| The Queen on 20:11 - Sep 8 by Sirjohnalot | The longest living Monarch in our history has died. It’s not the age, or even the person it’s the passing of the Crown. It would be deeply inappropriate for football to go ahead as normal. |
Only now seeing this, I don't think it would be deeply inappropriate for football to continue, life goes on. If it is deeply inappropriate why are Man Utd and West Ham playing tonight ?, those games could have been called off but I bet they didn't want to forfeit the matches, if league games get called off then those games will be played at a later date, I'm not English and I see the Queen as the Queen of England therefore it's poor Man U and West Ham played tonight, I wouldn't say that about Welsh teams or Scottish teams other than Rangers because lots of people view her and in some cases politically incorrectly call her the Queen of England. If I was English and recognised the Queen I would not expected Man U and West Ham to have played tonight but they did, so surely you must think it inappropriate them playing tonight ? if that is your stance. | The Queen on 20:53 - Sep 8 by Sirjohnalot | Don’t think you’re inciting anything at all, you’re being very respectful, asking a very sensible question. Like I said, I never met her, doesn’t affect me in anyway but it’s an historic occasion, which most people will not have witnesses in their lifetime. She was the most pictured woman in the world and one of the only members of the Royal Family who is (virtually) universally respected |
I will agree with your last point, despite being anti the monarchy I've never felt any ill will towards her. The comments being made by some (not on here thankfully) are quite heinous and very sad to see. The blackout of tv and postponing of sport doesn't bother me too much, but was just interested to hear why you thought. It certainly is a historical event that is for sure.

They will be keen to preserve the sense of national mourning but they may also be inclined to avoid pissing off a significant portion of the population by essentially banning things people enjoy and forcing everyone to be miserable for a few weeks. |
Problem is if you do that, you’ll pee off a load of people the other way

Haven’t read anything on here that could be described as insulting. Some people though just want to be left to get on with their lives, including going to watch sporting events. [Post edited 8 Sep 2022 21:35]

Why do you keep mentioning England, apart from your pathetic attempts at trolling. As you well know she was Queen of the United Kingdom

I think of more importance than a Wally like me is the armed forces and what she meant to them. I cannot imagine how the people who have lost colleagues who have laid down their lives for Queen and country are feeling. For them I have the ultimate respect

We've had a Royal family in this country for over 1,209 years and 37 generations, its been part of our history, both good and bad , most of our traditions have been based around them and the death of the Queen will be felt not only in this country across the world, when Biden Trudeau, Macron etc pass on will their deaths have such an impact as what we've going to see in the forthcoming days . I am a royalist and proud to say so , imo the thought of the UK becoming a republic with the likes of someone like Blair for example doesn't bare contemplating .

Sad day, so weird, seeing the flag above the palace at half mast for a split second then Huw Edwards made the announcement, it seemed inevitable it was coming with them all wearing black, but still took me by surprise. And then watching Liz Truss outside downing street, which I thought was a really nice speech, and at the end she said.. God Save the King. Just makes you think of your own mortality, I thought she would go on and on. Rest in Peace.

100%. It's not like this was unexpected, her health has been declining for a fair while. Most of us aren't supporters of the monarchy, take the day of her funeral, the coronation yes but I'd expect the vast majority of us won't watch these events, many will dip in for a look but the recordings and streaming services will be hit big on those days because it'll be wall to wall on live tv. I respeted the Queen, admired her even but the rest of them, Wills and Kate are ok but otherwise, abolish. Today was a major moment in history but many major moments happen and the world doesn't stop for 10 days. Life goes on.

My convictions you say, I pay my taxes and hope to have loads of paid time off (not convinced that will happen for all 3 events upcoming mind) and if I get lots of paid time off I will be enjoying the situation and celebrating probably by drinking large amounts of alcohol and cheering having the time off, my convictions are there was nothing unusual in having monarchies back in the day, but is the house of Windsor the correct house to be in charge ?, what about somebody from the house of Gwynedd or house of Dinefwr ?

The Queen was descended from both those houses. As probably you and I are. She’s also descended from the Tudors. Another welsh dynasty that fought alongside Glyndwr and went on to rule both England and Scotland.

Knees up mother Brown, knees up mother Brown, massive celebrations could be on the horizon, I hope they don't cancel sport this weekend (or next come to that), when is the funeral is it a week Monday ?

Agree with most of that. I wasn’t a fan of Charles but like a new PM, manager of the Swans and the like, I’m willing to give him a chance. I think he’ll be instrumental in dimming down the obsequiousness associated with the royals and I believe he’s going to slim it down also which is no bad thing. William “call me William” will undoubtedly take it down a step further. GSTK

I think now she has gone there will be a lot more people who don't care for the monarchy. Going to work today one of the local chip shops has indicated it is closed for the day as a mark of respect. It's what she would've wanted.

😂 Life has to go on. I hope that is what she would’ve wanted. Football needs to be played as do all other sports with the appropriate markers of respect. She certainly wouldn’t want any horse racing called off.

I would be disappointed if that is what she wanted (things closing down) but it does look that way as we have heard nothing to the contrary, if I was her I would have wanted things to stay open.

To be fair to Tony Blair, if it wasn't for his statesmanship when Diana died, the monarchy might look very different today. I am very sad that she has died, and very respectful of the years of service she gave this country. She clearly never expected to get the job, or wanted it, but she stuck with it and did her duty as she saw it. What I don't get is all these commentators, and ordinary people, saying that she saved this country, steered us through crises etc as though she was any kind of player in the political system. Monarchs are purely symbolic heads of state. They play no part in policy-making and I can think of no time when she interfered in politics. And rightly so. Much as I would have liked her to send Boris Johnson packing when he asked to be made Prime Minister, it would have been wrong.
