| Proportion of Welsh speakers falls on 18:10 - Dec 6 with 2546 views | Gwyn737 | I’m quite surprised as that’s not what I thought was happening at all. I really wish I’d worked harder at learning it in school. I’d love to be able to speak Welsh. | | | |
| Proportion of Welsh speakers falls on 18:38 - Dec 6 with 2534 views | majorraglan | I live in Carmarthenshire and the Welsh schools in this area are oversubscribed, but that’s just here. Against this backdrop is a massive increase in the number of people (generally older) moving in to the area from the other side of Offa’s Dyke. One thing I disagree with, some Welsh language secondary schools are teaching Maths and the sciences through the medium of Welsh. [Post edited 6 Dec 2022 18:48]

Wish I had learnt a language but not Welsh, great if you want to stay in Wales & work for the council or government otherwise it’s useless. Surely there can be some database for Welsh government/ councils etc that you state if you want correspondence in English or Welsh, Bridgend council continue to send out letters separately in both Welsh & English at additional cost & very bad for the environment.

Carmarthenshire has had the biggest drop. Its all well and good children going to Welsh schools but it is a complete waste of time if its not going to be spoken at home, its not sustainable. There was an intellectual discussing this very point on the Welsh 6.30 news, he said the theory was correct but in practice it is not working. All the agencies are backing the Senedd in their approach to the Welsh language, they will because they are funded by the Senedd. There needs to be a major rethink and he said the 2050 target of one million will not be reached, it will probably be 800,000. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Thats still a big number to buikd from to get to the 1 million target. Many more outside of Cymru of course and not counted. Like Huw Edwards ! The schools are in place now to react to increased parental demand.

That figure is down from 562,000 ten years earlier so it going in the wrong direction. When you concider the massive financial outlay to get there, you can see why questions are being asked. Quite possibly there needs to be a change of tact, the academics are really shocked at the results.

It’s ok for sport though. Let’s exclude Carmarhenshire and Gwynedd then and it looks worse Kids leaning Welsh in school will dump it like they do other languages

I would've loved to have one to a Welsh school, unfortunately it wasn't possible logistically at the time. Learning languages after childhood is so much more difficult and time consuming.

I'd suggest that figure is already significantly inflated. 538,000 people who speak a bit of Welsh? I can buy that. 538,000 people fluent in Welsh? Not even close. I'd be amazed if the true figure was even a third of that amount.

There are many languages spoken in the UK, in the major cities there are dozens of languages spoken, in London there are areas where very little English is spoken, in fact there are thousands of residents there who are unable to speak English. Nobody seems too bothered about it though, but when it comes to Welsh, a language that has been spoken on these islands for centuries, people are in uproar that it is still around and some, I would suggest, would like to see it outlawed completely, there is very little chance of that happening thankfully.

Yes, that does make a lot of sense. I certainly hadn’t thought about the loss of small schools and the impact that has. Seems to have happened a lot in Swansea and surrounding areas compared to other areas I know.

Again, hysterical reply. Nothing like as you describe Why do you feel people attack something intangible like a language Areas of many English cities have Urdu,Farsi, Punjabi,Bengali as first language as the people came from the areas . They don’t hate English . Sadly, thecWelsh language divides ,still. It’s so obvious BTW, this forum is English

Why is the target how many can speak Welsh as opposed to those who do speak Welsh. Surely the aim should be to have the Welsh language spoken regularly. Ask the question how many regularly speak Welsh fluently.

What’s hysterical about it? Also, why are you bothered about it, you don’t even live in Wales, you hate the country and the Welsh language, the only thing divisive about it are people like you who want to see the language banned.

Nobody wants to see Welsh outlawed. Some would prefer it to be allowed to live or die on its own merits rather than artificially maintained at great expense and effort.

And no by hates it. It’s just many kids would be better served learning more universal languages . French should be spoken to some degree by every child here,as should a working knowledge of German |Spanish . Most Dutch and Scandinavian kids speak two fluently and are knowledgable of two more
