I used to make up a bowl midweek, let it set in the fridge and then eat the whole thing whilst watching the Champions League on ITV. The days when football could be watched by everyone. And this time of year I love Jersey Royal Potato's but crazy price this year.
On a side note, I am with Ted. I love Liver, Bacon and Mash - BUT I hate the onion gravy mainly because my Mum used to force me to eat that and I hated it. Getting nice lambs liver nowadays is difficult

I had a sudden craving for the stuff recently but when I tried the various corner shops round here none of them had heard of it. I found one place that sold it a little further afield but they wanted nearly £6 for a tin, which seemed insane.
I’d almost given up when a Tesco Metro hove into view. I spent 20 minutes searching the aisles, but to no avail. It was only a chance remark to a cashier, as I was making my reluctant exit, that finally revealed the reason for its absence from the shelves: the stuff was being stored under lock and key in a secure cupboard behind the counter. Apparently it’s become a prime target for shoplifters. Welcome to 2026!
As for Fry’s Chocolate Cream, that was my Nanna’s favourite (along with the Lime Barrels, now sadly discontinued, in the Cadbury’s Milk Tray box). For many years I bought a bar on the anniversary of her death and ate it in her memory.
As an afterthought, other things I haven’t been able to get recently (possibly worthy of another thread) are Valderma soap (the blue, ‘antibacterial’ stuff) and TCP, a childhood staple, indispensable for cuts, grazes, sore throats etc.

Rowntrees Nutty Bar. It was like salted caramel fudge surrounded with peanuts. Absolutely delicious when I was growing up. I think they were withdrawn because there was something like asbestos or nuclear waste in them? Or maybe both? They were delicious though and I still cough and glow in the dark when I switch the lights off at night.

My son got some fish fingers the other week and made me a fish finger sandwich. The last time I had one of them must have been 40+ years ago.
The Bird’s Eye ones in my local corner shop seem to be called ‘Omega 3 breaded Alaska pollock’ now and, to my mind, don’t taste as good as the ones I remember. They’re far too ‘mushy’. Presumably traditional cod ones are still available as I have enjoyed fish finger sandwiches in the past.
I haven’t had boiled eggs and ‘soldiers’, a childhood staple, for many years. I can never seem to boil an egg to the right consistency. They’re either too soft and runny, with the yolk still raw, or completely over-cooked, thus negating the original purpose of the ‘soldiers’.
I am rather partial to an omelette though, particularly as you can ‘improvise’ with bits and pieces at the back of the fridge, which might otherwise end up in the compost bin.

Bring the water to the boil first , put the eggs in, 6 minutes exactly, perfect runny yolk and solid white.

In the event of ‘colic’ or such-like, my Mum would tip a tablespoon or two of Gripe Water down my throat. I loved it so much I would seek out the bottle in the medicine chest and take a couple of slugs whenever I got the opportunity, even when I was perfectly well.
Not being able to read at the time I had no idea what was in the stuff but I’ve since learned that one ingredient in the earlier incarnations was alcohol. Which probably explains a lot.
