| Dead 16yr old washed up on Calais beach... on 19:58 - Aug 20 by controversial_jack | The point is, we have people whinging that they are coming here in their droves to sponge of the state and live off benefits.None of this is the case. |
Don’t be daft, they are coming here to wash cars, not pay any taxes etc etc, get free health care and free or subsidised accommodation. They are economic migrants as they have paid to get into those boats. They should try legal routes to claim asylum

| Dead 16yr old washed up on Calais beach... on 20:13 - Aug 19 by Neath_Jack | We should part exchange the incoming refugees for the lazy white generational benefit claimers. Generation after generation of spongers who will never attempt to work in their lives. They are the real stain on this country. |
There are black and white benefit spongers, why do you only want to swap the white ones ?

| Dead 16yr old washed up on Calais beach... on 00:36 - Aug 20 by Kerouac | Please point me to your source. The principle of the Dublin Regulation: the first Member State where finger prints are stored or an asylum claim is lodged is responsible for a person's asylum claim. If these people are in France and are not claiming asylum, they are there illegally. France needs to send them home or grant them asylum. By making an illegal crossing of the channel they are de facto entering this country illegally and have left a relatively peaceful country, France, to do so. They have no more right to be granted citizenship here than I would if I rock up in Japan demanding citizenship. |
It's set out clearly in the fullfact article you yourself were quoting - https://fullfact.org/immigrati As controvertial_jack say, they have no right to be granted asylum. Only the right to apply. Many fail and are deported. While we hang on to our EU rights we can still send unsuccessful claimants back to France I believe (we certainly were able to before we left the EU, and did). That option will end on 31st December unless we come up with a new reciprocal arrangement with France. Again they have a right to travel through countries if they are seeking asylum, so it's not as simple as saying they are in any country illegally. And they're not de facto illegal here - they are legally allowed to travel here to claim asylum. Don't believe what the Brexiteer headbangers are telling you.

Convenient to forget the tens of thousands of British economic migrants who've moved around the world in the last 300 years, you hypocritical tw*ts. And that other gem: illegal immigrants in the car wash living cushy lives. My arse. How can they be illegal and claim benefits. They're under the radar. I'd love to force some on here to work in a car wash in January. But you'd be too lazy and useless to hack it. These people must have incredible gumption or desperation to make such dangerous journeys from Africa and the Middle East, and should be respected for that. And then to face the English Channel at the end of it. How many on here would have the bolloc*s to do that? Personally, I'd love to shove Kerouac, Andy1300 & a few others off the Kent coast at midnight in a bog standard dinghy and san fairy Ann to the fuc*kers.

I tend not to weigh into subjects such as this for obvious reasons, but now and again I need to. I make no comment on the rights and wrongs of UK immigration policy, but in my experience those who come here from abroad rarely go long before finding some sort of employment.

£37 pound a week is the benefit asylum seekers get. They have no right to work. What you say is entirely borne out by my own experiences. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Wow,you are fiery. Economic migrants are different from refugees and I'm not conventiently forgetting British migrants. Although I'm not sure about British economic migrants, I migrated to Canada, I had to complete endless paperwork, submitted to police checks, prove education and more to get enough points to be accepted. I understand the desire people have to get a better life for themselves and their families, but you can't have an open border, open the floodgates and more and more will come and eventually overwhelm the country they flood to. So the borders have to stay closed. The only answer to economic migrants I believe is for the richer countries to help the poorer countries to inprove the standard of life in the poorer countries s they don;t want to leave. I know, thats not likely to happen either. Refugees are a different problem and need international cooperation to help, but that's not forthcoming either. Its a hard problem that we on messageboards can't fix and difficult to get counter arguments out without upsetting people.

F*cking hell, read your own link is it... "Although it’s certainly true that crossing the Channel without authorisation isn’t a legal way to enter the UK, Article 31 of the UN Refugee Convention states that refugees cannot be penalised for entering the country illegally to claim asylum if they are “coming directly from a territory where their life or freedom was threatened” provided they “present themselves without delay to the authorities and show good cause for their illegal entry or presence”. A lot depends here on how to interpret which country people are “coming directly from”. It could be argued, for instance, that as the people crossing the channel are coming directly from France–which is not the country they initially fled–they don’t have the right to claim asylum in the UK." At the bottom of your link it explains how the 'Dublin Regulation' means that we can return illegal immigrants who have left the continent back to the country they left to come here illegally. "Don't believe what the Brexiteer headbangers are telling you." F*cking laughable. The Dublin Regulation is the policy of the EU.

If we have open borders, because economic migrants rights trump the rights of the existing citizens of a state, then we will be swamped...and everybody will be worse off. I don't know if you've noticed but you share this country with other people and we don't want to be swamped by anyone who fancies coming here. We don't wish to create chaos here and we don't wish to incentivize criminals and the world's poor to put their lives in danger trying to get here illegally...chasing a pipe dream. It is extremely irresponsible of those who do wish to incentivize people to cross the channel on dinghys. British economic migrants are not forcing themselves on states that do not wish to have them, they are not entering illegally and demanding citizenship. Personally, I've done hard physical labour in my twenties, it doesn't frighten me and as a result I'm not overly impressed with those who work in such jobs. I am from a long line of people who did hard physical labour...there was no privilege. People want to work and live in Britain, great, enter the country legally. Personally, I'd love to have a referendum on this issue, with 3/4 positions the government could take as regards illegal immigrants. We both know that the position you'd favour would lose, big time. Go and practice your version of morality with your own time and money, not ours and our children's.

1. I've never said I support the idea of an open border. I don't. 2. I was talking about British economic migration in the past (mainly in the 19th century), not today. 3. We are not being swamped. As others have mentioned, the vast majority of those fleeing conflict in the Middle East end up in desperately over crowded and poor countries next door. We receive a trickle, and when the right wing press claim otherwise it makes me puke. 4. This is one of the hardest countries in Europe to get into, mainly because of the Channel, but also because of our tough immigration policy. Kudos to those who try.

I mostly agree with that but I can't say kudos to those who try crossing the channel in totally unsuitable craft. They foolishly risk their lives and often childrens lives too. They do it because they are fed lies about the end of the rainbow being here when the reality is very different. We need to be sure the immigrants/refugees/economic migrants know the truth before they get onto substandard boats with rubbish engines to cross the worlds busiest shipping lanes, before more desperate people die. We also need to deal with the traffickers, they are a scourge. There should always be help and support for genuine refugees. This country has a moral obligation to help, especially when our actions overseas have caused there to be so many refugees.
