| Birmingham City v Swansea City : Match day thread UPDATED** on 18:09 - Jan 13 by union_jack | I see your point in that the nervy playing around the back was there for all to see and fill their pants with. In fact, it was more nervy than Martin’s days and I’d like to see us more pragmatic when we deploy this style if play. But, I think there was more purpose in our attack and the inclusion of Parker has strengthened the side. I hope he is ok. Tymon also on the left got some yardage in and put some good balls in, one that resulted in Lowe’s goal. It was disappointing to lose in that manner even though the result was fair ultimately. Cullen is impressing me more every game and Tymon showed his ability today. Like you, and as you know, I’d like Grimes to be more vocal. |
I should also mention that as long as we are always that safe distance from relegation, we can afford to try new things. We are not going up this year, nobody in their right mind would say so. Even if we got to the POs, there are only 3 teams in the hunt (4 maybe with Ipswich but even they are an outside bet).

| Birmingham City v Swansea City : Match day thread UPDATED** on 10:04 - Jan 14 with 1268 views | RichardO | The first half preformance was to be expected as we knew Williams want to play out from the back and Mowbray was always going to play a high press, we rode our luck as we have often lately trying to play the perfect ball or try that extra clever touch to beat a player and getting caught in possession. For the most part all those things should be done when it is relatively safe to do and safe guards are in place but in our attempt to control the ball we invited Brum to do as a home team is expected to do and thst is get high up the park. To win games the aim should be to create chaos in their defensive third not ours.. Thought the Cullen and Tymon partnership worked well and Paterson linked up well with Parker, downer is Parker won't be playing for a good couple of weeks and we need soneone to sustain the pressure that Parker provided that would have been Key now we need to use someone else as once Parker and Lowe went off we were unable to relieve the pressure. The goals conceded are really shocking from a point view we knew they would come back at us but for their first we did not protect Darling as we had at times in the first half after it became obvious Dembele was one of their main threats, the second we didn't get compacted enough as we tried to close the middle of the park, Wood got the wrong side of his man so was unable able to block the shot and Tymon did not close the gap that Patino left attempting to close the ball down, worried about his wide man maybe but he needed to make the decision to close James down once Patino had moved forward, maybe Patino shouldn't have pressed up bad decision making. We did get the ball forward quicker hence the number of corners given away by Brum hence the goal but the Captain really needs to make sure after getting a goal that the team is ready for the response we weren't. For all the complaints about Grimes and Fulton they played well. As for bringing Naughton on to steady the ship that is a no no for me, a stop gap we shouldn't be in position to have to use. | | | |

Good appraisal Richard In short, another win chucked away by not doing the basics. Having and developing a “ style”is pointless unless you do the basics. We do not and haven’t for several seasons . Mowbray is no mug and his players dug in for him. Wished we had the sense to have tried to empty him. Two excellent goals which should have won us the game wiped out by trying to be smart@rses . Why bring on a “ defender” who has no pace whatsoever ,can’t really tackle with effect,is hopeless in the air and doesn’t really inspire as some think . [Post edited 14 Jan 2024 10:11]

We looked exactly like a team playing their first game under a new manager. Plenty of frailties at the back. You’re right, they could have been out of sight before we scored. On the positive side, comparing it to last season, we committed more men forward and rather than get to the halfway line, run out of ideas and go back, we were regularly getting to their final third before that happened. Still not ideal, that’s obviously the hardest area of the pitch to play through, but progress nonetheless. Nice to see us mixing it as well. Possession football with the odd long ball over the top to Tymon.

We can score goals without question. However no other team has lost or drawn from winning positions. That is what Williams needs to address Yesterday ,we were pegged back almost immediately . Then after a lovely goal of real class ,basic error costs us ,right at the death Before anything else ,he needs to sort this out

We haven't got the players to be able to pass the ball around our area or even our own half, the oppositions quicker players are always likely to nip in between us and force mistakes. Speed of thought and deed we haven't got, even the likes of Citeh and Liverpool etc get caught out trying to play that game, see the Liverpool v Fulham games as one example, Fulham's pacey players give that Liverpool defence a torrid time and they deserved more from that game IMO. For the second, Patino is at fault. With seconds to go two players are already closing down the player on the ball. He isn't going anywhere and the click is running down with the ball fairly central. Patino then leaves his man and goes to make a 3rd person surrounding the ball player. A simple pass into the space that he vacated gives Jordan plenty of time to pick his spot. If Patino had stayed with his main then there was no danger [Post edited 14 Jan 2024 11:57]

Worthwhile looking at the match day thread with all the posters calling for Patino to replace Fulton. As previously pointed out people on this forum are not aware of all the important stuff that happens off the ball. Patina is nice enough on the ball otherwise he's strolling through matches.

Agreed, his positioning isnt great when defending as proven yesterday for their second goal. I have to agree Fulton is a dogged defender, I’m certain he would have sorted James out before the strike. Williams stated post match we tried to defend too much when ahead, obviously his theory was bring on subs and get a third to kill the game, which he also stated. But we don’t have that mindset atm.

That was under Michael Duff. Even then, we’ve scored 37 and conceded 41. Not prolific or overly leaky. There or thereabouts what you would expect for a lower mid table team. Looks like we’re going to score and concede more in this system.

I did mention that about Patino but once that decision was made others needed to react, one was block off because he was on the wrong side of the attacking player that was Wood and Tymon didn't close down James after Patino's inexperienced mistake, a number of players getting things wrong we may have got away with the one and I agreed about Patino but teamwork is about anticipating and covering players mistakes or weaknesses as in the first goal players switching off or not being aware of what is expected of them. Early days for LW to get his players comfortable in the job they need to do. Would have settled for a draw at the start away from home just disappointed when we should of had all three.
