Burnley v Swansea City : Matchday Thread 2022/23 00:28 - Oct 9 with 19948 viewsNotLoyal

The battle for solidity in the top six is next.

Russell Martin talks about the pain, the hurt, and the rewards : Burnley pre match 13th Oct 2022 16:59
Swansea City go in to Saturdays game at Burnley with Joe Allen unavailable and really now it seems his focus is on the World Cup with Wales. Jamie Paterson still has ten days to go before he can be considered for selection. 0

Swansea City in fine form for todays game against Burnley 15th Oct 2022 08:25
Swansea City go in todays game against Burnley on a fine run of form, especially when it comes to winning games away from home of late. The test at turf moor today will be one of the hardest of the season but a win today for the swans would consolidate their position in the top six, a loss could see them fall dramatically if results go against them. 0

The Ref - Stephen Martin will be the man in charge when Swansea City travel to Burnley on Saturday (3pm kick-off). Staffordshire-born Martin has officiating in his blood with his father and grandfather blowing the whistle in the Football League. He first took up refereeing in 2002 and had made it to step five of the football pyramid within six years. He joined the National List of Referees ahead of the 2012-13 season and took charge of his first Championship match in January of that campaign. In 2015, he was included in the list of Select Group 2 officials. This will be the thirteenth time he has taken charge of a Swans games. Ten of the previous contests were league matches and the most recent of these was the Swans first home match of the campaign against Blackburn Rovers. On that occasion, Martin handed out four bookings with yellows shown to Jay Fulton, Michael Obafemi and Joel Piroe as well as Rovers’ Sam Gallagher. So far this season, he has taken charge of eight games handing out 27 yellow cards but no reds. On Saturday, he will be assisted by Mark Dwyer and Matthew Smith. Dean Whitestone will be the fourth official.

Burnley: Arijanet Muric, Jack Cork (captain), Ian Maatsen, Nathan Tella, Vitinho, Josh Brownhill, Anass Zaroury, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Josh Cullen, Jordan Beyer, Jay Rodriguez.

Subs: Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Charlie Taylor, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Ashley Barnes, Manuel Benson, Samuel Bastien, CJ Egan-Riley.

Swansea City: Steven Benda; Nathan Wood, Ben Cabango, Kyle Naughton; Joel Latibeaudiere, Jay Fulton, Matt Grimes (captain), Matty Sorinola; Olivier Ntcham, Joel Piroe; Michael Obafemi.

Subs: Andy Fisher, Harry Darling, Luke Cundle, Liam Cullen, Armstrong Oko-Flex, Fin Stevens, Ollie Cooper.

Swansea City resort to type and lose their way in Lancashire 15th Oct 2022 20:09
We have seen some poor performances this season from Swansea City, and todays annihilation at Burnley was right up there. The swans didn’t turn up, they didn’t care and they couldn’t process a team who had far more than they did in energy and desire. It was a real ‘thumping back down to earth bump’ that once again will test the credentials of Russell Martin over the coming days. 0

Ah right, Curtis defending him.

Our squad is miles away from Burnleys squad unfortunately.......it wasn't a great performance today and deserves some criticism for sure but the reality for me is that we I wasn't expecting much from today.

I understand its frustrating, criticism is just but an understanding of the reality coupled with everything else can't be ignored.

Unfortunately on here it's become a battle of supremecy over being right and wrong........posters can get it right and get it wrong but no one poster is 100% correct all the time, show me someone who thinks they are and I will show you someone who is in denial and unwilling to accept reality.

Good reply
My point is this.
Martin loves the fist pumping credit but shrinks when challenged about his deficiencies

The biggest mistake he has made is sticking with Grimes and Naughton and loaning out Whittaker and Joseph. This is about to hit home .

Cullen, as a striker…indefensible to any sane fan

You think that was deliberate then? I'm not so sure myself, no way should Cork have been wagging his finger right in Piroe's face though that much I do know and don't tell me the Ref wasn't influenced by the Burnley players right in his face intimidating him, because that's what they did,

There's mixed views on the net about it, ref booked 4 very early, piroe wasn't looking at the player, though his foot came down hard, but I think if he didn't do so he may have fallen.
Ref was also slow in bringing out the red. Yep influenced, maybe thought differently afterwards and why he spared JL.

He should have done us a favour and given second card to Joel L. Any half decent winger will have a field day against him. He's decent back up for three centre backs, but not out wide. Piroe incident is 50/50, slow it down and it don't look to bad.

Even when you know, you never know?

I've seen it again a few times now, I'm not sure he's actually caught the player, but the actual actions of the stamp backwards has cooked his goose for me, intent is enough for the ref to pull out the red card.

I’d rathervMarton be banned from the club entirely.

Too many bad decisions.

It is also worrying, for me,to have brought JA back as I think he is nowhere near what he was and he will be injured for much time with us

That said,player manager would do.

Great post. Playing the three at the back exposes them to pace. Kompany brilliantly exposed Ben and Naughton. Dropping Cooper and Cundle gives us a slower press. This is because Piroe for the last few games has been so slow and of the pace its unbeivable.

I dont get the unfair criticism of players or managers to make a narrative correct, eg they booed Leicester off today, who do they want as replacements?

If you are going to criticise him for bad performances then he needs praising for good ones and the fist pumps accepted.....its football.

Naughton needs putting on the back burner and Darling who is the younger player with the longer contract persevered with for sure.

Thing is we are an average team with an at best average manager in a division made up of mostly average teams led by average managers, no team really stands out does it, the next two games on paper are really winnable and if we win them could be in or near the top two, i have accepted long ago that Martin or this squad are no great shakes but neither is the rest of the league so i will now just enjoy the ride and see where it takes us.

We had a corner today that saw the ball passed deliberately, swiftly and considered passed backwards right to our keeper, this when behind.
Grimes the Great actually has joined Naughton in the ranks of walking footballers at our club.
It is appalling and if people defend that, then I feel for tyem.
Too right,I ll criticise,we all should unless you’re happy with that shyte . This is our club .

We’ve had plenty of days like this in the past and we’ll have plenty more. It will happen again this season.

The next result is always important.

For content, we’re four points off the top despite playing a crazy style half the season.

Walking football is a feature that grinds me especially when we are chasing the game, we are 3/4 nil down and you sware we were the ones winning. I do remember Russell saying our style will tire the opposition, we probably play with the slowest style of play in the league.

The frustration with Grimes has captain is the lack of verbal motivation from him. Fans want to see the captain screaming at players especially when your losing heavily. The casual walk to take one corner 3 nil down just sums him up for me. I felt like turning the game off at that point, if he can't be arsed why should I.

Got you, im a realist played and watched enough to make a balanced arguement. I beleive RM is learning on the job playing football the correct way with players who sometimes are not good enough. So everyone will have to adapt to our budget. RM got it wrong today, but i still think he should be given time.

Today our star Striker was abysmal his pace and first touch has gone. Sorinola was found wanting with Ben also having a wobble. There seems to be undeserved criticism for Grimes the same as Jack Cork had when he was here. Whatever you sell these type of players for you will never replace them for the same money in my opinion.

in fairness for the last 4 games Martin has deserved and received praise including from me...but today he git his team selection wrong and also his substitutions.
He is starting to creep back to playing round pegs in square holes players who fit but cant fill the slot
I still dont understand why Ogebeta is frozen out
as our left flank was so weak today....where is Manning?
That said Burnley were a PL side last season have quality so no knee jerks but tactics selection must be questioned

The slow passing comes from recycling the ball if no forward pass or there is lack of movement ahead to play the pass.

The modern footballer especially and mainly deep lying players are told to recycle the ball if there is no pass forward available.....its encouraged to play it back, to a fellow defender or even the goalkeeper.

This is absolutely fair. No histrionics, just reasonable, appropriate questions.

Martin has completely deserved praise over the last month or so. This was always going to happen at some point, but it’s still completely valid to question team selection and how off the boil we were.

Manning not even being on the bench is a worry, he’s easily been one of our best players recently.

Yes, i understand your point. But from a fan watching on TV, you just want to see an increase in tempo and urgency and directness. When your 3/4 nil down recycling the ball around Grimes and the defense hasnt worked in the first place.
