Look at it again there was no pass. He was not intercepted he was caught in possession dawdling. Due to an dozy lack of awareness of time and space. Fulton jut offered up the ball and the striker took it saying thank you very much.

Rubbish it was nonsense possession for possessions sake football that went back to our last line of defence again where it broke down (again). He was absolutely about to pass it across the face of our defensive line. Hence why the Blackburn attacker angled his run of pressure to slightly close that angle.

You got it wrong.

Wow 😮

That is positive at least that they aren’t happy with this utter dross. As you say, similar happened before the run last year where he went more direct (presumably to save his job) before reverting to type.

Was he F!
Fulton was clearly making a movement towards his left, clearly indicating from his body angle he wanted to play the ball to Darling, Grimes gives him a pa's to his right side making him shift back to his right and then having the bad touch....the toe poke was a clear attempt to try and get the ball across to Naughton to make up for his poor touch.

As soon as the pass from Grimes was made, Blackburn striker was onto Fulton.....watch again ALL, before Fulton gets the pass, Fulton is shifting to the left to make the simple pass to Darling.

Sorry P but you have clearly got it wrong.

If Fulton has the awareness to see the direction of Fultons movement then he clearly plays it in that direction. Fulton should be doing a lot better than he did and should make a better touch and be far more stronger.

Its the old saying, don't let the ball come to you, in this case, Fulton is up against it because his shape and movement is moving to his left to receive the ball there to then shift onto Darling in space.

The ball from Grimes sets the problem up.

Adjusts his angles
Takes a touch
Blackburn player is on him
Tries to toe poke the ball across.

Has to try and get his toe to it because Grimes puts it on his wrong side and his touch then puts him in trouble.
If Grimes okays the correct ball and the one that Fulton opens his body up to then he plays the ball to the left and forward to Darling who is in the space.

In fact, Grimes should have just played it out first and foremost to Darling.

Its an absolute disgrace from Grimes looking at that again, If Fulton is square on then the ball is simple to play from Fulton off his right foot.

Body shape is so important and I am sure that this little clip was played time and time again on the players analysis Monday morning.
Clearly looking at the start of play, Fulton wants that ball played out to Darling....the ball from Grimes creates the issue forcing Fulton to try and get out of trouble by poking it across to Fulton, his body angle only allows that option to him.

Sorry P but the still you show is Fulton just after cushioning the pass from Grimes, likely the best still you could get to try and prove what you are wrongly stating. He has to step back off his left foot and take it on his right foot so that ball was only going one way after that.....to his right. He takes 3/4 steps back to his right after that pass!

I think Allen will take that Grimes position and Grimes sits in where Fulton is going forward from here.
Fulton is technically good enough to play either position unfortunately.

Indeed, and intentionally so of course.

He said judge after 6 months last season… I made the point that the judgement will never come, it will always be a case of “more time” and if things start looking hopeless then the bar gets set intentionally low.

I went through meticulously each clubs squad value, spending power, salary budgets, market price and it all pointed to top 8.

Yet certain individuals with a vested interest in not looking silly are trying to make us think another rubbish finish will be fine.

This is the frame md10 is referring to. At the point Grimes plays the ball, Fulton is facing Darling.

Pass appreciation is one of Grimes's weaknesses - maybe exacerbated by his one-footedness. A simple return pass a yard in front of Fulton i.e. the way Fulton's facing in this screenshot, rather than forcing Fulton to turn 180deg and we don't concede. So it's basically 2 mistakes in 1 - a poor pass from Grimes and poor control by Fulton.

Clear still that, thanks.

That is the source of the issue and Fultons body shape is clear.......no question that Martin wouldn't have been happy here. Fulton should have been square on mind in this position, solid to the floor with options to him both right and left, poor technique but someone of Grimes experience should be reading the situation better.

As for having perfection to play this system... Rubbish. The champ is quite unforgiving but so if the technique and attitude is right then can be there for the taking.

As I said, Oxford first go can't be defended but these stills clearly show the issue and as a coach it would be very frustrating. The players need to take a bit more brunt here...both Grimes and Fulton.

From the frame above, turning back on yourself to the right to receive the pass will require a decent technique, strength and speed of thought.... Comparing Fulton with Downes here is the perfect example, chalk and cheese.

Thanks again poppy, perfect still from the source that it went wrong.... No lies in that still, anyone who has played the game will clearly not want to be in Fultons position knowing where the ball from Grimes ends up.

Grimes could play that across to Darling and over to Naughton but no he okays it to Fulton, clearly the Blackburn forward is on the front foot and where he plays it.... the Blackburn strikers eyes surely lights up.

You are both missing the point.

Whether he passed to Fulton with the intention he went to Naughton or Darling means nothing. Either one is a pass under pressure along the final defensive line.

There is an awful lot of words and discussion over things that are completely irrelevant.

The goal came from us passing it around the back. Whether the initial plan was to go Fulton to Darling, or Fulton to Naughton makes zero difference to anything raised.

This is the set up we play, these are the errors that are made - this is what the opposition wait for.

Utterly bizarre discussion.

Fulton is also incredibly one-footed so you have to play everything to his right side.

No points missed here.

This is the way I want us to play but we need players who are comfortable doing it and they need to stop making schoolboy errors. If we can't improve the players we have then we need to get rid. Changing the style of play to suit the players we have, or to try and steal a result (like Cooper used to do) is the sort of short-termism that ultimately gets you nowhere.

Exactly this.

In that game a similar situation will have happened 20+ times, more(!) the amount we play it around the back.

The opposition, knowing we won't knock it long, and knowing that we don't have anyone running into the space between the lines, and knowing that we have no width (because the full-backs are in the attacking line) are sat in, blocking the easy passes and pressing up on our under pressure players at the back and in midfield...they are waiting for the mistake, the 1 in 20 when things don't quite go right...AND THIS MISTAKE IS INEVITABLE BECAUSE NOBODY IS PERFECT.

Jesus Christ, 'twp' is actually a word that is about as mild as it gets when faced with such illogical, idiocy.

...but hey, let's wait for either;
a) Martin manages to coach our players to be world beaters (we have seen from the video of him speaking to the players how ill-equipped he is to do that)
or
b) We are taken over by a Chinese billionaire who brings in the best players in the world, the players Martin obviously deserves (of course in that scenario Martin would be the first out of the door, as World Class players tend not to want to be coached by failed ex-MK Dons managers).
