Although it won’t happen in the immediate there is only so far a commitment to a style of play can go. The pressure is on Martin now more than it has ever been before since his appointment. Slaven Bilić ‘Swansea City are clever, they trick you’ 30th Dec 2022 10:00Watford have an ever increasing injury and suspension list as they take on Swansea City in tonight’s Championship fixture at the swansea.com stadium. ( Kick Off 7.45pm ) On Boxing Day the hornets lost at home to Millwall causing a team meeting and some frank discussions as you can imagine with Slaven Bilić at the helm. Now he wants a complete change in his sides mindset for tonight’s game. 0 Russell Martin answers his critics with an emphatic win for Swansea 31st Dec 2022 08:00Swans boss Russell Martin responded in the only way he could to his growing critics at the swansea.com last night. I cannot believe how weak they were with the ball but tried to kick us off it especially in the first half.

Coops will wake up with a few bruises in the morning, yet I didn't see one Watford player receive a card, although I did lose my stream a couple of times.

Great win tonight, however I fear Burnley will be a very different challenge on Monday, up the Swans 👠

They got 2 max, one for a foul near their box and the other for gobbling off, we got 4, they definitely deserved more.

Exactly this. Except I didn't hear the commentator. The three small guys Oli Cullen and Cundle were in their faces of their defence all night. Hats off guys.

| Swansea City v Watford : Match day thread UPDATED ! on 21:56 - Dec 30 by Fireboy2 | It's absolutely amazing what a change in formation makes. Lati and manning are proper full backs and not wingbacks, 4 at the back meant that watford never got on the outside of us and having cooper and cullen supporting piroe gave us more attacking options for the midfield, plus they never let their defence settle. We just HAVE to play the same formation against Burnley to give us a chance to do em and I think we could. [Post edited 30 Dec 2022 21:59]

Mostly this. Watford did play into our hands a bit with their subs. Gave us acres of space in their half which we didn't have before, but today was an abject lesson in how much better we can be when we put square pegs in square holes. Martin clearly realises this, which makes his steadfast refusal to do so for the most part even more damning. [Post edited 30 Dec 2022 22:47]

I think maybe he did but the real answer is that he went 4-3-3 and we moved the ball more quickly. We had Cullen and Cooper working their socks off making runs which freed up space in the midfield that we pushed forward into. Two players I often ciriticse, Grimes and Cullen, they were both great tonight and Cullen deserved his goal AND took it very well. Piroe had support up front aand, not having to carry all the work himself had more time and space and was much more effective. In a complete turnaround, instead of struggling to say who played well I am struggling to say anyone played badly. They were all good, even Latibeaudiere. The answer for him though is he was in a flat back 4 and ironically he got forward and scored when as wing back he looked toothless. This is what we CAN do. We haven't the strongest suad but we have got a suad that can do better than we had been and we have showed it again. The big uestion now is, does Martin persevere with this formation and we sign a few players that suit this formation, or will he revert? I hope he's staying with it because tonight was how I think we ALL want to see us play. quicker football, a real goal threat...entertainment and 3 points, this is what we want. I know we won't win every week but we should be trying!

This result takes the pressure off him for now. If he can't see what we did tonight is more likely to get us results than his outdated philosophy he will never get my vote. If at last he sticks with what the players seemed comfortable with tonight great .

Will we get the usual changes because we are playing games close together. Did Watford press properly or did we negate it?? Did Grimes have a rocket up his backside, his best performance for the Swans by a country mile. Ollie Cooper and Cundle didn't give their players any time pressing like a proper team why because they are picked together. Add Cullens work rate to the press altogether a good team performance. And lastly playing with a back four who would have thought. A winning team yes, don't think it will be good enough against Burnley but the standard in the rest of the Championship is not brilliant.

Apart from what is posted on message boards I don't think he is under any pressure. The crowd were right behind the team from the start tonight. We'll done the North East corner in particular. The camaraderie between the manager and players after the game showed me they are as one also.

Really? 8 games previous and without a win you don't feel any pressure. Interesting.

It was an interesting style tonight.....quite bold to be fair, he encouraged Lati and Manning to get forward. The squad is not strong and I certainly won't be getting carried away with tonight's result but it was certainly a group of men including the staff that all wanted to get something from tonight's game and that showed a lot if harmony in that group for me. Movement made a massive difference...Oli Cooper and Cundle didn't stop moving and Cullen for his faults puts in a lot of work and just has that instinct of sniffing out opportunities. The consistency in the players is key for me, Martin needs to certainly keep with a back 4 and that allows that extra player further forward to help move the ball quicker with an extra player pulling a defender around. Big thing for me tonight was the players clearly showed after the 4th goal that it meant alot to them and they are all in it together.......no coincidence that players like Pato and Obafemi were not involved tonight.

Tend to agree, 433 works well in this league. We have some good players, if we play quickly and fight we've got a good chance in most games.

That's how I saw it, total togetherness in the squad and management tonight. The sooner the bad apples are removed the better. The next month will be very interesting.
