Not Lucky At All 22:08 - Dec 30 with 6934 viewsBrianMcCarthy

Definitely below par, but not lucky.

We dominated possession.
We sorted out their main threat.
We had more shots.
We had more shots on target.

Below par? Yes.
Lucky? No.

And we did all that while missing key players, recovering from COVID in the camp and only having five subs.

We're a serious team now. We'll win playing under par. It's not luck, though.

Pleased with the win obviously, but Dunne, Barbet and Dickie looked like the keystone cops at times tonight. Awful balls out of defence, constantly dallying and putting teammates in trouble, Dickie the worst offender.
Archer behind those three worries me a lot.

It's being so happy that keeps me going.

They've been really good all season, and our defence has tightened significantly over the last 2-3 months. Come on, cut them a bit of slack. Archer not as good as Dieng, but it's not like we're putting a child in goal.

Bare bones.

We were lucky that one of City's players decided he could easily trump Dozzell.

I thought a draw would have been a fair result, Dieng kept us in the game early doors which was vital and even playing against 10 Men for half an hour I couldn't see us scoring.
Anyway football is not fair, win some-lose some that sort of thing.
An excellent result for us all the same, two poor results previously have now been 'put to bed' and we responded well to those two poor results.

Nice to get that late winner that keeps us well in touch with play off positions. We still look a little rusty but that is understandable after the Covid break.

Barbet was our best player, way better than the other two central defenders.

I thought Dunne was awful. OG, should have given up a another penalty, and beaten off the ball numerous times

Just back, I must have been watching a different game, Dunne monstered a very good centre forward and was our best defender tonight by some distance.

Awful balls out of defence as other than Adomah they didnt have a single option until Dykes came on and finally embarrassed Austin into his solitary run in behind. No Chair so ball not sticking up top, Willock off form and Austin a complete passenger yet again.

Don't agree on Barbet - thought he was excellent (again) tonight...

Can we go out yet?

Good to hear from someone at the game, ParkRoyal.

I also thought that Dunne was good, though I was watching on the box.

The Bristol City goal was him and Dickie both diving to protect a shot. By the sound of it, it hit both of them on the way in. It went in, but it's not an OG. And it definitely wasn't Dunne's man who scored. So no blame there.

His yellow was him covering for a Dickie mistake.

I thought that Barbet wasn't in the game as much as usual because City attacked almost exclusively down Adomah's wing. That brought Dickie into the game more as he got drawn out to cover O'Hare getting behind Adomah, and Dunne then moved over to protect those attacks, so they were the two most active centre-backs of the three tonight.

And I thought that, of those two, Dunne was better than Dickie.

Dunne also seemed to do most of the marking - at east to my eye - on Semenyo, who was ineffectual.

Overall, I thought that Dunne did well.

I'll have to rewatch the the almost penalty, I didn't notice Dunne covering for Dickie. If so that makes a difference, although it was still easily could be a penalty. I rewatched the OG again and I still think Dunne was the only one who touched it.

Dunne really struggled in the first half to the point that the Bristol City commentators were urging their team to target him. But in Dunne’s defence he was much improved in the second half and dealt with the threat from the lively and physical Semenyo.

I’ve inadvertently discovered a bit of a niche online fringe interest by watching a few QPR wins this season on the other team’s feed with their commentators losing their sh1t over every decision, goal etc that goes our way.

Yes Dunne’s yellow was caused by Dickie faffing around as at Bournemouth away and their‘penalty’ was when he was covering Barbet who was caught out by a simple ball over the top . Barbet’s defending inadequacies made up for by his good distribution. Dunne not blameless but he is our best defender on current form IMO. Too many 5/10 for me: Austin , Field , Willock, Dickie . But hey we won !

I honestly thought your heading was tongue in cheek Brian. We were very lucky indeed. 'Luck" is when events that you cannot control go in your favour. The three big events in the game; their 'penalty' our penalty and the sending off, all went in our favour - if they hadn't we would have (deservedly) lost the game. The best way to judge if we were lucky or not is to place yourself in the shoes of the opposition; if any of those 3 big decisions went against us we would be up in arms. We only have to go back 3 days to experience that at first hand. We may well have been 'due' some luck, but we got it in spades last night.

I think Brian's OP is more right than wrong. Good and bad luck goes both ways in every game and is pretty subjective. Statistics are more objective and those Brian shares show we were the better team in some respects. That said we were way off the standards we've set ourselves this season, particularly in the first half.

A quick word on Amos who I thought did a lot of good work. The tenacity he brings in and out of possession is excellent as we saw in the the penalty he won.

Seems to be a lot of negativity about last night's result.
Fair enough people are entitled to call it as they see it but it's another away win, we've stopped getting to the point where we need to score three to win a game now. It's down to two now. It's progress.
Even on Saturday we stayed in the game against a top class side.( cheating basterds but that's another story)
We haven't played particularly well this season but we're bang in contention for a play off place.
I doubt we will go up but I'll take play off place
as a sign of huge progress .
Delighted for our travelling fans last night. I've been to Ashton gate a few times, always ended in defeat.
Onwards and upwards.

I’ll tell ya who was “lucky”…..
Bristol City at our place earlier in the season.

As someone else points out here. Luck comes in good & bad places. It invariably evens itself out, unless a certain K Stroud is in charge.

And I never get the “only 5 subs” thing. Surely we have a couple of Youth/U21/18’s who could travel with the squad. You don’t Have to use them, but what an invaluable experience for them.
Funny how ‘Bare bones seems to happen so much in December, with a transfer window looming. 🤫😂
