Middlesbrough somehow won the last encounter at their place 2-1. It was in December. A memorable game was an FA Cup replay on the 17th January 1995, Swansea won 2-1 at then Ayresome Park. Oddly enough Linkin Park played Newcastle that night, but it wasn’t a game of football. The first game was in 1925 Swansea won 4-0 in a division two game. In 1926 Boro beat Swansea 7-1 which tells you there’s been a few goals about in this fixture, a cursory glance reveals more than twice the average goals have been scored for this amount of games. When the swans were going for promotion to the premier league in 2011 they won 3-4 at Middlesbrough and Craig Beattie scored, he ran and ran and ran when he scored, and was never seen again. I know 700k is a lot for us to spend on a player but for an attacking player in this division it really is chicken feed, he really is one for the future.

Played out as planned. Clever rotation and deployment of finishers.
Warnock's giants were tougher than expected 2nd half. We dug deep and leveraged our biggest ever edge of toughing it out, controlled defending (even without Bennett), inner belief, confidence and superior talent. On and off the pitch.

Yes but we were under the cosh for large periods in the second half. It didn’t make for comfortable viewing - Boro’s corner kicks from McNair were as good as I’ve seen, almost always hitting the spot and gave us serious problems.
For the record I don’t think Boro would have equalized if we had subbed Hourihane instead of Smith - we needed Smith’s work rate to break up Boro’s attacks late in the second half and Fulton was left exposed for the equaliser as CH was nowhere to be seen. Could have cost us two vital points. We’re not always going to get last minute penalties to dig us out of the cachu.
I think Bennett has to play if fit because he adds a calmness which assures his young defensive partners at the back. No slight on Kyle Naughton (aka Kevin Roland) at all - he’s been magnificent this season. Bennett’s leadership helps Grimes out and I get the feeling Grimes plays much more confidently with Bennett backing him up.
For me our best side is Woodman , Roberts, Cabango, Bennett, Guehi, Bidwell then Grimes, Fulton, Smith then Lowe and Ayew.
If we have to Sub Lowe sub him with CH or Whittaker when the game is either safe or at a stalemate. So gutted about losing Morris though, so unfair on the lad.
Final observation- Morgan Gibbs White is our biggest miss of all - I dare say that had he remained we would be up there with Norwich fighting for the title. We could have left Watford and Brentford squabble over third place. Hope we can sign him nex TV season whatever division we end up in. |  |

700k is nothing. It was a value play as Derby were struggling financially and may come good in the future, a bit like Lowe with Wigan's financial issues. I can't imagine there would have been any cracking striker we could have got for that money.
Norwich have Pukki and Brentford have Toney. We wouldn't be able to afford anyone that can compare to those, especially in January.
Bony is worth a look at, but its the longest of longshots. When was the last time he had a game where he looked even a bit decent in the English leagues? He hasn't played for a long time.
The fact we are even discussing it shows the nature of the squad Cooper has at his disposal and what happens when a club has no money available to spend. The fact we are in the position we are in is incredible.
However back to Bony, I have a feeling it would also be tough to persuade his people to work with us so cheaply. I think he still has hopes of a move somewhere decent (China for example), an injury may scupper that chance. It' a big risk to take for a pay as you play deal, especially if you have a questionable injury record... which he does.

That's precisely why I'm saying why it should be worth a go because he's very different to what we have up front. Even as a late sub when we're losing , we get plenty of crosses into the box, even if he occupies up 1 defender to give space for someone else, it might be worth it. | |

Hourihane's contribution on the other hand was only dead ball kicks. His lack of pace up front was shocking.
Accommodation Grimes and Hourihane is weakening the team.
If you play CF defence or touch line with almost no service you are unlikely to score.
Defence yesterday was outstanding (all player ratings I've seen agree).
IMO, just as Cooper should make a decision on Grimes or Hourihane I think he should decide on Cabango or Bennett. Both are very good central centre backs with Naughton and Guerhi bringing different qualities and balancing the back three.
In olden days the defence was right back, centre half and left back which is what we had yesterday but with 'wing backs''.
Have to disagree with Brynmill on the comment about corners, they weren't hurting us at all. |  |

Bony needed to be match fit and be good to go in january. He could have been a viable oprion had he done the hard yards with mike Flynn at Newport alongside Brandon Cooper and lost a few kg and banged in 10 goals at league 2 level.
He chose not to prove himself possbily because he knew he was not up to the gruelling work requred. He effectively wanted a contract that gave him 2-3 month of getting into shape on good money. He should have done that at Newport county on bad money in front of scouts. |  |

Exactly! How fit is Bony, how quick is he these days and how sharp is he?
It's absolutely ridiculous to suggest Bony can just turn up for a chanpionship club and be worth a spot.
At the very least he'd have to train for a month to get up to speed on tactics and what Cooper wants.
If Whittaker isn't ready yet and he's been here training and working hard, when would Bony be ready?
