The Bird’s Eye ones in my local corner shop seem to be called ‘Omega 3 breaded Alaska pollock’ now and, to my mind, don’t taste as good as the ones I remember. They’re far too ‘mushy’. Presumably traditional cod ones are still available as I have enjoyed fish finger sandwiches in the past.
I haven’t had boiled eggs and ‘soldiers’, a childhood staple, for many years. I can never seem to boil an egg to the right consistency. They’re either too soft and runny, with the yolk still raw, or completely over-cooked, thus negating the original purpose of the ‘soldiers’.
I am rather partial to an omelette though, particularly as you can ‘improvise’ with bits and pieces at the back of the fridge, which might otherwise end up in the compost bin. |

Seem to remember we had a mild flirtation with TUC crackers for a while. I imagined they must be the working class version of Ritz Crackers, which, with a name like that, must be ‘posh’.
I also remember being obsessed with the ‘Golf’ chocolate biscuit brand. The plain ones, with the green label, were my favourites followed by the blue (or purple) ones, which, if memory serves me correctly, had more of a raisin-y texture.
The orange ones were not so much to my taste, although, if push came to shove, I would sacrifice my principles and devour them, stripping off the chocolate first followed by the biscuit. | | | |
